Notes: Amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been solid state coextruded to a series of draw ratios up to 4.4 at 50, 60, 70 and 90°C. These uniaxially drawn samples have been examined by optical microscopy and light scattering and for increases in crystallinity and birefringence as a function of draw ratio and draw temperature. The birefringence for PET may be among the highest yet reported - 0.21.

Notes: A homologous series of 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alkyl ethers (DCBEs) have been synthesized and purified for use as retention index calibrants and internal standards. They are stable, sensitive to ECD and FID and ideal for GC-MS, with base peaks at m/z 159/161. The retention index calibration against the n-alkanes for a linear temperature program (LTP) series is given and recommendations made for the most suitable members of the DCBE series for use as internal standards in organochlorine (OC) residue analysis.

Notes: A singular class of polymer reactions can be caused by mechanical stress. Sufficient storage of mechanical energy to break chemical bonds in the main chain is generally possible only on deformation of polymers of high molecular weight. The corresponding appropriate conditions of high stress may occur in both polymer processing and use. This review summarizes reports of such polymer stress reactions published principally after 1980. The survey is organized by polymer type and by analysis technique.

Notes: Analysis for oestradiol bis-tert-butyldimethylsilyl ether by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with selected reaction monitoring ([M]+. → [M-C4H9]+) using a tandem double-focusing/quadrupole instrument gave a detection limit below 10 pg. During analyses of a plasma extract, the selectivity of detection was superior to conventional selected ion monitoring. A parent ion resolution of 5000 was used to eliminate detection of all components but the chosen analyte.

Notes: Only a few reported studies have involved the uniaxial orientation of LDPE and even less on LLDPE. It is our purpose to report on characteristics of uniaxially oriented films of LLDPE that contribute to property development. The LLDPE has been coextruded at 25 and at 80°C layered as ribbons within longitudinally split billets of HDPE. The LLDPE so drawn was characterized by thermal analysis, birefringence, elastic recovery, and wide angle X-ray measurements. As a result, we can conclude that the drawing of LLDPE at the lower temperature produces a relatively high content of monoclinic crystals; the orientation behavior of LLDPE is similar to that of HDPE. The molecular network formed by entanglements and crystals reduces the draw to a maximum below 15.

Notes: Three low density polyethylenes, one long branched (A) and two linear (B and C), have been solid-state-extruded at several constant temperatures from ambient to 80°C and to draw ratios ≤ 8. The initial densities and melt indices of A, B, and C are 0.920, 0.920, and 0.935 g/cm3, and 1.9, 0.8, and 1.2, respectively. Melt-crystallized cylindrical billets were extruded through conical dies in an Instron Capillary Rheometer. The linear polymers were found to draw by extrusion more readily than the branched; all three strain-harden. Density, birefringence, tensile, and thermal properties have been evaluated as functions of extrusion temperature and draw ratio. Despite a measured loss via die swell, substantial orientation takes place during solid-state extrusion as evidenced by increases in transparency, birefringence, and tensile modulus (up to 4.5 times that of the original isotropic polymer). Depending on the polymer and the draw temperature, density does go through a minimum or shows a monotonic increase with draw by extrusion. A minimum in modulus is also observed at low draw and at all draw temperatures for all three polymers. The highest tensile moduli achieved are 0.73, 0.46, and 1.5 GPa for A, B, and C, respectively, at their highest draw ratio. The melting point for polymer B decreases with extrusion draw ratio, whereas it remains constant after a small initial drop, for the two others. For all three low density polyethylenes, birefringence increases rapidly with extrusion draw and then levels off at high draw. The birefringence limit is similar for A and B, i.e., 0.046 ± 0.004, but higher for C, i.e., 0.068 ± 0.009. This work extends beyond others in that it studies the effect of short as well as long branches in solid-state extrusion by comparing the linear and long branched LDPE polymers and LDPE with prior evaluations of HDPE.

Notes: Hydrogen/deuterium exchange and rearrangements in the molecular ion of o-(methyl-d3-thio)benzoic acid lead to fragment ions [M—OD]+ as well as [M—OH]+ and m/z 106 and 107, just as in the molecular ion of o-methoxybenzoic acid. However, the fragment ion m/z 108 has the composition C6H4S rather than C6H2D3CO as it does in the case of o-methoxy-d3-benzoic acid. By varing the repeller potential at 10 eV (and thus the residence time in the ion source), the corresponding fragments are seen to be formed more slowly from the methylthio acid than from the methoxy acid, which leads to the conclusion that H/D exchange between carboxyl and labelled methylthio is slower than it is between carboxyl and labelled methoxyl.

Notes: The molecular ion of o-methoxy-d3-benzoic acid can undergo three different rearrangements and hydrogen/deuterium exchange between the functional groups. This can result in 14 isomers of the molecular ion before it decomposes giving fragments at m/z 105, 106, 107 and 108. Three types of isomer have been identified.
