Beschreibung: The resonance line spectra of ions in the Xe I isoelectronic sequence, consisting of the five transitions to the 5p6 150 ground state from levels with J = 1 in the 5p5 5d and 6s configurations, have been observed for Cs II, Ba III, and La IV. The observations were made with a sliding spark on the 10.7-m normal-incidence vacuum spectrograph at NBS. The resonance transitions from the 5p5 6d and 7s configurations were also observed for these ions, except for that from 5p5 6d 3P1 of Ba III. Several resonance transitions from higher nd and ns levels were also observed. Estimated values for the J = 1 levels of the 5p5 7s configuration of Ce V were obtained by extrapolation. The derived ionization energies in eV are Cs II 23.17(4), Ba III 35.79(6), La IV 45.95(6), Ce V 65.55(25).

Beschreibung: The effects of water immersion on acid-base homeostasis were investigated under carefully controlled conditions. Studies of renal acidification were carried out on seven healthy male subjects, each consuming a diet containing 150 meq sodium and 100 meq potassium. Control and immersion studies were carried out on each subject on the fourth and sixth days, respectively, of dietary equilibration, by which time all subjects had achieved sodium balance. The experimental protocols on study days were similar (except for the amount of water administered).

Beschreibung: The study compares the natriuresis induced by head-out water immersion to that of a standard saline infusion and assesses the relative effectiveness of these two techniques as volume determinants of renal sodium and water handling in humans in a seated posture. The data obtained show that the volume stimulus of immersion is identical to that of standard saline-induced extracellular fluid volume expansion (ECVE) in normal seated subjects. The ability of head-out water immersion to induce a natriuresis without a concomitant increase in total blood volume and with a decrease in body weight suggests that water immersion may be preferred as an investigative tool for assessing the effects of ECVE in man.

Beschreibung: A study was undertaken to ascertain whether diuresis induced by immersion is medicated by an inhibition of ADH. Immersion resulted in a progressive decrease in ADH excretion from 80.1 + or - 7 (SEM) to 37.3 + or - 6.3 microU/min (P less than 0.025). Cessation of immersion was associated with a marked increase in ADH from 37.3 + or - 6.3 microU/min to 176.6 + or - 72.6 microU/min during the recovery hour (P less than 0.05). Concomitant with these changes, urine osmolality decreased significantly beginning as early as the initial hour of immersion from 1044 + or - 36 to 542 + or - 66 mosmol/kg H2O during the final hour of immersion (P less than 0.001). These findings are consistent with the earlier suggestion that suppression of ADH release contributes to enhanced free water clearance in hydrated subjects undergoing immersion.

Beschreibung: Some of the effects of primordial inhomogeneities on the production of H-2, He-3, and Li-7 are investigated. For the most part, temperature fluctuations have only small effects on the abundances. The density fluctuations are modeled by a unimodal distribution so that the Universe is characterized by the mean density and the relative amplitude of the density variations. It has been found that the constraint which H-2 production imposes on the mean mass density is eased somewhat by allowing for density inhomogeneities. However, unless the composition of the interstellar matter is atypical of most of the matter in the Universe, the mass density will be at least a factor of 3 below the critical density. For reasonable estimates of the pregalactic abundances, sufficient He-3 and Li-7 cannot be produced in the same model universe. Production of both Li-7 and H-2 requires large-amplitude primordial fluctuations, while sufficient He-3 and H-2 can be formed in very low-density, fairly homogeneous universes.

Beschreibung: Using NASA facilities in space (OSO-7) and on the ground (Goddard multi-channel spectrophotometer at Sacramento Peak, New Mexico) an active region has been mapped. By combining these ultraviolet, X-ray, and visible data, a physical picture of this structured region was constructed from the photosphere to the corona, corresponding to temperature regimes from 4500 K to 4,000,000 K. The morphology of the active region was studied by comparing grey-shaded images in which fine details stand out more clearly than in the contour plots. One result of the study is that gross similarities persist from the low photosphere up to high in the transition region, while some changes occur in the corona.

Beschreibung: The flow in a two foot diameter transonic rotor has been visualized using a fluorescent gas, 2, 3 butanedione, as a tracer. The technique allows the three dimensional flow to be imaged as a set of distinct planes. Quantitative static density maps can be obtained after correcting the images for distortion and nonlinearities introduced by the illumination and imaging systems. The visualized flow is compared to data taken simultaneously by high frequency pressure transducers near the rotor entrance and exit planes.
