Notes: Abstract An active phase-shifting interferometer using current modulation of a laser diode is proposed. Fringe movement in the instrument is detected by a spatial filtering detector whose output is fed back to the injection current of the laser diode to lock the fringes and shift them correctly for phase shifting analysis. Frequency modulation characteristics of the laser diode and frequency response of the feedback system are first investigated. We constructed a portable interferometer head set apart from a mirror under test then measured the shape of a spherical mirror 130 mm in diameter, which was placed on a wooden table subject to vibration. Measurement repeatability of λ/35 was achieved.

Notes: Abstract A method for analyzing the fringe patterns obtained from a wavelength-scanning interferometer is proposed. It is based on phase retrieval with the phase-shifting method and derivation of its slope along the wave number axis. The accuracy and the error sources are estimated by experiments, in which a laser diode under small wavelength-modulation (-95pm) is used as the light source. A conventional piezoelectric phase shifter was used for a phase shifter. This technique can be applied to profile measurement of stepped objects located across the zero-path position.

Notes: Abstract We calculate the scattered local field around a small gold sphere on dielectric substrates which is illuminated by a collimated monochromatic beam. The numerical results show the field between the sphere and the substrate is much enhanced when the sphere is illuminated by a p-polarized beam. The enhanced area is very localized between the sphere and the substrate and the diameter of the enhanced area on the surface of the substrate is one fifth of the sphere diameter. The field increases as the gap distance decreases or as the refractive index of the substrate increases.

Notes: Abstract We propose an optical waveguide sensor using a leaky mode for absorption measurement of liquid samples. This sensor uses a single coupling prism. A cladding layer and a waveguide layer are directly deposited on the reflecting surface of the prism. The intensity of the internally reflected beam at an appropriate incident angle is very sensitive to the imaginary part of the sample attached to the surface of the waveguide layer. The sensitivity of this sensor is controlled by the thicknesses of both cladding and waveguide layers. We studied the performance of the sensor by numerical calculation.

Notes: Abstract An optical waveguide sensor structure, i.e. a coupling-wave structure, is presented and analyzed on the basis of a codirectional coupler. Potential uses for absorption-and fluorescence based sensors are theoretically explained by the group index method (D.-K. Qing, X-.M-. Chen, K. Itoh, M. Murabayashi: J. Lightwave Technol. 14 (1996) 1907). Refractive-index-based sensors were also analyzed. An actual coupling-wave structure was realized by combining the ion-exchange and the sol-gel methods. The coupling-wave structure that provides effective sensing interaction is easy to fabricate and can be used to realize optical waveguide chemical or biological sensors.

Notes: Abstract A fringe locking phenomenon in a two beam interferometer using a semiconductor laser subject to optical feedback was, whose injection current is modulated. When a path difference of the interferometer is sufficient, fringes taken by a charge coupled device camera are seen to be stationary and the rms fluctuations of fringe phase is reduced to as low as 0.2ϖ radians from more than 8ϖ radians without the optical feedback. The rms phase fluctuation is independent of frequency and amplitude of the current modulation. The fringe locking has also been observed in the presence of both injection current modulation and piezoelectric transducer mirror vibration.

Notes: Abstract We have found that the fringes in a laser diode interferometer can be locked even in the presence of mirror vibration and injection current modulation. A theoretical analysis explains the fringe locking phenomenon. The dependence of wavelength change on both PZT (piezoelectric transducer) mirror vibration and the injection current variation are calculated using a model of coupled resonators consisting of the laser cavity and the interferometer. The fringe phase change caused by the vibration and modulation of the current is derived from this model, and was proven to be suppressed within much less than 2ϖ in excess of an integer multiple of 2ϖ.

Notes: Abstract We propose a simple optical approach for the convolutional pre-processing of stellar specklegrams in the shift-and-add (SAA) method. It uses an incoherent optical processing, where a speckle pattern on a displaying device is re-imaged and a point-spread-function of the re-imaging system is used as the convolution kernel. This approach is suitable for use in the real-time SAA-system recently proposed. Experimental results using observational stellar specklegrams displayed on a cathode-ray-tube-monitor are reported to demonstrate that the optical pre-processing improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the final image.

Notes: Abstract Tapping mode atomic force microscopy is used to control the tip-sample distance in near field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM), which gives both topographic and near-field images simultaneously. The evanescent waves are scattered by a vibrating silicon-nitride tip in the proximity of sample surfaces and are detected through a microscope objective. This NSOM allows the observation of opaque samples with reflection illumination. A glass grating of 1-μm pitch and an InP grating of 0.5-μm pitch are observed with a lateral resolution of 100 nm.
