    Description: Objective: To assess the impact of different smoking behaviors of caregivers on environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure in children aged 5–6 years in Changsha, China. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, random digit-dial telephone survey of caregivers (n = 543) between August and October 2013. Caregivers’ smoking behaviors were collected by a questionnaire. Exposure assessment was based upon determination of urinary cotinine levels in children employing gas chromatography–triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Results: In children not living with a smoker, children living with one smoker, and children living with more than one smoker at home, median urinary cotinine concentrations (ng/mL) were 0.72, 2.97, and 4.46, respectively. For children living with one smoker, median urinary cotinine levels of children exposed to ETS were associated with caregiver smoking behaviors, i.e., if a caregiver consumed more cigarettes (>20 compared with ≤10; 7.73 versus 2.29 ng/mL, respectively). Conclusions: The magnitude of ETS exposure in children is correlated with the smoking behaviors of the caregiver. Counseling for smoking cessation and educational interventions are needed urgently for smoking caregivers to increase their awareness about ETS exposure and to encourage smoking cessation at home or to take precautions to protect children’s health.

    Description: This study presents efficient vision-based finger detection, tracking, and event identification techniques and a low-cost hardware framework for multi-touch sensing and display applications. The proposed approach uses a fast bright-blob segmentation process based on automatic multilevel histogram thresholding to extract the pixels of touch blobs obtained from scattered infrared lights captured by a video camera. The advantage of this automatic multilevel thresholding approach is its robustness and adaptability when dealing with various ambient lighting conditions and spurious infrared noises. To extract the connected components of these touch blobs, a connected-component analysis procedure is applied to the bright pixels acquired by the previous stage. After extracting the touch blobs from each of the captured image frames, a blob tracking and event recognition process analyzes the spatial and temporal information of these touch blobs from consecutive frames to determine the possible touch events and actions performed by users. This process also refines the detection results and corrects for errors and occlusions caused by noise and errors during the blob extraction process. The proposed blob tracking and touch event recognition process includes two phases. First, the phase of blob tracking associates the motion correspondence of blobs in succeeding frames by analyzing their spatial and temporal features. The touch event recognition process can identify meaningful touch events based on the motion information of touch blobs, such as finger moving, rotating, pressing, hovering, and clicking actions. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed vision-based finger detection, tracking, and event identification system is feasible and effective for multi-touch sensing applications in various operational environments and conditions.

    Description: Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery has been used as a promising data source for monitoring maritime activities, and its application for oil and ship detection has been the focus of many previous research studies. Many object detection methods ranging from traditional to deep learning approaches have been proposed. However, majority of them are computationally intensive and have accuracy problems. The huge volume of the remote sensing data also brings a challenge for real time object detection. To mitigate this problem a high performance computing (HPC) method has been proposed to accelerate SAR imagery analysis, utilizing the GPU based computing methods. In this paper, we propose an enhanced GPU based deep learning method to detect ship from the SAR images. The You Only Look Once version 2 (YOLOv2) deep learning framework is proposed to model the architecture and training the model. YOLOv2 is a state-of-the-art real-time object detection system, which outperforms Faster Region-Based Convolutional Network (Faster R-CNN) and Single Shot Multibox Detector (SSD) methods. Additionally, in order to reduce computational time with relatively competitive detection accuracy, we develop a new architecture with less number of layers called YOLOv2-reduced. In the experiment, we use two types of datasets: A SAR ship detection dataset (SSDD) dataset and a Diversified SAR Ship Detection Dataset (DSSDD). These two datasets were used for training and testing purposes. YOLOv2 test results showed an increase in accuracy of ship detection as well as a noticeable reduction in computational time compared to Faster R-CNN. From the experimental results, the proposed YOLOv2 architecture achieves an accuracy of 90.05% and 89.13% on the SSDD and DSSDD datasets respectively. The proposed YOLOv2-reduced architecture has a similarly competent detection performance as YOLOv2, but with less computational time on a NVIDIA TITAN X GPU. The experimental results shows that the deep learning can make a big leap forward in improving the performance of SAR image ship detection.

The echo signal in imaging simulation based on the point target model cannot be linked to practical scenes due to the model being a simple mathematical form, stating only the synthetic process and lacking the physical process based on electromagnetic theory. In this paper, the full-wave method is applied to include the electromagnetic effects in raw data generation, and then a refined omega-K algorithm is used to perform image focusing. According to the proposed method, the focused images not only demonstrate the difference under dielectric constant variation but also present the diversified interaction among the targets with the spacing change. In addition, the images are simulated in different observation modes and bandwidths to provide a satisfactory reference for the design of system parameters. The simulation results from the full-wave method also compare well with chamber experiments. The simulation of SAR imaging based on a full-wave method offers more complete recovery of scattering information and is useful in designing future novel SAR systems and in speckle reduction analysis.

It is common practice to use RGB or HIS color space to display the chromatic information for polarization-encoded, Pauli-basis images, or model-based target decomposition of PolSAR images. However, to represent the chroma for multi-polarization SAR data, the region of basic RGB color space does not fully cover the human perceptual system, leading to information loss. In this paper, we propose a color-encoding framework based on the CIE-Lab, a perceptually uniform color space, aiming at a better visual perception and information exploration. The effective interpretability in increasing chromatic, and thus visual enhancement, is presented using extensive datasets. In particular, the four decomposed components—volume scattering, surface scattering, double bounce, and helix scattering—along with total return power, are simultaneously mapped into the color space to improve the discernibility among the scattering components. The five channels derived from the four-component decomposition method can be simultaneously mapped to CIE-Lab color space intuitively. Results show that the proposed color enhancement not only preserves the color tone of the polarization signatures, but also magnifies the target information embedded in the total returned power.

To explore the effects of 1950 MHz RF electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on mouse Leydig (TM3) cells. TM3 cells were irradiated or sham-irradiated continuously for 24 h by the specific absorption rate (SAR) 3 W/kg radiation. At 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days after irradiation, cell proliferation was detected by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) method, cell cycle distribution, percentage of apoptosis, and cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) were examined by flow cytometry, Testosterone level was measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) assay, messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression level of steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) and P450scc in TM3 cells was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). After being irradiated for 24 h, cell proliferation obviously decreased and cell cycle distribution, secretion capacity of Testosterone, and P450scc mRNA level were reduced. While cell apoptosis, ROS, and StAR mRNA level did not change significantly. The current results indicated that 24 h of exposure at 1950 MHz 3 W/kg radiation could cause some adverse effects on TM3 cells proliferation and Testosterone secretion, further studies about the biological effects in the reproductive system that are induced by RF radiation are also needed.

    Description: This study proposed a new approach to measure the similarity between spectra to discriminate materials and evaluate the performance of parameter-selection procedures. Many pure pixel vector-based similarity measurements have been developed in the past to calculate the distance between two pixel vectors. However, those methods may not be effective since they do not take full advantage of the spectral correlation. In this study, we adopt Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) to decompose the spectrum into serial components and employ these components to improve the performance of spectral discrimination. Performance evaluation was conducted with several commonly used measurements, and the spectral samples used for experimentation were provided by the spectral library of United States Geological Survey (USGS). The experimental results have demonstrated that EEMD can extract the spectral features more effectively than common spectral similarity measurements, and it better characterizes spectral properties. Our experimental results also suggest general rules for selecting noise standard deviation, the number of iterations for EEMD and the collection of Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) for classification. Finally, since EEMD is a time-consuming algorithm, we also implement parallel processing with a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to increase the processing speed.
