    Notes: Abstract The 1994 Shikotan earthquake was one of the greatest earthquakes in recent years with a magnitude ofM s 8.0. A tsunami survey was conducted by Russian and U.S. geophysicists from October 16–30, 1994, less than two weeks after the earthquake. The survey results and a numerical hindcast simulation are reported. Tsunami focusing effect at locations supposedly sheltered by the island chain is discussed. Based on the obtained data, tsunamis which attacked Shikotan Island are characterized as long waves (the order of 10–20 min wave period) with a positive leading wave. Possible consequences of the positive leading wave form are discussed in relation to the observed minimal destruction of beach vegetation and relatively small transport of marine sediment onto the shore. The high-quality tide-gage record in Malokurilskaya Bay indicates the occurrence of a 53 cm subsidence at the site.

    Notes: A theory is developed to describe the generation of edge waves on a uniform beach by a wave-maker. The theory is based on the linear shallow-water equations. The wave-maker is a vertical plate spanning between the shoreline and the paddle axis offshore, and oscillates periodically in the alongshore direction. It is found theoretically that only propagating modes exist; the evanescent modes are always accompanied by incoming waves from offshore and are not permissible in this case. For each propagation mode the cross-shore variation is described by the Laguerre polynomial with an exponentially decaying amplitude. Laboratory experiments are performed and experimental data are compared with theoretical solutions. Since the viscous damping is ignored in the theory, the wave amplitudes for the experimental data are usually lower than the theoretical predictions. However, the cross-shore variations of the wave form are predicted well by the theory. Furthermore, from both theoretical and experimental data, it is shown that wave fields are dominated by the Stokes edge-wave mode in the low frequency range, f〈0.5 Hz. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Turbulence generated in bores is found to be sporadic and three dimensional when the Froude number is less than approximately 2.0. The turbulence characteristics behind the front are strongly affected by the behavior of the surface roller; the turbulence is created by intermittent advection of the recirculating flow of the surface roller. Although the one-dimensional approximation of a bore motion is identical to that of a hydraulic jump in an inviscid fluid, there are fundamental differences in a real fluid environment. When the Froude number is less than approximately 1.7, the difference in the shear-flow field between a bore and hydraulic jump affects their turbulence spreading rates.

    Notes: Abstract The bulk and surface chemistries of four sets of commercially available SiC whiskers made by three manufacturers were determined. The oxygen content varied significantly, ranging in the bulk from 1.9 to 0.6 at.% and on the surface from 35 to 15 at.%. Surface analysis as obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy also indicated that the oxygen species differed significantly with whisker supplier; each of three of the whisker sets contained a surface species that is very similar to that found in a Si-O-C glass, while one whisker surface appeared to have a silica-rich surface. Surface carbon concentrations varied significantly, while silicon concentrations did not. Scanning transmission electron micrographs indicate significant morphological variations (i.e., twinning, branching, kinks, surface roughness, etc.) occur in all of the whisker types.

    Notes: Abstract Nearshore behaviors of tsunamis, specifically those formed as a single uniform bore, are investigated experimentally in a laboratory environment. The transition process from tsunami bore to runup is described by the ‘momentum exchange’ process between the bore and the small wedge-shaped water body along the shore: the bore front itself does not reach the shoreline directly, but the large bore mass pushes the small, initially quiescent water in front of it. The fluid motions near the runup water line appear to be complex. The complex flow pattern must be caused by irregularities involved in the driving bore and turbulence advected into the runup flow. Those experimental results suggest that the tsunami actions at the shoreline involve significant mean kinetic energy together with violent turbulence. Even though the behaviors of bore motion were found to be different from those predicted by the shallow-water wave theory, the maximum runup height appears to be predictable by the theory if the value of the initial runup velocity is modified (reduced). Besides the friction effect, this reduction of the initial runup velocity must be related to the transition process as well as the highly interacting three-dimensional runup motion.

    Description: The transformation of long waves—such as tsunamis and storm surges—evolving over a continental shelf is investigated. We approach this problem numerically using a pseudo-spectral method for a higher-order Euler formulation. Solitary waves and undular bores are considered as models for the long waves. The bathymetry possesses a periodic ridge-valley configuration in the alongshore direction which facilitates a means by which we may observe the effects of refraction, diffraction, focusing, and shoaling. In this scenario, the effects of wave focusing and shoaling enhance the wave amplitude and phase speed in the shallower regions of the domain. The combination of these effects leads to a wave pattern that is atypical of the usual behavior seen in linear shallow-water theory. A reciprocating behavior in the amplitude on the ridge and valley for the wave propagation causes wave radiation behind the leading waves, hence, the amplitude approaches a smaller asymptotic value than the equivalent case with no lateral variation. For an undular bore propagating in one dimension over a smooth step, we find that the water surface resolves into five different mean water levels. The physical mechanisms for this phenomenon are provided.
