Redox Reactions in Condensed Oxide Systems. VII. On an Amorphous Manganese (III, IV)-oxide Phase Formed by Thermal Decomposition of MnCO3Thermal decomposition of MnCO3 in air is stimulated by oxidation processes, which start partially already above room temperature at precipitated MnCO3 · xH2O (0.37 〈 x 〈 0.83) samples containing in parts chemically bound water. However, for water-free MnCO3 decomposition starts at 250-300°C. Independently of the water content an amorphous manganese(III, IV) oxide phase is formed during decomposition which shows the average composition MnO1.78 ± 0.04(CO2)0.11 ± 0.02. Up to 420°C this amorphous compound is stable and above this temperature αMn2O3 is formed during decomposition. The decomposition reaction of MnCO3 is studied by TG and DTA measurements as well as by isothermic and phase diagnostic investigations.
Notes:
