    Notes: The effects of the male antifertility agent, α-chlorohydrin, six of its derivatives, and glycidol were studied on the metabolism of washed ram spermatozoa in vitro with fructose as substrate. The α-chlorohydrin derivatives were the amino, the phosphorylated, and four glycol-bridge (ketal) compounds. All compounds except glycidol, in a concentration between 0.1 and 100 mM, reduced the aerobic glycolsis and/or oxidation of fructose. However, there was not a high correlation between the ability of these compounds to inhibit the metabolism of ram spermatozoa in vitro and their antifertility activity when administered to male rats. Other factors are clearly involved in their antifertility activity, eg, the concentration of the compounds in the epididymis and their conversion of either more or less spermicidal compounds in the body.

    Notes: Standard histological and SEM techniques have been used to examine the pair of statocyst organs located in the telson of the isopod, Cyathara polita. Each organ is formed as an invagination of the dorsal cuticle of the telson. The invagination narrows to form a stalk between the statocyst and dorsal surface. A canal courses longitudinally through this stalk and forms a continuous channel between the lumen of the cyst and the external environment. On the luminal floor of each statocyst, there are three pits; each correlates with a nodule protruding from the ventro-medial wall. From each pit, a single, bifurcating hair projects dorsally to contact the single concretion within the statocyst lumen. No other static organs have been found in this animal. Thus, maintenance of equilibrium in this species appears to be under the control of but six hairs, three in each statocyst. Innervation of each statocyst is provided by a branch of a nerve which connects anteriorly with the last abdominal ganglion.

    Description: Mitchel and Roelof (1980) reported the detection of iron in high speed solar wind flows using the small, but finite sensitivity of solid state detectors to Fe ions in the low energy (50-200 keV protons) L1 channel of the NOAA/JHU energetic particle experiment (EPE). In the current investigation, the EPE response is modeled to a convected Maxwellian to obtain the thermal velocity, flow angle, and bulk velocity of the iron distribution. It is assumed that the iron bulk flow velocity can be represented as a vector sum of the hydrogen bulk velocity and an interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) aligned velocity increment. It is found that the velocity increment is smaller than the local Alfven speed in magnitude, and that the iron thermal velocity is comparable with or greater than the proton thermal velocity, with the 'thermal' velocity defined as the square root of 2kT/m.

    Description: Results for small loop thermal models of hard X-ray bursts are extended to large loops. In this model a magnetic arch with a coronal length of 45,000 km has the electrons near the top heated to temperatures above 1 billion K. The resulting conduction fronts which form are dominated by collisionless processes and travel down the arch to the transition region and chromosphere where they evaporate off part of the latter. This relatively cool material travels back up the loop and eventually quenches the source for energy injection times of order 10 sec. Most of the X-ray emission comes from the footpoints of the arch over most of the source lifetime and the spectrum is a power law with a typical spectral index of 3.0. Even though the efficiency gain in this model is only 2.8, it is much easier from the point of view of plasma physics to heat all the electrons in a plasma than to accelerate a substantial fraction of them.

    Description: Methods for predicting the path edges and reducing observations of total solar eclipses for determining variations of the solar radius are described. Analyzed observations of the 1925 January eclipse show a 0.7 (arc second) decrease in the solar radius during the past fifty years.

    Description: Data from simultaneous readings of the line intensities, Doppler shifts, and line widths of a sunspot ion emission lines between 1170-1700 A are reported. Subsonic and supersonic flows were observed in the same line of sight above the umbra. A reduction of coronal plasma over sunspots with an electron temperature exceeding 1,000,000 K was confirmed, concurrent with enhanced emission from the transition region plasma in the temperature range 200,000-1,000,000 K. The differential emission measure is noted to have been caused to shift because of the enhancement of the transition region plasma emission, where radiative losses dominated the energy balance. Calculations of the energy balance also indicated that a detected divergence in the enthalpy flux for the umbral downflows could balance the radiative losses in the electron temperature range 30,000-200,000 K.

    Description: Detailed in situ observations from the ISEE 3 spacecraft of energetic electrons, plasma waves, and radio emission for the type II solar radio burst of February 17, 1979, are presented. The reduced, one-dimensional electron distribution function is constructed as a function of time. Since the faster electrons arrive before the slower ones, a bump on tail distribution forms which is unstable to the growth of Langmuir waves. The plasma wave growth computed from the distribution function agrees well with the observed onset of the Langmuir waves, and there is qualitative agreement between variations in the plasma wave levels and in the development of regions of positive slope in the function. The evolution of the function, however, predicts far higher plasma wave levels than those observed. The maximum levels observed are approximately equal to the threshold for nonlinear wave processes, such as oscillation two-stream instability and soliton collapse.

    Notes: Mouse zonae pellucidae contain receptors for sperm throughout their structure since spermatozoa will bind to both the inner and outer surfaces of isolated zona fragments. Antibodies raised against mechanically isolated mouse zonae pellucidae were only capable of suppressing sperm binding to the outer zona surface in association with the formation of a precipitate in this region.These results indicate that such antisera are not capable of interacting directly with the sperm receptors on the zona pellucida but rely upon the less efficient mechanism of steric hindrance to prevent sperm from gaining access to the sperm binding sites.

    Notes: Taurine and hypotaurine were examined for their efficacy in replacing sperm motility factor (SMF), prepared from bovine adrenal cortex, for in vitro fertilization in the golden hamster. Combinations of these amino acids at concentrations of 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mM together with 16 μM isoproterenol (a catecholamine β-agonist) were added to the sperm incubations. After three hours of sperm preincubation, oviductal eggs were added to the sperm suspensions and examined for penetration and stage of fertilization after three or five hours of culture. At 0.001 mM, neither taurine or hypotaurine was capable of maintaining motility of hamster sperm for four to 4½ hours or of inducing fertilization. With all other concentrations, both amino acids were found to maintain motility of sperm as well as SMF. Hypotaurine stimulated motility to a greater extent than taurine and both required isoproterenol for the greatest motility. A low proportion of cumulus-free ova were fertilized when sperm were preincubated with either amino acid alone over the range of 0.01 to 1 mM; however, over 80% fertilization was consistently obtained when isoproterenol was also present during sperm incubation. Proportions of ova fertilized with taurine or hypotaurine present during sperm preincubation were comparable to those achieved with SMF. The possibility that taurine or hypotaurine is the sperm motility factor is discussed.After three hours of sperm/egg incubation, a lag in the early events of fertilization was observed in experimental groups treated with one of the amino acids (0.01 mM) alone compared with groups treated with isoproterenol present. However, if sperm/egg incubation was extended from three to five hours, no increase in number of eggs penetrated was found. Therefore, the delay observed at three hours was considered a function of fewer numbers of capacitated sperm present in the absence of isoproterenol rather than of the need for an extended capacitation time.
