    Description: Seasonal changes in the diel feeding patterns of the zooplanktivorous icefish (Neosalanx taihuensis), which is an endemic species of China, were studied in the large, shallow eutrophic Lake Chaohu of China during the autumn of 2002 and summer of 2003. The results of the diel feeding rhythm indicate that icefish is a visual particulate feeder. There were large differences in diet composition and the selection indices of certain prey by icefish. In general, icefish fed more on calanoids than on cyclopoids, and fed more on larger cladocerans (i.e., Daphnia, Moina, Leptodora) than smaller cladocerans (i.e., Bosmina, Ceriodaphnia). Icefish is highly selective of individual food items, with prey selection also being dependent on fish size. There was no significant difference in the prey selection between male and female icefish. This study provides the first report of diel feeding rhythm in icefish, and is the first comparative study on prey selection between male and female icefish.

    Notes: We report a new Er3+:LiYF4 cryogenic upconversion laser pumped by a fourfold upconversion process. Excitation at 1.5 μm results in laser emission at 701.5 nm on a transition with an upper state at nearly four times the pump photon energy.     Notes: Abstract The protozoan fauna and species richness in the pelagic zone of 15 Japanese lakes were investigated in 1996 using polyurethane foam (PF) substrates. The most common species were flagellates, such as Cryptomonas erosa, Oikomonas termo, and Pleuromonas jaculans. Cinetochilum margaritaceum and Actinophrys sol were the most common species of the Ciliata and Sarcodina, respectively. The similarity of species occurrence was calculated from presence/absence data, but this revealed no clear trend with respect to the influence of lake properties such as trophic state, surface area, or mean depth. The occurrence pattern of Protozoa was most similar in L. Chuzenji and L. Biwa (north basin), two oligomesotrophic natural lakes. Log species richness was positively correlated with log total phosphorus (r = 0.54, P 〈 0.05) and negatively with log mean depth (r = −0.58, P 〈 0.05). The diversity index (Margalef's formula), highly correlated with the total species number (r = 0.85, P 〈 0.01), was negatively correlated with log lake area (r = −0.71, P 〈 0.01). The logarithm of Phytomastigophora number was positively correlated with log total nitrogen (r = 0.53, P 〈 0.05), and the logarithm of Ciliata number was negatively correlated with log lake area (r = −0.55, P 〈 0.05). The species richness of Protozoa on PF substrates was determined by both the nutrient status of the lake and the distance from the location of the suspended PF substrate to the lake bottom or shore.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we propose a new protocol forintegrated voice/data traffic in personal communicationnetworks (PCNs) employing slotted packet code divisionmultiple access (CDMA). The concept of dynamic boundary is adopted in both code and timedomains to meet the different requirements for data andvoice traffic. This paper outlines and compares theperformance of three channel assignment policies. The network performance is measured in terms of theaverage voice blocking probability and average datadelay. A discrete-event simulation and a two-dimensionalMarkov model are developed for both the fixed boundary scheme and dynamic boundary scheme.The results indicate that an improved performance can beachieved by introducing the dynamic boundary scheme, andthe dynamic assignment policy results in a performance close to the optimal value. It isalso easier to be implemented.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, a joint CDMA/TDMA protocol has been proposed for integratedvideo-phone/voice/data traffic in personal communication networks (PCN). Thevideophone service is implemented according to H.261 standard. The concept ofdynamic boundary is adopted in both code and time domains to meet thedifferent requirements for videophone, voice and data traffic.Two mathematical analysis methods are adopted to evaluate the systemperformance. One is the traditional Markov analysis (TDMA), which is used tocalculate the average videophone and voice call blocking probabilities. Theother is Transient Fluid Analysis (TFA), which is adopted to evaluate the datadelay and channel utilization performance. Results show that two dynamicboundaries can be adjusted to achieve the optimal system performance, andsuggestions of how to adjust these boundaries are also given.
