    Notes: In order to investigate the effect of the solvent on nonresonant (VV) processes, rate constants have been measured for the deactivation of N2(v=1) and CO(v=1) in liquid N2/Ar mixtures at 85 K. The systems studied are relaxation of 14N2, 12C16O, and 13C16O by both O2 and CH4. Measurements were taken in liquid Ar, liquid N2, and in solvent mixtures. The rate constants in liquid Ar solution equal those in the gas phase at the same temperature. The rate constants fall nonlinearly with the addition of N2 to the solvent. The decrease on changing the solvent from liquid Ar to liquid N2 is 30% for the deactivation of N2(v=1) and 10% for CO(v=1). These results would not be predicted by current formulations of the isolated binary collision (IBC) hypothesis and suggest that one or more N2 molecules in the shell of solvent molecule surrounding vibrationally excited N2 or CO perturb the energy transfer process. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Rate constants are presented for (VV) energy transfer between CO(ν=1) and CO2(0001) in the gas phase down to 115 K and in liquid Kr solution at 118 and 130 K. Four isotopically substituted systems were investigated for which the energy mismatches varied between 104 and 306 cm−1. The gas and liquid phase data show several systematic effects with changing energy mismatch. In particular it was found that the ratio of the liquid and gas phase rate constants at the same temperature, kL/kG, increased with decreasing energy mismatch. This is not predicted by current theories of liquid phase energy transfer and is in contrast to previous work using liquid Kr as the solvent. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The development and effects of nitrogen (N) deficiency in kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa ‘Hayward’) vines planted at three densities (25.0, 12.5 and 8.33 m2 vine−1) were examined in a long term (1982 to 1989) field experiment in which N was applied at rates from 0 to 200 kg N ha−1 year−1. The rate of applied N significantly affected leaf N concentrations every year from 1985 onwards, and the average leaf N concentrations declined throughout the experiment. Fruit N concentrations varied significantly with the level of applied N as early as 1986. The average fruit N concentrations varied strongly between years, and were inversely proportional to the fruit number (per m2), indicating that, after fruit set, growth of individual fruit was relatively insensitive to the vine N status. Effects of N supply on fruit yields resulted mostly from changes in fruit number (per m2). For vines planted at the high density, fruit yields responded significantly to the level of applied N each season from 1986 onwards. In any year, maximum fruit yields for vines planted at the high density were associated with leaf N concentrations (20 weeks after bud burst) of at least 1.8 mmol g−1. For vines planted at low density, significant yield responses to the level of applied N were not recorded until 1988, and maximum yields in that year were associated with leaf N concentrations of at least 1.4 mmol g−1. The delayed expression of effects of N deficiency on fruit yields for vines planted at low density appeared to follow a shift in partitioning of resources in favour of fruit growth. This shift in partitioning did not appear to be sustainable, and by 1989 the fruit yield response to applied N continued to the highest N level tested. In that year, the leaf N concentration associated with maximum yield was 1.8 mmol g−1, the same as that recorded throughout the experiment for the vines planted at high density. In the last two seasons of the experiment, leaf necrosis developed extensively on vines receiving less than the highest rate of N. This necrosis appeared to be premature senescence resulting from N deficiency. Leaf chloride (Cl) concentrations increased significantly with increasing severity of N deficiency, but were never more than those associated with Cl toxicity. While N supply significantly affected fruit firmness immediately post-harvest, there were no significant effects on fruit firmness after 12–20 weeks storage.

    Notes: Summary Mechanically skinned skeletal muscle fibres from the soleus and tibialis anterior muscles of the small marsupialSminthopsis macroura were activated by Ca2+ and Sr2+ so that their isometric force properties could be determined. The properties characterized were the shape, slope and positions of the curves generated by plotting isometric force vs. pCa (−log10[Ca2+]) and pSr (−log10[Sr2+]), the maximum Ca2+-activated and Sr2+-activated tension (Ncm−2) and the frequency of force oscillations of myofibrillar origin during submaximal activations. The effect of caffeine on force activation was also studied. Apart from the fibres which exhibited physiological characteristics similar to those observed previously in mammalian fibres, a large proportion of fibres exhibited characteristics or combinations of characteristics which have not previously been described from healthy adult mammals. The results from 32 soleus fibres showed that only 23 could be categorized as either typical fast-twitch or slow-twitch fibres. The rest possessed unusual physiological characteristics which suggested the co-existence in the same fibre of Ca2+-regulatory and contractile properties from different categories of fast-twitch and slow-twitch fibres. We could distinguish two major fast twitch populations of tibialis anterior fibres which occurred in similar proportions. There were significant differences in the maximum tension produced by some of these groups of fibres. The tibialis anterior population fibres produced the highest maximum tension (T o Ca 44.6±4.6 Ncm−2, n=7) while the soleus combined type fibres produced the lowest maximum tension (T o Ca 18.1±2.1 Ncm−2, n=8). Our physiological observations of the Ca2+-activation and Sr2+-activation properties of soleus fibres in this study provide new evidence that there can be combinations of characteristics in single fibres and a continuum of properties between fibre types in normal mammalian skeletal muscles. These animals can therefore be used as a source of fibres with a wide range of properties.

    Notes: Twenty-four rectangular metal plates were fabricated with surface regions in three different pore size ranges (5-20 μm, 20-50 μm, 50-200 μm). The plates were implanted into the dorsal subcutaneous tissue of 12 adult mongrel dogs for periods of 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks. After animal sacrifice, the fibrous tissue which adhered to the porous-surfaced regions of each plate was mechanically peeled off to give an indication of the strength of tissue attachment. The tissue was examined by both transmitted light and scanning electron microscopy. At each time period, the tissue that contacted the porous regions was found to be collagenized fibroconnective tissue. The mechanical tests indicated an increasing strength of tissue attachment with increasing implantation time and pore size range. The largest pore size range of approximately 50-200 μm produced a mean peel strength of attachment of 27.5 g/mm at the 16-week period.

    Notes: The finite element method is applied to the free transverse vibration of circular and annular plates of varying thickness. An annular element is derived which incorporates the number of diametral modes in the deflection function. This results in an element having only four degrees of freedom, these being the deflection and slopes at the inner and outer radii of the element at an anti-node of the particular vibration mode. Thickness variation in the radial direction is readily introduced, and stiffness and inertia matrices are presented for elements with linear and parabolic variations in thickness.The method is checked with several numerical examples. Calculations of free vibration of circular and annular plates of constant, linear and parabolic thickness variation are compared with available exact solutions.
