Notes: The consequence of imposing stationary constraints on first-order hyperbolic differential systems is analyzed in detail and it is proved that such constraints can be compatible only with systems admitting zero-speed waves. The definition of constrained hyperbolicity is presented and examined with a view to its implications in the theory of wave propagation and in connection with second-order hyperbolic systems.

Notes: Abstract On adopting the usual view that a second order differential system is hyperbolic provided that the equivalent first order one is, a theorem is proved which offers an intrinsic procedure to check hyperbolicity of second order systems. In deducing such result, the link between second order and first order systems is analyzed in detail and a number of relevant results is proved.

Notes: Abstract Shock waves and the relevant Rankine-Hugoniot conditions may be inadequate even in simple cases. As an example, the electromagnetic field generated by a point charge, whose velocity jumps from0 to a constant valueυ, not only jumps across a spherical surface expanding at light speed, but also includes aδ-distribution term. This suggests that the concept of higher order shock waves be introduced, the associated compatibility conditions being also deduced.

Notes: Abstract The so-called “structural equations” for generalized Killing-Yano tensors are derived. The first set of integrability conditions for the structural equations are also obtained. Several consequences of the integrability conditions are then discussed. For instance, it is shown that the maximal number of generalized Killing-Yano tensors occurs in flat space.

Notes: Abstract Given the four-velocityV describing the motion of a continuous medium, the covariant derivativeg(V) may be uniquely decomposed in terms of the vorticity tensor Ω, the expansion tensorK, and the four-accelerationC. In the present paper we examine the integrability conditions on the fields Ω,K, andC ensuring the existence of a four-velocity fieldV.

Notes: Abstract The general solution for the third-order Killing tensor equation in the Schwarzschild space-time is written down. It follows that the Schwarzschild metric admits only redundant Killing tensors of order 3.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Letγ denote the congruence of null geodesics associated with a given optical observer inV 4. We prove thatγ determines a unique collection of vector fieldsM′(α) (α =1, 2, 3) and ∂′(0) overV 4, satisfying a weak version of Killing's conditions. This allows a natural interpretation of these fields as the infinitesimal generators of spatial rotations and temporal translation relative to the given observer. We prove also that the definition of the fieldsM′(α) and ∂′(0) is mathematically equivalent to the choice of a distinguished affine parameter f along the curves ofγ, playing the role of a “retarded distance” from the observer. The relation between f and other possible definitions of distance is discussed.
