    Description: In this paper we demonstrate the utility of the Polar Ozone and Aerosol Measurement (POAM)III data for providing semiglobal three-dimensional ozone fields during the Stratospheric Aerosoland Gas Experiment (SAGE) III Ozone Loss and Validation Experiment (SOLVE) winter. As asolar occultation instrument, POAM III measurements were limited to latitudes of 63°N to 68°Nduring the SOLVE campaign but covered a wide range of potential vorticity. Using establishedmapping techniques, we have used the relation between potential vorticity and ozone measured byPOAM III to calculate three-dimensional ozone mixing ratio fields throughout the NorthernHemisphere on a daily basis during the 1999/2000 winter. To validate the results, we haveextensively compared profiles obtained from ozonesondes and the Halogen Occultation Experimentto the proxy O3 interpolated horizontally and vertically to the correlative measurement locations. Onaverage, the proxy O3 agrees with the correlative observations to better than ~5%, at potentialtemperatures below about 900 K and latitudes above about 30°N, demonstrating the reliability ofthe reconstructed O3 fields in these regions. We discuss the application of the POAM proxy ozoneprofiles for calculating photolysis rates along the ER-2 and DC-8 flight tracks during the SOLVEcampaign, and we present a qualitative picture of the evolution of polar stratospheric ozonethroughout the winter.

    Notes: Summary We have studied the all or none cell response of Ca2+-dependent K+ channels to added Ca in human red cells depleted of ATP by incubation with iodoacetate and inosine. A procedure was used which allows separation and differential analysis of responding and nonresponding cells. Responding (H for heavy) cells incubated in medium containing 5mM K lose KCl and water and increase their density to the point of sinking on diethylphthalate (specific gravity=1.12) on centrifugation. Nonresponding (L for light) cells do not lose KCl at all. There is no intermediate behavior. Increasing the Ca concentration in the medium increases the fraction of cells which become H. No differences in the sensitivity to Ca2+ of the individual K+ channels were detected in inside-out vesicles prepared either from H or from L cells. The Ca content of H cells was higher than that of L cells. Cells depleted of ATP by incubation with iodoacetate and inosine sustain pump-leak Ca fluxes of about 15 μmol/liter cells per hour. ATP seems to be resynthesized in these cells at the expense of cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate stores at a rate of about 150 μmol/liter cells per hour. Inhibition of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate phosphatase by tetrathionate increased 6–8 times the measured rate of uptake of external45Ca. This was accompanied by an increase in the fraction of H cells. All or none cell responses of Ca2+-dependent K channels have also been evidenced in intact human red cells on addition of Pb. They have the same characteristics as those in responding and nonresponding cells. The detailed study of the kinetics of Pb-induced shrinkage of red cells suspended in medium containing 5mM K showed that changes of Pb concentration changed not only the fraction of H cells but also the rate of shrinkage of responding cells. H cells generated by Pb treatment contained significantly more lead than L cells. The above results suggest that the two all or none cell responses studied here can be explained by heterogeneity of agonist distribution among cells. Since pump-leak fluxes exist in both cases, differences of agonist distribution could be generated by heterogeneity of pumping among cells. This interpretation turns interest from K channels to Ca pumps to explain the heterogeneous behavior of red cells in response to a uniform stimulus.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: To compare the diabetogenic effects of deflazacort (D) versus prednisone (PN) using a dosage ratio of 1.5 mg deflazacort:1 mg prednisone. Methods: Thirty-three patients suffering from various active connective tissue or chronic inflammatory diseases were randomized to be treated with D or PN, assuming a therapeutic equipotency ratio of 1.5 mg D:1 mg PN. Neither dosage nor glucocorticoid employed were modified during the study. Patients had not received steroid treatment during the month prior to their inclusion date. Fasting glucose, glycosilated haemoglobin and fructosamine were determined before and after 1 month of treatment. Non-diabetic patients were also submitted to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at entry and after 1 month. Results were compared by univariate, and multivariate tests to correct the effects of age, body mass index and diagnosis. Results: After 1 month of treatment there were no differences between D and PN in fasting glucose, glycosilated haemoglobin, or fructosamine. OGTT performed after treatment showed similar glucose values for both treatment groups. Patients treated with D had insulin levels at min 60 of the post-treatment OGTT which were higher than those treated with PN [114.1 (62.8) mcUI · ml−1 versus 73.5 (32.7) mcUI · ml−1, P = 0.049], but the difference lost its statistical significance in the multivariate analysis. Conclusion: D and PN have similar effects on glucose tolerance when an equipotency ratio of 1.5 mg D:1 mg PN is employed. Previous studies employing a ratio of 1.2:1 mg may have understimated the adverse effects of D on glucose metabolism.

    Notes: Summary The effect of a 3-day oral course of ranitidine on plasma aldosterone level has been studied in 6 normotensive volunteers maintained in a state of sodium depletion. A significant fall in plasma aldosterone (p〈0.05–0.02), in both the overnight recumbency levels and in the levels obtained during a two hour period of ambulation was observed. The change took place in the absence of variation in plasma renin activity and potassium. Plasma cortisol and prolactin levels were lower after ranitidine at the beginning of the test but their values were not significantly different after ambulation during ranitidine therapy. Ranitidine appears to interfere with aldosterone secretion in vivo.

    Notes: A theoretical approach to the problem of the marked irreproducibility of certain chemical reactions studied by Epstein's group at Brandeis University is presented. The model is based on the use of a Langevin equation with a multiplicative noise. Stirring and finite volume effects are incorporated in our approach. Analytical results are provided for the mean first passage time (MFPT), which is the appropriate quantity we associate here with the reaction time.

    Notes: A recently proposed theoretical framework appropriate to the study of the stochastic behavior of several chemical systems is used to analyze the irreproducibility of the observed reaction times in the chlorite–iodide clock reaction. Noise terms are incorporated through the kinetic constants and their intensity is further correlated with the inverse of the stirring rate. Analytical and simulation results are obtained for the first moments of the reaction time distribution. These results are compared with recent experimental data obtained by Nagypál and Epstein.
