    Notes: Strained layer superlattices of wurtzite CdS/CdSe have been grown on (111)A GaAs substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition and their optical properties studied by photoluminescence spectroscopy. It is shown that the superlattice layers contain giant strain-induced piezoelectric fields exceeding 2×108 V m−1. These fields are similar to those reported for (111) orientated III–V superlattices, but an order of magnitude greater. The recombination energies from a series of samples provide evidence for a type II conduction band offset of 0.23±0.10 eV (the electron wells being in the CdS), with the band structure heavily modified by the internal electric fields. In addition, the photoluminescence peak emission energy shows a strong dependence on the excitation power. This is interpreted as further evidence for the effect of internal fields. We conclude that this system shows new effects not previously observed in II–VI compound superlattices. The large band-gap tunability and the space-charge effects offer possibilities for all-optical switching devices in the 700–1300-nm region of the spectrum.

    Notes: Abstract Paleovegetation maps were reconstructed based on a network of pollen records from Australia, New Zealand, and southern South America for 18 000, 12000, 9000, 6000, and 3000 BP and interpreted in terms of paleoclimatic patterns. These patterns permitted us to speculate on past atmospheric circulation in the South Pacific and the underlying forcing missing line mechanisms. During full glacial times, with vastly extended Australasian land area and circum-Antarctic ice-shelves, arid and cold conditions characterized all circum-South Pacific land areas, except for a narrow band in southern South America (43° to 45°S) that might have been even wetter and moister than today. This implies that ridging at subtropical and mid-latitudes must have been greatly increased and that the storm tracks were located farther south than today. At 12000 BP when precipitation had increased in southern Australia, New Zealand, and the mid-latitudes of South America, ridging was probably still as strong as before but had shifted into the eastern Pacific, leading to weaker westerlies in the western Pacific and more southerly located westerlies in the eastern Pacific. At 9000 BP when, except for northernmost Australia, precipitation reached near modern levels, the south Pacific ridges and the westerlies must have weakened. Because of the continuing land connection between New Guinea and Australia, and reduced seasonality, the monsoon pattern had still not developed. By 6000 BP, moisture levels in Australia and New Zealand reached their maximum, indicating that the monsoon pattern had become established. Ridging in the South Pacific was probably weaker than today, and the seasonal shift of the westerlies was stronger than before. By 3000 BP essentially modern conditions had been achieved, characterized by patterns of high seasonal variability.

    Notes: Summary Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV, an inherited connective tissue disease, is usually caused by mutations in the gene for type III collagen. Here, we describe a glycine to glutamic acid substitution in a patient with this syndrome. Previous studies had shown that fibroblasts from the patient, his mother and brother secreted a reduced amount of type III collagen and also produced an overmodified form of the protein that was preferentially retained intracellularly. Peptide mapping experiments indicated that the mutation was located within cyanogen bromide peptide 9. This was supported by chemical cleavage analysis and sequencing of cDNA encoding this region. Allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridisation of genomic DNA confirmed that a G to A mutation converted Gly 847 to Glu. The mutation was present in two other affected family members and also in a third, who was clinically unaffected. Further analysis of this unaffected individual revealed reduced mutant:normal ratios in DNA obtained from both blood and hair samples, showing that she was mosaic for the mutation.

    Notes: Summary We have investigated a family with an autosomal dominantly inherited connective-tissue defect causing extreme joint hypermobility, premature osteoporosis and late-onset fractures. Analysis of collagenous proteins from affected individuals showed a deletion in some α2(I) chains. Peptide mapping localized this to the CB peptide α2CB4, which covers the N-terminal one-third of the protein chain. Polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing of cDNA derived from this region of the mRNA identified á heterozygous deletion of the 54 by comprising exon 9. Similar analysis of the genomic DNA revealed an 11-bp deletion from bp3 to bp13 of IVS-9. This disrupts the consensus 5′ splice signal (GTAAGT) and leads to exon skipping. In a family study of 13 affected and unaffected family members using both heteroduplex formation and direct analysis for the deletion, all of the affected, but no unaffected individuals, were found to carry the deletion. This generated a positive Lod score of 2.6 with the Liped programme.

    Notes: Summary A large family with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV (EDS IV) has previously been described. Unlike most cases of EDS IV, fibroblasts from affected members secreted near normal amounts of type III collagen. We have localised the mutation in this family to the CB5 peptide of type III collagen, by using both protein and cDNA mapping techniques. Sequence analysis of cDNA revealed a 27-bp deletion within exon 37, a deletion that removed nine amino acids and maintained the Gly-X-Y repeat of the collagen helix. Further sequencing of genomic DNA confirmed its location, and amplification of DNA from family members showed that it was absent in unaffected individuals but present in all the affected individuals tested. This deletion is flanked by two short direct repeats of CTCC; it may have arisen by slipped mispairing, and has subsequently been transmitted to all affected family members.

    Notes: Abstract Results of experiments on controlled releases of fall-fingerling Atlantic salmon to lacustrine habitats in Newfoundland are reviewed in terms of survival during freshwater residence and smolt yield per unit of standing water habitat. Average survival from parr to smolt in three consecutive annual releases was 12.9% and we conclude that the quality of fall-fingerling salmon, produced from our semi-natural rearing techniques, was satisfactory. Year-class survival decreased progressively with consecutive releases. Rate of increase in juvenile salmon biomass remained stable over the duration of the study, suggesting that the average annual biomass of 1.6 kg ha−1 of juvenile salmon released did not exceed habitat carrying capacity. Precocity did not appear to represent a significant deterrent to fall-fingerling survival. Annual smolt yield (by year-class) from stocking ranged from 53 to 130 ha−1 (mean = 77 smolts ha−1).
