Notes: Recently reported measurements of the ground state splitting of atomic rhenium in a krypton matrix by the observation of MCD saturation phenomena are considered. It is shown that the suggestion that this splitting comes from the admixing, via the spin–orbit interaction, of some 4P5/2 character into the 6S5/2 ground state cannot lead to a ground state splitting and higher order mechanisms must be invoked. The special properties of half-filled shells are considered and the splitting mechanism outlined. Detailed calculations show the significance of configuration interaction.

Notes: The resolution of all possible antisymmetrically symmetrized powers of the fundamental irrep (27) is given. This reduces the problem of plethysms of the fundamental irrep to the evaluation of ordinary Kronecker products of E6 irreps.

Notes: Properties of shifted tableaux have been explored in order to improve the algorithm for the calculation of Q function outer products. A simple technique has been established for finding out the highest and lowest partitions in the expansion of Q function outer products. Using these techniques and Young's raising operators, we have completed the Kronecker product for Sn spin irreps.

Notes: Chinook salmon smolt in fresh water fed a commercial diet known to produce minimal gastric dilation and air sacculitis (GDAS) were randomly assigned to four experimental tanks with flow-through sea water. All four groups were acclimatized to sea water for 3 weeks and fed a diet of minced fresh seafood. After 3 weeks the groups were fed either; seafood as before, a different commercial pelleted diet associated with the development of GDAS on farms, or either diet supplemented with 500 mg L−1 putrescine, 300 mg L−1 cadaverine and 250 mg L−1 tyramine. Gastric dilation was produced in fish fed the commercial diet for 1 month but not by feeding a diet of minced seafood. The addition of putrescine, cadaverine and tyramine to either diet had no significant effect on the development of gastric dilation. Fish fed the commercial diet had significantly (P 〈 0.0001) wider weight-adjusted stomach widths, less prominent longitudinal stomach folds (P 〈 0.0001) and lower (P 〈 0.0001) stomach-width ratios than fish fed the fresh seafood diet. There was no significant difference in serum osmolality or sodium concentration between fish from groups with or without gastric dilation or fed biogenic amines.

Notes: A syndrome affecting cultured chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), characterized by distended abdomens, gastric dilation, air sacculitis (GDAS), increased feed conversion rates and increased mortality has been recognized in New Zealand. Affected fish were most obvious in sea cages but were also present in fresh water. Mortality rates associated with this condition were highest in late summer and approached 6% per month. A dilated and flaccid stomach, without visible rugal folds containing copious oil, watery fluid or undigested feed was typical. Gastric mucosal ulceration or inflammation were not present. The air sacculitis consisted of a thickened, dilated bladder with a mixed mucosal inflammatory infiltrate and a luminal exudate associated with large numbers of morphologically diverse bacteria. Gastric dilation or air sacculitis occurred alone or together in the same fish. In a group of 20 subclinically affected fish with or without gastric dilation, there were no significant differences in weight, length, serum osmolality, sodium, total protein or packed cell volume. Twenty-three severely affected fish had significantly (P 〈 0.05) higher serum osmolality but similar sodium and total protein to that of clinically normal fish.

Notes: The embedding of the dynamical algebra U(M/N) of nuclear supersymmetries in larger algebraic structures is studied. A noncompact Z2⊕Z2 graded color superalgebra SpO(2M/1/2N/0) is identified as a receptacle for various chains containing boson and fermion (super) algebras. The existence of a generalized quasispin algebra is demonstrated and discussed.

Notes: The notion of the connectivity class of minimal words in the algebra Hn(q) is introduced and a method of explicitly constructing irreducible representation matrices is described and implemented. Guided by these results, the connection between the Ocneanu trace on Hn(q) and Schur functions is exploited to derive a very simple prescription for calculating the irreducible characters of Hn(q). They appear as the elements of the transition matrix relating certain generalized power sum symmetric functions to Schur functions. Their evaluation involves the use of the Littlewood–Richardson rule, which is proved to apply to Hn(q) just as it does to Sn. Both representation matrices and characters are tabulated.

Notes: The extension of the interacting Boson model of (IBM) nuclei to sdgi bosons leads naturally to the group structure U28→SU3→SO3. There exist alternative group structures involving the exceptional Lie groups G2 and E6, namely, U28→SU7→SO7→G2→SO3 and U28→SU27×U1→E6→G2→SO3. This represents a different use of G2 to that used in the atomic and nuclear spectroscopy of the f shell. In this paper, details of the explicit construction of the group generators, the calculation of the relevant isoscalar factors, and branching rules will be shown and specific application to the nuclear levels of the A=200 isotope of Hg will be made. The analysis of the foregoing example encourages the more general application of these group structures.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR — This has been a remarkable season for athletic track events. Already the 100-metre world record has been broken by 0.01 s while the 10,000-metre world record is now 26 min 52.23 s. Presumably a runner who completes the 10,000 metres in 26 min 52.22 s will be judged to be the new world ...

Notes: Abstract The problem of finding irreducible representations of a simple Lie group that decompose into just pure replications of a representation of a subgroup is considered. Replications involving tensor representations of the orthogonal groups are studied in detail using counting groups whose representation dimensions correspond to branching multiplicities. Replications involving spinor and mixed tensor representations are briefly considered.
