    Beschreibung: Samples from 15 holes at nine sites in the Izu-Bonin-Mariana region were examined for calcareous nannofossils, foraminifers, diatoms, and radiolarians. The ages of the containing sediments range from middle Eocene to Holocene. Biostratigraphic indicators date the sediments flanking Conical Seamount in the Mariana forearc as Pleistocene, whereas sediments flanking a seamount at Site 784 in the Izu-Bonin forearc were dated as middle Miocene. Sediments in the Izu-Bonin forearc are as old as the middle Eocene. Useful magnetostratigraphic results range from Holocene to mid-Miocene. Nannofossils provided the most useful biostratigraphic framework, but were supplemented with satisfactory agreement by data from foraminifers, radiolarians, and diatoms. Evidence from the biostratigraphic framework shows the likely presence of a sedimentary hiatus in the early Miocene. The presence of a single short hiatus in the early Oligocene and two in the late Miocene and early Pliocene is suggested, but supporting evidence other than nannofossil data is sparse. Evidence from approximate age-depth plots shows that sediment accumulation varies from hole to hole. The fastest rates of sediment accumulation were found to be in the late Miocene to Holocene whereas the slowest rates are present in the middle Eocene to Oligocene. The increased sedimentation rates in the late Miocene to Holocene resulted from an increase in volcanogenic sediment content from an uncertain source.

    Beschreibung: During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 125, a thick sequence of middle Eocene to Pleistocene pelagic sediments, volcanogenic sediments, and predominantly extrusive volcanic rocks was recovered. Calcareous nannofossils were examined from 15 holes at nine sites, but Eocene to Miocene calcareous nannofossils were found only from Holes 782A, 784A, 786A, and 786B. In portions of Holes 786A and 786B, datable nannofossil oozes were found intercalated among volcanic flows. The nannofossil biostratigraphy of these holes indicates the presence of three well-defined hiatuses: within the lower Oligocene, between the upper Oligocene and middle Miocene, and between the middle and upper Miocene. An attempt was made to correlate the magnetochronological data with the first or last occurrences of the following species: Sphenolithus distentus, Reticulofenestra bisecta, Reticulofenestra reticulata, and Cyclicargolithus floridanus abisectus n. comb. The results indicate that the FO of Sphenolithus distentus can extend down to Zone CP16 (34.7 Ma), the LO of Reticulofenestra bisecta best defines the boundary between CP19a and CP19b (23.5 Ma), and the LO of Cyclicargolithus f. abisectus n. comb, can extend up to Subzone CN5a (12.5 Ma). No latest Oligocene Cyclicargolithus f. abisectus n. comb, acme was observed. Cyclicargolithus abisectus is considered a subspecies or variant of Cyclicargolithus floridanus because their LOs coincide. As a consequence of these observations, we have modified the definitions of Bukry's Subzones CP14a, CP14b, and CNla. Analyses of sediment-accumulation rates indicate that the rates increased gradually from the Eocene to Miocene. This is especially evident since the late Miocene in Hole 782A. In different parts of the Izu-Bonin forearc basin, however, the rate is not everywhere the same and appears to vary according to the import of volcanogenic materials.

    Beschreibung: Sites 1146 and 1148 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 184, in the South China Sea (SCS), comprise long sediment sections with a time span from the early Oligocene to the Pleistocene. Calcareous nannofossils from these two sites were biostratigraphically studied. We recognized 53 early Oligocene to Pleistocene events that are commonly found in open sea areas and can therefore be correlated within a large geographic range. This study also revealed that a few conventionally used nannofossil events are not suitable for the SCS, and further evaluation is needed. The lower Oligocene to Pleistocene sequences recovered at Sites 1146 and 1148 were subdivided into the 4 Paleogene zones and 21 Neogene to Quaternary zones of Martini, in correlation with the Paleogene to Quaternary zones of Okada and Bukry. This provided a lower Oligocene through Pleistocene nannofossil biostratigraphic framework. A significant unconformity was recognized in the Oligocene-Miocene transition, in which the upper part of Oligocene Zone NP25 and lower part of Miocene Zone NN1 were missing. The time span of the unconformity was estimated to be ~1 m.y. Very high sedimentation rates were seen in the Oligocene, relative low values were seen in the Miocene, and the highest values were seen in the Pleistocene, which was believed to be the result of tectonic and sedimentation history of the SCS.
