Notes: Abstract  The dispersal of an ash plume as it propagates downwind with the ash settling under gravity is presented. It is shown that wind shear, the initial plume height and the plume grain size distribution have an important role in the dispersal of the ash, in particular in determining the evolution of the upper surface and the leading edge of the ash cloud. Once the ash has thermally equilibrated with the atmosphere, the temperature of the upper surface of the ash plume is directly related to its altitude. As a result we can use the model to interpret satellite images of the temperature of the upper surface of ash plumes. These calculations are compared with new analyses of satellite data from the 18 May 1980 eruptions of Mount St Helens in which both thermal infra-red and visible GOES satellite data were examined. In accord with the data, the model is able to predict the rate at which the Mount St Helens ash plume propagated downwind through a combination of the wind shear and gravitational settling of different size particles. The model is also able to explain the observed thermal structure of the upper surface of the ash plume, in which the temperature initially decreases, but then increases with downwind distance as the ash falls through the tropopause.

Notes: Abstract In this review, we describe the dynamics and thermodynamics of liquid and vapor flow through hot fractured rock. Such flows occur in geothermal reservoirs and have important implications for geothermal power generation; we describe both forced flows associated with liquid injection into such systems, and natural convective flows associated with the vertical heat transfer through such systems. First we focus on permeable media and describe the heat transfer of single-phase liquid or vapor flow through a medium of different temperature. Then we consider the dynamics and thermodynamics of a liquid front as it advances into a superheated region and boils. The morphological stability of such an interface is discussed, and we describe conditions under which the interface breaks down to form a two-phase zone between the liquid and vapor. We next examine the heat transfer and boiling in gravity-driven flows advancing through a superheated permeable rock, identifying that at large times such currents asymptote to a family of similarity solutions. In the second part of the review, we describe the analogous heat transfer and boiling processes associated with liquid flow along a fracture embedded in an impermeable rock. We describe some simple asymptotic solutions for the temperature distribution in the bounding rock, which reveal that in the fracture, a two-phase boiling region develops between the purely liquid and purely vapor zones. Model predictions are successfully tested with laboratory experiments. In the final section of the review, we briefly discuss natural convective flows, illustrating how single-phase and two-phase convective regions interact and in some cases produce instability.

Notes: The different modes of convection that can arise when a solid of one pure phase melts into a binary fluid are described. These depend upon the relative density of the molten solid and the binary fluid and upon whether the solid lies above or beneath the liquid. The case in which compositionally buoyant melt rises and mixes into an overlying denser liquid is studied. A global model describing the conservation of mass, concentration and enthalpy during the melting is presented. This is successfully compared with a number of new laboratory experiments. The model is extended to include the formation of crystals in the liquid as it cools. This suggests a simple estimate of the maximum amount of crustal melt produced when a hot, molten magma intrudes and melts the floor of a magma chamber in the continental crust.

Notes: [Auszug] The classical Plinian eruption column is formed when very hot, dense material is ejected upwards from the volcanic vent at high speed (-300 m s"1)4'14'16. This column entrains ambient air, which rapidly heats up and expands; the resulting buoyant plume may then rise tens of kilometres into the ...

Notes: [Auszug] The crystallization of a liquid mixture in the presence of natural convection is an important problem in geophysics and metallurgy. Simple aqueous solutions may be used as analogue systems to study this process. Both theory and experiment reveal that convective motions in the fluid are important in ...

Notes: [Auszug] SlR - One of the most important effects of the eruption of Mount St Helens on 18 May 1980 was the blowdown of large trees by the lateral blast of hot volcanic ash and gas. Many of the large trees fell in the direction of this flow. During a recent visit to the blowdown area, we ...
