Bei der Acetylierung der 3-Desoxy-D-galaktose mit Acetanhydrid in Gegenwart von Pyridin, Zinkchlorid oder Natriumacetat entstehen im Gemisch Tetra-O-acetate der α- und β-Pyranose sowie der α- und β-Furanose. Die beiden ersteren können durch Kristallisation als reine Verbindungen isoliert werden. Ihre Strukturen lassen sich durch Überführen in das bekannte Methyl-3-desoxy-α-D-galaktopyranosid beweisen, als Zwischenprodukte treten dabei Acetochlor-3-desoxy-α-D-galaktopyranose und Methyl-tri-O-acetyl-3-desoxy-α-D-galaktopyranosid auf. Analog werden aus Tetra-O-acetyl-3-desoxy-α,β-D-galaktofuranose Acetochlor-3-desoxy-α-D-galaktofuranose und Methyl-tri-O-acetyl-3-desoxy-β-D-galaktofuranosid gewonnen.
