Notes: Abstract The Y chromosome heterochromatin in Rumex thyrsiflorus has been analyzed. In natural populations the Y chromosome shows a higher morphological variability than the X chromosome. The total duration of replication of Y chromosomes is about 2 hrs longer than that of euchromatin. Autoradiography with tritiated thymidine showed that chromocentres formed by Y chromosomes in interphase nuclei retain their heterochromatic form during DNA replication. — Y chromosome heterochromatin in interphase nuclei is stained pink, while the rest of the nucleus stains green after fast green-eosin staining for histones. — During the premeiotic stage of PMC development Y chromosomes are no longer visible as compact bodies and become more fuzzy in appearance. A diffuse state of Y coincides with intense RNA synthesis. Therefore genetic activity of Y chromosomes or their parts during premeiotic stage of microsporogenesis is postulated.

Notes: Abstract Faraday rotation and linear birefringence of GdCrO3 were measured in the spectral range 0.8 to 2.0 μm at liquid nitrogen temperature. Good agreement is obtained between the experimental data and the theoretical values of rotation, calculated by the use of the formula describing Faraday rotation in the presence of the linear birefringence. The intrinsic Faraday rotation as a function of the wavelength is determined and it is probably due to higher-energy optical transitions.

Notes: Summary The method of analysis of DNA in mammalian cells by alkaline elution from filters (Kohn et al. 1974) was adapted for studies on yeast DNA. By this technique spheroplasts obtained from yeast cells are lysed on filters and single-stranded DNA fragments selectively eluted by alkaline solutions. The procedure was applied to monitor the occurrence of replication intermediates and production of DNA single-strand breakage by MMS, and its repair in growth medium.

Notes: The technique of Brillouin spectroscopy has been used to determine the adiabatic elastic constants of single crystals of the orientationally disordered phase (phase I) of CBr4 .The values of the elastic constants at 333 K are C11 =42.2, C12 =33.6, and C44 =16.1 (in units of kbar) and suggest that there is strong rotation–translation coupling in the k=0 acoustic wave vector regime. Because x-ray Laue diffraction was not possible in solid CBr4 , the necessary orientation of the single crystals was determined by also using the Brillouin scattering spectra.

Notes: The technique of Brillouin spectroscopy has been used to determine the adiabatic elastic constants, including their temperature dependence, and the elasto-optic coefficient ratios of single crystals of the metastable orientationally disordered phase Ia of CCl4. The values of the elastic constants at 244.1 K are C11=35.7, C12=31.6, and C44=11.1 (in units of kbar) and the elasto-optic coefficient ratios are P12/P11=0.85 and P44/P11=0.22. The elastic constants results suggest that there is strong rotation–translation coupling in the k=0 acoustic wave vector regime and that this coupling is likely responsible for the metastability of the fcc phase Ia with respect to the rhombohedral phase Ib.

Notes: The technique of Brillouin spectroscopy has been used to determine the full set of adiabatic elastic constants of the orientationally disordered rhombohedral Ib phase of CCl4. The values of the elastic constants at 247.7 K are C11=45.4, C12=29.2, C13=27.3, C14=−1.2, C33=43.3 and C44=9.5 (in units of kbar). This system is elastically quite isotropic and can be closely approximated by hexagonal symmetry. The bulk modulus (33.5 kbar) is almost identical to that of the metastable orientationally disordered cubic Ia phase of CCl4.

Notes: Surface acoustic modes in GaP crystals have been observed and identified using the technique of high-contrast Brillouin spectroscopy. Surface acoustic wave velocities were determined for (100) GaP in different directions of wave propagation. The values of the velocities are: 3250 m/s in the [010] direction and 3467 m/s in the [011] direction on the (100) GaP surface. These results are discussed and compared with theoretical calculations and with similar measurements in GaAs and Si.

Notes: Surface-acoustic-wave propagation in 200-keV N+- and 100-keV Ar+-implanted GaP have been studied by means of high-resolution Brillouin spectroscopy. The acoustic-wave velocity variations with dose showed marked softening (−13% for Ar+ implantation) associated with progressive disorder, towards amorphization, of the implanted layers. For Ar+ implantation a dose of 3×1014 cm−2 corresponded to the onset of disorder saturation and amorphization of GaP, while for N+ implantation, even at 1×1016 ions cm−2, the amorphous phase was not reached. Annealing studies indicated a partial recovery of the crystal lattice, the most successful being for nonamorphized samples.
