    Notes: Abstract In autumn 1981 there were widespread reports of a reduced level of antibiosis in lucerne crops and field trials where cultivars selected for resistance to the aphid, Therioaphis trifolii f. maculata, had been used. On our field trial, the plot of ‘CUF 101’ lucerne was infested to a level about 40% of that on the aphid-susceptible ‘Hunter River’, compared with an average of about 3% over the two years before and the two years after. An experimental study of possible causes using a bioassay technique on cloned plants representing the spectrum of resistance in CUF 101 indicated that loss of resistance was temporary and occurred apparently randomly among the tests, but that certain treatments increase the frequency of its occurrence. Lowered temperatures and the use of either young regrowth or senescent lucerne, each increased the frequency of loss of resistance. Inundation of lucerne by large numbers of aphids did not affect the expression of resistance directly, but the few progeny that survived to adulthood on partly-resistance lucerne were habituated and were then able to interact with the plants to increase the apparent frequency of breakdown of resistance. Plants which showed the loss of resistance developed aphid populations between 4x ad 25x those when they expressed their normal resistance level. Investigations suggest that the situation in autumn 1981 may have been the result of a prolonged and massive immigration of aphids into lucerne crops, which, on the aphid resistant cultivars allowed surviving aphids to exploit maximally the combined effects of factors causing some loss of resistance.

    Notes: Abstract Cross-infection experiments were performed to determine the influence of temperature on infection rate in the Chondrus crispus Stackhouse-Petersenia pollagaster (Petersen) Sparrow pathosystem. C. crispus thalli were collected at Pubnico Harbor, Nova Scotia, Canada in the fall of 1981 to 1984. Infective zoospores were used to inoculate healthy thalli at five different temperatures. The highest infection rate was obtained at 20°C, while significantly lower rates were obtained at temperature extremes. The parasite's life cycle, consisting of infection of healthy thalli, endobiotic development, and release of zoospores, was completed in 48 to 72 h at 15° to 20°C.

    Notes: Summary Adding to the classical Hellinger Reissner formulation another residual form of the equilibrium equation, a new Petrov-Galerkin finite element method is derived. It fits within the framework of a mixed finite element method and is proved to be stable for rather general combinations of stress and displacement interpolations, including equal-order discontinuous stress and continuous displacement interpolations which are unstable within the Galerkin approach. Error estimates are presented using the Babuška-Brezzi theory and numerical results confirm these estimates as well as the good accuracy and stability of the method.

    Notes: Abstract Defects in Complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain have been identified in 38 patients. The clinical and laboratory features are reviewed and the results of recently devised strategies aimed at characterizing the primary molecular and genetic abnormalities are presented. Although not exhaustive, these studies have provided a molecular basis for the contention that defects in Complex I may have their origin in nuclear or in mitochondrial genes.

    Notes: Abstract Scanning electron micrographs revealed growth increments in the primary shell layer of the extant terebratulid brachiopod Terebratalia transversa collected from Anacortes, Washington, USA, during the summers of 1982–1984. The increments extend into the secondary shell layer, but only as poorly-defined continuations. Growth increments narrow and widen cyclically, producing patterns similar to tidally-induced, fortnightly growth patterns in bivalve molluscs. “Asymmetric” increments or “doublets” that consist of paired wide and narrow bands present additional evidence that the growth pattern is produced by the interference of tidal (24 h 50 min) and solar (24 h) daily environmental influences on growth, as is the case in bivalves. Growth increments are relatively well-defined in specimens from tidal habitats and are poorly-defined in subtidal specimens. Specimens grown in laboratory aquaria and subjected to simulated tidal emersions and submersions had well-defined increments, whereas those that were continuously submerged in aquaria had poorly-defined increments, paralleling the distinctness in growth increments produced at various depths in the natural habitat. Production of growth increments in T. transversa may be related to valve movement and changes in mantle-cavity pH. When the valves are closed, pH drops and, when they are open, pH rises. Highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) of mantle tissue and fluid failed to detect any single organic acid that could have been responsible for the pH changes, confirming that intermediate metabolism in T. transversa is very low compared to that of bivalve molluscs. Calculations indicate that cycles in intermediate metabolism may nevertheless be responsible for cycles in growth-increment production and shell dissolution.

    Notes: Summary In order to test the hypothesis that mitochondrial myopathy may be caused by mutation of the mitochondrial (mt) genome, restriction fragment length polymorphism in leucocyte mt DNA has been studied in 38 patients with mitochondrial myopathy, 44 of their unaffected matrilineal relatives, and 35 normal control subjects. Previously unreported mt DNA polymorphisms were identified in both patients and controls. No differences in restriction fragment patterns were observed between affected and unaffected individuals in the same maternal line, and there was no evidence of major deletion of mt DNA in patients. This study provides no positive evidence of mitochondrial inheritance in mitochondrial myopathy, but this has not been excluded.
