Hydrogen sulfide is oxydized by selenium trioxide even under very mild conditions, but mercaptanes and SeO3 form thiolo-halfesters of thioselenic acid which are unstable at room temperature. SeO3 and diethyl sulfide give the adduct (C2H5)2S · SeO3 which reacts with pyridine forming C5H5N · SeO3. Chloroselenic acid reacts with H2S forming thioselenic acid which cannot be isolated in the pure state. Reaction with mercaptanes again leads to S-half-esters. The preparation of an O-halfester of thioselenic acid is possible by thiolysis of trimethylsiyl-chloroselenate.

Schwefelwasserstoff wird in Äther auch unter schonenden Bedingungen von Selentrioxid oxydiert. Dagegen erhält man aus Mercaptanen und SeO3 S-Alkyl- bzw. Arylhalbester der Thioselensäure, die bei Zimmertemperatur nicht beständig sind. Diäthylsulfid bildet ein Addukt (C2H5)2S · SeO3, das auf Pyridin selenonierend wirkt. Chloroselensäure liefert bei der Thiolyse freie Thioselensäure, allerdings nicht in reiner Form. Mit Mercaptanen entstehen daraus wieder S-Halbester. Durch Thiolyse von Trimethylsilylchloroselenat ist der O-Trimethysilylester der Thioselensäure darstellbar.
