Notes: [Auszug] The antibiotic rifampicin inhibits the growth of poxviruses and adenovirus and can prevent the maturation of infectious virus until quite late in the growth cycle. Drug resistant mutants of vaccinia have been isolated and this suggests that the virus genome codes for a protein concerned with the ...

Notes: [Auszug] Experiments are reported here which suggest that the direct action of ionizing radiation produces structural changes such as the breakage of certain disulphide bonds, and molecular conformity changes so that 'latent' tyrosyl groups become easily ionizable. We have examined the radiosensitivity of ...

Notes: The two outgoing electrons from (e,2e) scattering processes are selected by two 180° electrostatic analyzers whose energy dispersed output spectra are detected by microchannel plates followed by resistive anodes. These detectors permit the identification of all multiple coincident events occurring within the dispersal width of the analyzers. It was found that the time difference between the two detectors for correlated events is strongly dependent on the energy of the incident electrons, which consequently causes the time coincidence window to move systematically. This behavior has been accounted for by a model that determines the time taken by an electron to go around a hemispherical analyzer. A description is given of a data collection system that can compensate for the shift in the coincidence spectra and that records all multiple coincidence events with an increase in the overall coincidence count rate of about two orders of magnitude relative to conventional non position sensitive detectors without position sensing. The performance of the system is shown for an (e,2e) spectrum of argon.

Notes: A data acquisition and display system has been developed for the study of electron impact ionization of atoms. Parallel data recording permits simultaneous but independent acquisition, analysis, and display of electron energy-loss spectra from two 180° electron energy spectrometers at single-detector count rates up to 100 kHz as well as their time coincidence spectra for coincidence rates of up to 1 kHz. The system has sufficient energy resolution to clearly observe the post-collision interaction energy shift of argon L23M23M23 Auger transition lines for low excess energy. It can acquire data at excess energies simultaneously from threshold to 30 eV for more than one transition, representing an improvement in experimental efficiency of at least an order of magnitude. Real-time data processing allows for faster experimental optimization and better statistical accuracy of accumulated data. Object-oriented programming in Windows with an IBM 486 computer was used. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The applications of liquid crystal variable retarders in the production of spin-polarized electrons and in the determination of the polarization of optical radiation from atoms excited by polarized electrons are discussed. The advantages of using liquid crystal variable retarders in the measurement of Stokes parameters are insensitivity to the incident photon direction, large transmission diameter, variable retardation over large wavelength range without mechanical movement, and in situ calibration. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A bakeable ultrahigh-vacuum valve, with a coarse screw thread and conical springs, eliminates slip common to differential thread valves and reduces the bakeout-induced compression and release of the valve disk. The straight-through valve isolates a polarized electron source from gas scattering regions and maintains precision electron optical paths using a right-angled insertable electron lens. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A four-dimensional histogramming data acquisition system has been developed for use on an 80386 IBM-compatible computer. The method has a large data storage capacity providing good experimental resolution and system flexibility. A custom-built analog-to-digital board generates a memory address in hardware from the incoming data which permit the use of a simple and elegant histogramming algorithm. The system is used to collect and analyze data from (e,2e) experiments. Results from coplanar symmetric (e,2e) experiments on argon, at an incident energy of 3 keV, are presented to demonstrate the performance of the instrument. The method is applicable to experiments where data from several sources have to be combined and then histogrammed in real time.

Notes: The characteristics and calibration of a microchannel-plate-based resistive-anode position-sensitive detector (PSD) are reported. Factors affecting the spatial uniformity of the fast rise-time timing signals and the position-dependent performance are discussed. When two such detectors are used for (e,2e) coincidence measurements, the detection efficiency of the PSDs must be uniform to within 5% for reliable quantitative comparisons of data acquired on different sections of the PSD. The relative efficiency in coincidence mode reflects the single detector efficiency uniformity. Such an apparatus was used to measure argon triple differential cross sections (TDCS) to determine the validity of the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) quantum scattering model. Relative to the argon 3s TDCS, the simultaneously acquired 3p TDCS is smaller than the DWBA prediction by a factor of 1.15±0.05. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
