    Description: Seventeen coupled general circulation models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) are analyzed to assess the dynamics and variability of the North Pacific Subtropical Countercurrent (STCC). Consistent with observations, the STCC is anchored by mode water to the north. For the present climate, the STCC tends to be stronger in models than in observations because of too strong a low potential vorticity signature of mode water. There are significant variations in mode water simulation among models, i.e., in volume and core layer density. The northeast slanted bands of sea surface height (SSH) anomalies associated with the STCC variability are caused by variability in mode water among models and the Hawaii islands are represented in some models, where the island-induced wind curls drive the Hawaiian Lee Countercurrent (HLCC) located to the south of STCC. Projected future changes in STCC and mode water under the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 scenario are also investigated. By combining the historical and RCP 4.5 runs, an empirical orthogonal function analysis for SSH over the central subtropical gyre (160°E–140°W, 15°–30°N) is performed. The dominant mode of SSH change in 17 CMIP5 models is characterized by the weakening of the STCC because of the reduced formation of mode water. The weakened mode water is closely related to the increased stratification of the upper ocean, the latter being one of the most robust changes as climate warms. Thus the weakened STCC and mode water are common to CMIP5 future climate projections.

    Description: Mesoscale eddy effects on the subduction of North Pacific mode waters are investigated by comparing observations and ocean general circulation models where eddies are either parameterized or resolved. The eddy resolving models produce results closer to observations than the non-eddy resolving model. There are large discrepancies in subduction patterns between eddy resolving and non-eddy resolving models. In the non-eddy resolving model, subduction on a given isopycnal is limited to the cross point between the mixed layer depth (MLD) front and the outcrop line whereas in eddy resolving models and observations, subduction takes place in a broader, zonally elongated band within the deep mixed layer region. Mesoscale eddies significantly enhance the total subduction rate, helping create remarkable peaks in the volume histogram that correspond to North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW) and central mode water (CMW). Eddy-enhanced subduction preferentially occurs south of the winter mean outcrop. With an anticyclonic eddy to the west and a cyclonic eddy to the east, the outcrop line meanders south, and the thermocline/MLD shoals eastward. As eddies propagate westward, the MLD shoals, shielding the water of low potential vorticity from the atmosphere. The southward eddy flow then carries the subducted water mass into the thermocline. The eddy subduction processes revealed here have important implications for designing field observations and improving models.

With its spatial structure in accordance with the Chinese ancient strategist Zhuge Liang’s art of war “the Diagram of the Eight-Sided Battle Formation” and in line with the terrain of natural landscape, Zhuge Village, the settlement of Zhuge Liang’s descendants in middle Zhejiang Province, has formed a landscape model featuring cultural characteristics. Using literature research, field research, schema cognition and analysis method, this paper investigates and analyzes aspects such as the siting of settlement, spatial layout, landscape images, ritual activities, and landscape changes so as to explore the concepts from ancient art of war to spatial design as well as analyze its landscape forms and the construction of its landscape model. The paper aims to reveal how the designer of Zhuge Village transformed the spatial deployment of the battle formation in the ancient art of war into the spatial landscape model of “living and working in peace and contentment”. In addition, this paper intends to explore the cultural landscape model of the traditional settlement on the basis of Chinese traditional cultural symbol, “the Eight Trigrams”, in hope that it will provide some inspiration for urban public landscape design in China.

    Description: In the modernization process since China’s reform and liberalization, urban and village space design is reflected in the characteristics of Western cultures. The idea of Western space design has a profound influence on China, but the piecemeal individuation of art design, the disorderly public art modeling and concept, not only interferes with the aesthetic sense of urban and village public space itself, but also seriously affected the landscape order of public space. In fact, Chinese traditional settlement landscape excels in abundant landscape design and spatial sequence. This paper, using the methods of literature discussion, field research and spatial analysis, takes the typical traditional landscape settlement “Xinye Village” (新葉村) in the south of the Yangtze River as an example, and explores its public landscape order as a whole, and finds its spatial structure based on the “Five Elements and Nine Divisions (五行九宮)” cultural schemata. In the process of development, it has experienced the competition of public space, thus forming a stable and sustainable spatial order form. The purpose is to explore the cultural schema of the public landscape from the traditional Chinese settlement, and to put forward the possibility of “constructing the public landscape order based on culture” in future urban and village landscape design.

    Description: The persistence effect contribution of legacy nutrients is often cited as a reason for little or no improvement in water quality following extensive implementation of watershed nutrient mitigation actions, yet there is limited knowledge concerning factors influencing this response, often called the “persistence effect”. Here, we adopted detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and Spearman analysis methods to assess the influence of land use on the watershed phosphorus (P) persistence effect, using monthly water quality records during 2010–2016 in 13 catchments within a drinking water reservoir watershed in eastern China. DFA was used to calculate the Hurst exponent α to assess watershed legacy P characteristics ( α ≈ 0.5, α 〉 0.5 and α 〈 0.5 indicate white noise, persistence and anti-persistence, respectively). Results showed weak to strong P persistence (0.60–0.81) in the time series of riverine P in the 13 catchments. The Hurst exponent α had negative relationships with agricultural land ( R =-0.47, P =0.11) and developed land ( R =-0.67, P =0.01), and a positive relationship with forest land cover ( R =0.48, P =0.10). The persistence effect of riverine P was mainly determined by retention ability (biogeochemical legacy) and migration efficiency (hydrological legacy). A catchment with strong retention capacity (e.g., biomass uptake/storage, soil PO 4 sorption) and low migration efficiency results in a stronger persistence effect for riverine P. In practice, source control is more effective in catchments with weak persistence, while sink control (e.g., riparian buffers, wetlands) is preferred in catchments with strong persistence effects.

    Description: Eddy-bathymetry interactions are common in the ocean but the full evolution of the interaction is difficult to observe below the surface. Using 17 Iridium Argo floats, we continually track two anticyclonic eddies (AEs) in the North Pacific that migrate westward and encounter the Izu-Ogasawara Ridge. Based on over 5,000 Argo profiles following the two AEs, this study presents the first detailed descriptions of changes in eddy vertical structure and diapycnal mixing as the two AEs pass the Ridge. There, we find that isopycnals dome up and the eddy diameter increases, while the diapycnal mixing is enhanced — to the order of 10 -4 m 2 s -1 or larger, in comparison with an ambient of 10 -5 m 2 s -1 . The enhanced mixing around the AE center in the upper -1,000 m appears where the underlying bathymetry is shallower than -4,000 m, and is mainly sustained by tidally generated internal waves.
