    Notes: We report pressure (0–28 kbar) and temperature (1.1–4.3 K) dependent photon echo results for tetra-tert-butyl-terrylene (TBT) in a polyisobutylene (PIB) host. Increased pressure is found to increase the homogeneous dephasing rate over the temperature range of this study, in contrast to pressure dependent hole burning results reported for other polymer systems at somewhat higher temperatures (≥4.2 K). A relatively small pressure increase (0 to 9 kbar) resulted in a change in the temperature dependence of the dephasing characterized by a lowering of the temperature power law exponent from ∼1.3 to ∼0.9. Further pressure increase above 9 kbar was characterized by an additional increase in the homogeneous dephasing rate without further change in the temperature exponent. The results are compared to high pressure photon echo studies of other polymer systems, and discussed in terms of the TLS (two-level-systems) model. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Impulsive stimulated scattering (ISS) is used to obtain the orientational dependence of the velocity of surface acoustic waves (SAW) on single crystal metal and semiconductor surfaces. Mechanically polished surfaces of aluminum(111), nickel(100), and germanium(100) samples were examined, as well as a comparison of mechanically polished versus high vacuum sputtering/annealing of a Ni(100) surface. The ISS technique offers an accurate and robust method of obtaining surface acoustic velocities of metal and semiconductor crystalline surfaces without physical contact. The orientationally dependent ISS results on Ni(100) are compared with recent classical Brillouin scattering measurements, and with velocities calculated using bulk elastic constant data. Finally, ISS measurements on tilted (i.e., lower symmetry surfaces) reveal coupling of the ISS excited SAW with bulk transverse modes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The structure of a budding cell of the pathogenic yeast Exophiala dermatitidis was observed in three dimensions after freeze-substitution, serial ultrathin sectioning and computer reconstruction. The nucleus occupied about 10% of the cell volume. The spindle pole body was composed of two disk elements connected by an intervening midpiece, and occupied about 0.01% of the cell volume. The cell wall consisted of an inner transparent layer, a middle electron-opaque layer, and an outer fibrous layer. The mitochondria occupied about 10% of the cell volume. There were numerous mitochondria in the mother cell and the bud, but no ‘giant mitochondrion’ was seen. The ratio of mitochondrial volume within the bud to the mitochondrial volume of the cell was close to the ratio of bud:cell cytoplasmic volume. The results emphasize the importance of good cryofixation for ‘perfect’ preservation of yeast cell structure.

    Notes: The ultrastructure of hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) particles produced by recombinant yeast cells was examined using high-resolution negative staining, and ice embedding, electron microscopy. With negative staining, the HBsAg particles were spherical to slightly ovoid with a mean diameter of 27.5 nm and consisted of many subunits each 4 nm in diameter. Subunits were marked with a minute central pore. With ice embedding, particles were mostly spherical to ovoid, with a mean diameter of 23.7 nm and a 7–8 nm thick cortex surrounding an electron translucent core. Human HBsAg particles, examined using the same methods, were smaller, apparently because of molecular differences in polypeptide structure.

    Notes: Abstract Reef-building corals have been extensively degraded by Acanthaster planci infestations which have continued to spread throughout the Ryukyu archipelago since 1969. Intensive control efforts were undertaken by fishermen and divers by hand-collecting and disposal on land with removal of about 13 million starfish at the total cost of over 600 million yen from 1970 to 1983 fiscal year. The control programs were mostly unsuccessful for saving the reefs from predation because the efforts were executed on the basis of collecting efficiency, so that significant numbers of starfish continued predation after each belated campaign. Certain coral assemblages outside the Ryukyus were infested with unusually large numbers of A. planci simultaneously with the northern part of Okinawa Island and its neighboring islands in the early seventies. A shift of infestation sites occurred in the extratropical waters in the mid-seventies when the warm current, Kuroshio, changed its path and left the coast of Honshu, the main island of Japan. The Kuroshio is considered to be transporting larval A. planci downstream from the Ryukyus where large aggregations have continued to exist at different areas all through the period.

    Notes: Summary The time interval over which growth rates are measured modifies the observed growth rates in non-linear growth curves. Growth rates obtained from a sigmoid curve such as the logistic growth equation may appear as if they were derived from the non-sigmoid von Bertalanffy growth equation when the small stage is not represented in the hypothetical growth observation. The inflection point of a sigmoid curve may be underestimated in noninstantaneous growth rate data when they are plotted on a graph against the initial sizes. This problem is significant for marine macro-benthos, whose growth is likely to be sigmoid and initiates mostly at microscopic sizes, when the popular von Bertalanffy growth equation is fitted to the observed growth rate data. Even when the von Bertalanffy growth equation appears to represent the observed growth rates adequately, extrapolation of the equation toward the smaller stage may require an independent investigation.

    Notes: Summary Derivatives of gramicidin S (GS) and its mono- and di-d-cyclohexylalanined-Cha) analogs possessing various protecting groups on Orn side chains were prepared.1H NMR spectra of the unsymmetrically protected analogs [Orn(X)2, Orn(X′)2′,d-Cha4]GS were similar to the composites of the spectra of the symmetrical derivatives [Orn(X)2,2′,d-Cha4,4′]GS and [Orn(X′)2,2′]Gs, revealing the proximity of the protecting groups of NδH of Orn residues at the 2 and 2′ positions to the side chains ofd-Phe (ord-Cha) residues at the 4 and 4′ positions, respectively. The results indicated the presence of H-bonds between the N°H of Orn and the carbonyl ofd-Phe residues in the i→i+2 sense and not in i→i-3, which was also supported by the ROESY analysis. The substantially strong H-bonds can explain the observed resistance of the urethane NH of the Orn side chains in the GS derivatives to the N-methylation with CH3I−Ag2O in DMF.

    Notes: Single crystal mat (SCM) samples of polyethylene (PE) were prepared from dilute solution of p-xylen, then they were annealed at pressures of 200 and 500 MPa. Lamellar thickness of the original and annealed SCM samples was measured by small-angle X-ray scattering method. Orientation of the molecular chain in those SCM samples was investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction pattern. From these X-ray measurements, annealing temperature dependence of the lamellar thickness, i.e., lamellar thickening, under high pressure was obtained. Melting process of the SCM samples was also investigated at 200 and 500 MPa by high pressure differential thermal analysis. Then correspondence between the lamellar thickening and the melting process was studied. The lamellar thickness increases markedly with approaching to the melting temperature of the orthorhombic crystal even in the high pressure region where the high pressure phase (hexagonal phase) appears. The annealing temperature dependence curve of the lamellar thickness at 200 MPa can be superimposed on the curve at 500 MPa by shifting the curve along the temperature scale by 47 K. Large scale lamellar thickening occurs in the orthorhombic crystal phase in the high pressure region. The formation process of extended-chain crystal is discussed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
