    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Sono state derivate le espressioni per la sezione d'urto totale ei coefficienti di riflessione e di trasmissione per collisioni di electtroni da parte di un potenziale schermato in presenza di un campo magnetico quantizzante, con il formalismo della funzione di Green. Sono stati pure ricavati il teorema ottico e il valore limite della sezion d'urto totale per valori di campo magnetico tendenti a zero. È stata fatta un'analisi numerica dell'andamento della sezione d'urto totale per diverse intensità di campo magnetico e valori della costante di schermo. Le sezioni d'urto risultano apprezzabilmente diverse da quella senza campo solo per intensità del campo magnetico ed energie delle particelle incidenti tali che soltanto pochi livelli di Landau possono essere eccitati.
    Abstract: Резюме Выводятся поперечные сечения рассеяния, коэффициенты отражения и прохождения для потенциального рассеяния заряженных частиц в присутствии квантующего постоянного магнитного поля, используя подход гриновских функций. Также получаются оптическая теорема и предел поперечного сечения для исчезающе малых значений магнитного поля. Проводится численный анализ полного поперечного сечения для различных интенсивностей магнитного поля и различных величин постоянной экранирования. Получено, что полные поперечные сечения существенно отличаются от сечений в отсутствии магнитного поля только для таких интенсивностей магнитного поля и энергий падающих частиц, когда открыты лишь несколько каналов Ландау.
    Notes: Summary Scattering cross-sections, reflection and transmission coefficients are derived for charged-particle potential scattering in the presence of a quantizing constant magnetic field within the Green's function approach. The optical theorem and the limit of the cross-section for vanishing values of the magnetic field have also been obtained. A numerical analysis of the total cross-section for different magnetic-field intensities and values of the screening constant has been performed. The total cross-sections are found to differ significantly from the field-free ones only for magnetic-field intensities and incident particle energies such that only few Landau channels are open.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si è dedotta la sezione d’urto totale per collisioni di electroni su un bersaglio dotato di struttura, in presenza di un forte campo magnetico. La presenza del campo magnetico modifica il moto degli electtroni incidenti ed anche le condizioni d’interferenza si modificano, dipendendo adesso sia dall’energia iniziale della particella incidente che dall’intensità e dalla direzione del campo magnetico applicato. Tale sezione d’urto è stata inoltre calcolata numericamente per il caso di due soli centri di scattering in geometria perpendicolare.
    Abstract: Резюме Исследуется рассеяние электронов на структурированной мишени в присутствии квантующего статического магнитного пола, в предположении, что магнитное поле не влияет на поведение массивных ядер мишени, а только влияет на движение падающих электронов. В этом случае движение электронов в плоскости, перпендикулярной магнитному полю, является ограниченным в области, определяемой циклотронным радиусом ρ0=(cℏ/|e|B)1/2, который при определенных значениях интенсивности магнитного поля может быть сравнимым с расстоянием между двумя рассеивающими центрами. Известные условия интерференции в отсутствии поля изменяются, в зависимости от энергии падающей частицы и интенсивности и направления магнитного поля. Подробно обсуждается общий случаь трехмерного рассеяния. Приводятся численные результаты для случая двух рассеивающих центров в перпендикулярной геометрии.
    Notes: Summary We have studied the scattering of electrons by a structured target in the presence of a quantizing static magnetic field, under the assumption that the presence of the field does not affect the behaviour of the massive target nuclei, but it influences only the motion of the incident electrons. In this case, the electron motion in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field is confined within a typical distance given by the cyclotron radius ρ0=(cℏ/|e|B)1/2, that for particular values of the intensity of the magnetic field can be comparable with the distance between two scattering centres. The known field-free interference conditions are modified, depending both on the energy of the incident particle and on the intensity and the direction of the magnetic field. The general case of a three-dimensional scattering array has been derived in detail. Numerical results are given for the case of two scattering centres in perpendicular geometry.

    Notes: Summary The total cross-section for potential scattering in the presence of a strong magnetic field presents singularities and exhibits giant growth (cyclotron resonances) at values of the incident particle energy exactly matching the differences between the initial-and final-state Landau levels. In this paper (in cylindrical coordinates) a higher-order modified Born series has been derived that can be summed at all orders giving a nondivergent total cross-section at the Landau thresholds.

    Notes: The description of the Weibel instability linear stage for a plasma interacting with an ultrashort laser pulse is given. Pulse durations both smaller and larger than the inverse collision frequency of the thermal electrons are considered. In the latter case the pulse duration is smaller than the thermal electron heating time. The growth rate of the instability is derived and the possibility of a considerable quasistationary magnetic field amplification demonstrated. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The theory of the linear stage of the Weibel instability growth due to anisotropic heating of electrons undergoing inverse bremsstrahlung absorption of high frequency electromagnetic radiation is reported. The possibility is shown of a significant amplification of spontaneous magnetic fields for both the cases of circularly and linearly polarized high frequency radiation. Numerical calculations and comparisons are reported for a wide range of the process parameters, covering the cases of weak and strong high-frequency radiation fields. Among others, if the linearly polarized field is strong, the magnetic field amplification for typical conditions is found to be less significant as compared to the case of strong circularly polarized field. The reverse result is found for the case of weak linearly and circularly polarized fields. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Inverse bremsstrahlung absorption of electromagnetic radiation in plasma with anisotropic two-temperature bi-Maxwellian electron distribution function over velocities is investigated. In the case of a weak field, absorption is more effective if the radiation field is polarized in the plane in which the plasma electrons have the smaller of the two temperatures. In the case when the distribution function is highly anisotropic, absorption changes strongly when the field polarization changes its direction with respect to the temperature anisotropy axis. In the intermediate domain, when the field is strong in directions not very close to that of the larger temperature, both absorption efficiency and degree of its anisotropy decrease. The conditions when the absorbed power practically does not depend on the field are established. Finally, in the case of a strong field, absorption decreases further while the degree of anisotropy is a weakly changing logarithmic function of effective electron temperatures. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Tandem Van de Graaff at Brookhaven National Laboratory has delivered pulsed gold beam to the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) and AGS Booster since 1992 for relativistic heavy ion physics. There is an ongoing effort to improve the quality and intensity of the negative ion beam delivered to the Tandem from the present Cs sputter sources. Because the beam energy is low (approximately 30 keV) and the current high, there are significant losses due to space charge forces. One of the ways being explored to overcome these losses is to neutralize the space charge forces with ionized background gas. On an ion source test bench, using three different gases (Ar, N2, and Xe), the percentage of current transported from the source to a downstream Faraday cup was increased from 10% to 40% by bleeding in gas. Bleeding in Xe resulted in the best transmission. The time dependence of the neutralization as a function of gas pressure was also observed. This system is presently being transferred to the Negative Ion Injector of the Tandem for use in upcoming heavy ion experiments. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
