Notes: The objectives of this study were to compare efficiency of evaluation for resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB) under two inoculation methods in a recurrent selection programme. Fifty selected homozygous F5 fertile lines, from each of five cycles (C0, C1, C2, C3 and C4) of recurrent selection, and two control cultivars were evaluated in a split-plot design in 1995 and 1996 under the soil-surface inoculation with Fusarium graminearum-colonized kernels and the single-floret inoculation with ascospore suspension. Comparison of the two inoculation methods using means, ranges, coefficients of variation, heritabilities and correlations among infected spikelet rate (ISR), reaction index (RI) and disease index (DI) indicated that FHB resistance could be evaluated with similar accuracy and precision using either of the two inoculation methods. Regressions of disease scores in the soil-surface inoculation on disease scores in the single-surface inoculation were positive and highly significant, showing a strong relationship between both inoculation methods for FHB resistance. The percentage of lines with similar performance for FHB disease scores in both inoculation methods was high. The soil-surface inoculation and single-floret inoculation appear to be useful techniques for evaluating numerous individuals of segregating population and screening advanced homozygous lines for FHB resistance in a recurrent selection programme in wheat, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Hydroxyapatite powders were made by reacting orthophosphoric acid with calcium hydroxide and dense bioactive coatings were subsequently produced by the plasma spray technique. Three types of hydroxyapatite (flame spheroidized) monolayer coatings and three types of functionally graded coatings were manufactured. It was found that average microhardness values of monolayer coatings decreased as the indentation load increased. The relationship between indentation load and indent diagonal length observed Meyer's law. Microhardness and fracture toughness of coatings were affected by characteristics of feedstock powders for plasma spraying. The indentation fracture toughness of coatings could be significantly increased by incorporating a toughening phase. ©1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Ba-SEE Fluorkarbonate Cebait, Huangoit und Cordylit kommen in einem Karbonatitgang bei Bayan Obo, Innere Mongolei, Nord-China, vor.
Notes: Summary The new occurrence in a carbonatite dyke at Bayan Obo, Inner Mongolia, North China, of the Ba-REE fluorocarbonate minerals cebaite, hunghoite and cordylite is presented, together with their chemical composition, rare earth element (REE) patterns, and syntaxial intergrowth relationships. These syntaxial textures, investigated by scanning and electron microprobe techniques, are interpreted in terms of the cooling history during the late-stage crystallization of the carbonatite magma or possible later events. The REE distribution patterns of the Ba-REE fluorocarbonate minerals in the dyke are similar to those of the corresponding minerals in the dolomite marble that hosts the giant REE-Nb-Fe ore body at Bayan Obo, providing evidence that the two may be cogenetic.

Notes: Using electron diffraction patterns and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM), a trace 114R SiC in commercial α-SiC powder (mainly 6H SiC according to X-ray diffraction) has been discovered. In a hexagonal unit cell its stacking sequence is [(33)4(34)2]3, the periodicity along the c axis is 286.14 Å and a = b = 3.073 Å. 114R belongs to the structure series of (33)〈inf/〉n34(33)〈inf/〉m34 predicted theoretically by Pandey & Krishna [Mater. Sci. Eng. (1975), 20, 243–249] on the basis of the faulted matrix model.

Notes: Abstract A laboratory-prepared contaminated soil was partitioned into four fractions, namely carbonate, Fe/Mn oxides, organic matter and clay mineral, according to the form in which the heavy metal bound with soil constituents. Individual contaminated soil fractions and synthetic soils were prepared for the study of soil extraction using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The effect of contact time and EDTA concentration were evaluated for both individual soil fractions and synthetic soils. The extraction reached equilibrium rapidly, after about 30 min. A 0.01 M EDTA solution was less effective than a 0.05 M or a 0.10 M EDTA. EDTA was proved to be effective for metal removal from the four individual soil fractions and synthetic soils. In general, approximately 90% of metals were removed from synthetic soils by 0.10 M EDTA. EDTA extraction of Pb from a contaminated carbonate fraction was thought to be affected by the formation of lead carbonates. A simple equation based on the sum of the released heavy metal from the individual components is used to check if there are interactions among the different soil components when mixed. The estimated values agreed well with the experimentally measured results only for the 0.10 M EDTA system.

Notes: Abstract In order to investigate the effect of transmembrane Ca2+ gradient on Gs mediated coupling of β-AR and adenylyl cyclase, β-AR from duck erythrocytes and Gs and adenylyl cyclase from bovine brain cortices were co-reconstituted into asolectin liposomes with different transmembrane Ca2+ gradient. These proteoliposomes were proven to be impermeable to water-soluble substances. The results obtained indicate that a physiological transmembrane Ca2− gradient (1000-fold) is essential for higher stimulation of adenylyl cyclase by hormone-activated β-AR via coupling to Gs and can be further enhanced by the decrease of such Ca2+ gradient within certain range (100 fold) following Ca2+ influx into cells during signal transduction. Fluorescence polarization of DPH revealed that transmembrane Ca2+ gradient modulates adenylyl cyclase and its stimulation by hormones through mediating a change in lipid fluidity. Correspondent conformational changes of β-AR were also detected from the fluorescence spectra and quenching of Acrylodan-labelled β-AR in those proteoliposomes. It is suggested that a proper transmembrane Ca2+ gradient is essential for the optimal fluidity of the phospholipid bilayer in the proteoliposomes, which favors the formation of a suitable conformation of the reconstituted β-AR and thus promotes the stimulation of adenylyl cyclase activities by hormone-activated β-AR via Gs.
