Abstract Faraday rotation and linear birefringence of GdCrO3 were measured in the spectral range 0.8 to 2.0 μm at liquid nitrogen temperature. Good agreement is obtained between the experimental data and the theoretical values of rotation, calculated by the use of the formula describing Faraday rotation in the presence of the linear birefringence. The intrinsic Faraday rotation as a function of the wavelength is determined and it is probably due to higher-energy optical transitions.
