Notes: The two-magnon absorption of the electromagnetic waves in the exchange noncollinear magnetic phase of four-sublattice antiferromagnet Nd2CuO4 has been considered. The spin-wave density of states and the frequency dependencies of the absorption coefficient have been calculated. It is shown that the intensity of the two-magnon absorption by exchange magnons in exchange-noncollinear magnets is substantially larger than in magnets collinear in the exchange approximation.

Notes: Structure of 180° one-dimensional domain wall (DW) in a uniaxial ferromagnet in the presence of an external magnetic field arbitrarily oriented with respect to the DW has been investigated. Solutions of the system of equations which describe the behavior of the magnetic moment inside the DW in the case when the magnetization azimuthal angle is dependent upon the coordinate normal to the DW have been obtained and influence of magnetic field on the structure of the DW analyzed. Dependences of the effective widths of the distributions of both the polar and azimuthal angles of magnetization across the DW proper have been obtained. The effective width due to the azimuthal angle variation along the DW normal was found to increase with increasing transverse field. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Within a recently developed axiomatic formalism for construction of stochastic field equations of motion a new form of the equation for damped dynamics of magnetization in ferromagnets is proposed. It takes into account spatially inhomogeneous dissipation due to exchange interactions and replaces the customary dissipation constant (due to relativistic effects) by a dissipation operator. This operator is constructed here by comparison of the resultant phenomenological spin wave spectra with results of microscopic calculations. Dynamic description of relaxation of the modulus of magnetization is discussed.

Notes: An improved model is proposed to deal with the magnetic bilayer systems taking into account the contribution of the anisotropy energy and biquadratic exchange coupling to elaborate on the evolution of the magnetoresistance (MR) ratio and magnetization process. The results indicate that the characteristic behavior of the MR ratio depends distinctly on both the biquadratic coupling constant and the layer thickness. The profile of the MR ratio was found to vary from an inverted bell shape to a concave pyramid with increasing biquadratic coupling strength, and decays sharply with the layer thickness. This model calculation helps us to provide a venue for further understanding the MR or giant magnetoresistance behavior of the magnetic multilayer system. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetic and structural properties were investigated for the 2 ML Co/Cu(100) films grown at various temperatures from 125 to 350 K. By precisely controlling the film thickness, the influence of thickness on Curie temperature (TC) due to the finite size effect can be excluded. The Curie temperature of the 2 ML Co keeps almost invariant for the growth temperature (Tg) below 250 K, and drops drastically at Tg higher than 275 K. For Tg=340 K, TC dropped to 170 K which is only about half of 325 K for Tg=125 K. Accompanied with the increase of TC for the films grown at lower temperatures, the remanent Kerr signal as well as coercivity were enhanced. According to a simple theoretical estimation, the change of TC due to the variation of the magnetization and anisotropy was found to be consistent with the experimental results. The enhancement in TC or magnetization and anisotropy with various Tg should be traced back to the presence of island growth in the films grown at lower temperatures. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The influence of the nonconservation of magnetization modulus on the steady-state motion of a planar domain wall in the presence of an external field normal to the anisotropy axis is studied. It is shown that the nonconservation of magnetization modulus gives a noticeable contribution to the domain wall mobility in ferromagnets with narrow line of ferromagnetic resonance and almost does not affect the domain wall mobility in ferromagnets with wide line of the ferromagnetic resonance. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Acoustic measurements on Nd2CuO4 single crystals have recently revealed a ferroelastic phase transition at about Tc=5 K. In view of the strong magnetoelastic coupling in the compound it was attributed to an additional reorientation of Cu spins. In the present report it is shown that this transition can be successfully described if one takes the Nd magnetic subsystem into account explicitly. This approach requires treating a phenomenological Hamiltonian within invariants of the fourth order in spins only, which is natural for a tetragonal symmetry of the system. Complementary information about the strength of Nd–Nd interactions has been derived. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Using electron diffraction patterns and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM), a trace 114R SiC in commercial α-SiC powder (mainly 6H SiC according to X-ray diffraction) has been discovered. In a hexagonal unit cell its stacking sequence is [(33)4(34)2]3, the periodicity along the c axis is 286.14 Å and a = b = 3.073 Å. 114R belongs to the structure series of (33)〈inf/〉n34(33)〈inf/〉m34 predicted theoretically by Pandey & Krishna [Mater. Sci. Eng. (1975), 20, 243–249] on the basis of the faulted matrix model.

Notes: Summary We propose and objective method whereby the density of Shannon's “information” associated with the retrieval of a profile of atmospheric variables from satellite-derived infrared radiance measurements may be estimated. The technique is a natural extension of one we previously proposed to estimate the effective data density in a profile. We test the method in a comparison of simulated satellite instruments to show that the method does indeed provide an objective summary of the spatial distribution of each instrument's information content. We propose that further extensions of the method be developed to include other more traditional data sources in a fully three-dimensional scheme. We also note that analogous and compatible methods may be used to diagnose the information content of meteorological analysis and forecast fields relative to the information contained in the covariance, at the appropriate season, of the corresponding climate fields.
