    Notes: Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 426 was grown aerobically in continuous culture with a mixture of glucose and ethanol as the carbon source. The flows of biomass, glucose, ethanol, oxygen, and carbon dioxide were measured. A model for growth with two substrates was derived. Application of this model to the above-mentioned system yielded values for YATP and P/O. The joint confidence regions for these parameters were calculated. The relevance to industrial production of bakers' yeast is discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Wear-resistance of anti-corrosion coatings in hydraulic steel constructionsDIN 55 928 gives rules for the protection of steel structures from corrosion by organic and metallic coatings. The durability against abrasion of such coatings is classified in part 5, table 8, columns 9-11, of this DIN. A notice to these columns gives indication of an abrasion-machine developed by the Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau in Karlsruhe.Giving the best results, this machine for testing the mechanic durability was chosen out of a number of testing systems. The result is an abrasion value (Abriebwert).This value enables us to classify the coatings in accordance with their durability.The abrasion machine, its main dimensions and its working are described.
    Notes: In der Tabelle 8 des Teils 5 der DIN 55 928 - Korrosionsschutz von Stahlbauten durch Beschichtungen und Überzüge - wird in Spalte 9-11 die mechanische Beanspruchung der Beschichtungen klassifiziert und in einer Bemerkung dazu auf ein Prüfgerät hingewiesen, das bei der Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau in Karlsruhe entwickelt wurde.Das Prüfgerät ist das Ergebnis einer längeren Entwicklung; es ermöglicht die Angabe eines „Abriebwertes“ als Abstufung der Belastbarkeit von Beschichtungssystemen.Die Entwicklung des Prüfgerätes wird dargelegt und das Prüfgerät sowie der Prüfvorgang beschrieben.

    Notes: Electron impact spectra of thermolysis products of organic salts heated in the ion source of a mass spectrometer may give rise to organic ions corresponding to the cation of the salt. Field ionization mass spectrometry has been used as a facile method for detemining whether such an ion is due to ionization of the corresponding radical present in the gas phase, or to an electron impact induced fragmentation of a reaction product of higher mass. By comparison of the electron impact and field ionization spectra of a series of N-methyl pyridinium, tropylium and 1,2-dithiolylium salts it has been found possible to identify the radicals formed thermolytically, when present.

    Notes: The compounds Pt3(CO)3[P(C6H5)3]4 molecular weight 1717, Pt4(CO)5[P(C6H5)3]4 molecular weight 1968 and Pt5(CO)6[P(C2H5)3]4 molecular weight 1615 are thermally labile and are slowly solvolysed by tetrahydrofuran and acetone. They cannot be analysed by means of electron impact. Field desorption, however, shows the molecular ion and [M—xCO]+· peaks.

    Description / Table of Contents: X-Ray Stress Measurement on Austenitic Steels - A Possibility of Predicting Fatigue DamageBased on the results found for fatigue tests on a ferritic steel combined with x-ray stress analysis similar investigations were carried out for an austenitic stainless steel. For that reason the Wöhler tests were interrupted after defined load cycle numbers and the residual stress and the half value breadth of the x-ray peaks were determined in the groove of the samples. The investigation has shown correlations between residual stress, load amplitudes and load cycle numbers. These relations in connection with a dependence of the breadth of the x-ray peaks from the load cycle number have been used for a non-destructive testing model of predicting the life of samples under alternating load.
    Notes: Aufbauend auf Untersuchungen an einem ferritischen Stahl wurden an Proben aus einem austenitischen Stahl Ermüdungsversuche kombiniert mit Eigenspannungsmessungen durchgeführt. Dazu wurden die Wöhlerversuche definiert nach vorgegebenen Lastwechselzahlen unterbrochen und röntgenografisch die Eigenspannungen und Interferenzbreiten im Kerb der Proben bestimmt. Es zeigten sich Abhängigkeiten der Oberflächeneigenspannungen von Lastamplituden und Lastwechselzahlen, die unter Zuhilfenahme der ebenfalls gefundenen Zusammenhänge zwischen Halbwertbreiten und Lastwechselzahlen dazu herangezogen werden, um auf zerstörungsfreiem Wege auf die Lebensdauer wechselbeanspruchter Proben zu schließen.

    Notes: The electron impact mass spectra of various methoxyhalobiphenyls have been reinvestigated. Previous findings, concerning the effect of the methoxy group upon the main fragmentation routes, have been confirmed and extended. In addition, studies of unimolecular and collision induced fragmentations of ions, using linked scan techniques, have been made. Such an approach permits the identification of substances with a minimal chromatographic separation prior to mass spectrometry. It has also led to some clarification of the fragmentation pathways leading to the observed cracking patterns.

    Description / Table of Contents: Relationship Between Composition, Elastic Modulus and Creep of Phenolic Plastics at Room TemperatureThe mechanical properties of thermosetting material can be modified by the type and quantity of filler or the combination of fillers. By this methode it is possible to produce a certain moulding powder for a certain application. The elastic modulus and the creep are significant values for short-time and long-time mechanical behaviour. The relationship between these both characteristic values and the compositions of moulded materials (multiphase phenolic resin systems) will be discussed.
    Notes: Die mechanischen Eigenschaften duroplastischer Teilchenverbundwerkstoffe können unter anderem durch die Wahl des Harzträgers beeinflußt und somit dem jeweiligen Anwendungsfall angepaßt werden. Für das mechanische Kurz- bzw. Langzeitverhalten sind der E-Modul und die Kriechdehnung als signifikant anzusehen, daher wird am Beispiel dieser beiden Werkstoffdaten der Zusammenhang von Formstoffzusammensetzung und mechanischen Eigenschaften aufgezeigt. Die untersuchten Phenoplast-Formstoffe bestehen aus den Hauptkomponenten Harz/Holzmehl/Gesteinsmehl.
