Notes: In-plane effective masses m*(parallel) and quantum scattering times are derived from temperature-dependent Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations measured on a series of modulation-doped InxGa1−xAs/InP quantum wells with x=0.53 and 0.75, and for well widths ranging from 3 to 7 nm. The values for m*(parallel) are consistently higher by 30%–70% than the respective bulk data. This result is in good agreement with recent theoretical calculations which predict an increase of m*(parallel) with decreasing well width. The scatter of the mass values for nominally identical quantum wells is assumed to reflect corresponding variations of the well widths. The ratio of quantum to classical scattering times and the carrier density dependence of the electron mobilities indicate that Coulomb scattering is important even in extremely narrow quantum wells.

Notes: Abstract Thermogravimetry in controlled oxygen atmospheres and barometric measurements between 300 and 1200 K were performed on the YBa2Cu3O x superconducting phase. The complete reversibility of the exchange of a certain part of the oxygen, as found even at 250 °C, and the observed relationship between oxygen partial pressure, oxygen content and temperature, can be explained by the dissolution of oxygen in YBa2Cu3O x . It is concluded that samples with highx values (≈), as necessary for good superconducting properties, can be obtained at high temperatures only at high oxygen pressures, but they were obtained by annealing at normal pressure between 250 and 350 °C.

Notes: Abstract Melt textured NdBaCuO samples with Tc = 94 K and jc(0 T, 77 K) = 46 kA/cm2 have been prepared on an isothermal route. The thermodynamic background of this procedure which aims at the production of a Ba rich Nd-123 is pointed out.

Notes: The motion of nitroxide spin probes and spin labels in amorphous polymers is studied below the glass transition temperature with a two-dimensional pulsed electron double-resonance experiment. Polystyrene and a liquid crystalline side group polymer are studied using both spin probes and spin labels covalently bound to specific sites along the polymer chain. Two methyl acrylic polymers differing only in their side group structure and polyvinylacetate are compared and large differences in the molecular dynamics deduced from both the nuclear and the electron spin relaxation rates are observed as the glass transition is approached. The results demonstrate the complexity of small amplitude motion in simple polymers below the glass transition temperature and show that it is very sensitive to the packing in the polymer. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Dynamic mechanical, 2H NMR and dielectric spectroscopy techniques were used to identify the nature of the local motions involved in the secondary relaxations of a thermotropic aromatic terpolyester prepared from para-hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroquinone and isophthalic acid. Three secondary relaxations, denoted β, γ, and δ, were detected. A β relaxation, pointed out by dynamic mechanical measurements, is quite close to the large amplitude π-flip processes observed by 2H NMR. Correlated motions of the para-substituted rings and adjacent carbonyl groups may also participate in the β process. Then, at lower temperatures, a γ process is detected by both dielectric and dynamic mechanical experiments. It is assigned to small amplitude oscillations of the isophthalic acid units of the HBA33 polymer. At high temperatures, a heavy overlap of broad rate distributions for the β and γ processes observed in the measurements precludes a more detailed analysis. A dielectric relaxation, denoted δ relaxation, is observed at very low temperatures. It likely comes from motions of a very small number of water molecules trapped in the structure of the terpolyester.
