    Description: An algebraic procedure for generating boundary-fitted grids about wing-fuselage configurations is presented. A wing-fuselage configuration consists of two aircraft components specified by cross sections and mathematically represented by Coons' patches. Several grid blocks are constructed to cover the entire region surrounding the configuration, and each grid block maps into a computational cube. Grid points are first determined on the six boundary surfaces of a block and then in the interior. Grid points on the surface of the configuration are derived from the intersection of planes with the Coons' patch definition. Approximate arc length distributions along the resulting grid curves concentrate and disperse grid points. The two-boundary technique and transfinite interpolation are used to determine grid points on the remaining boundary surfaces and block interiors.

    Description: The D version of the Unified Subsonic Supersonic Aerodynamic Analysis (USSAERO) program is the result of numerous modifications and enhancements to the B01 version. These changes include conversion to ANSI standard FORTRAN 77; use of the DI-3000 graphics package; removal of the overlay structure; a revised input format; the addition of an input data analysis routine; and increasing the number of aeronautical components allowed.

    Description: The thermal Energy Flow Simulation (TEFS) computer program was developed to simulate transient heat transfer through composite solids and predict interfacial temperatures. The program and its usage are described. A simulation of the thermal response of a new thermal protection tile design for the Space Shuttle Orbiter is presented and graphically compared with actual data. An example is also provided which shows the program's usage as a design tool for theoretical models.

    Description: An algebraic grid generation technique and use of an associated interactive computer program are described. The technique, called the two boundary technique, is based on Hermite cubic interpolation between two fixed, nonintersecting boundaries. The boundaries are referred to as the bottom and top, and they are defined by two ordered sets of points. Left and right side boundaries which intersect the bottom and top boundaries may also be specified by two ordered sets of points. when side boundaries are specified, linear blending functions are used to conform interior interpolation to the side boundaries. Spacing between physical grid coordinates is determined as a function of boundary data and uniformly space computational coordinates. Control functions relating computational coordinates to parametric intermediate variables that affect the distance between grid points are embedded in the interpolation formulas. A versatile control function technique with smooth-cubic-spline functions is presented. The technique works best in an interactive graphics environment where computational displays and user responses are quickly exchanged. An interactive computer program based on the technique and called TBGG (two boundary grid generation) is also described.

    Description: An algebraic grid generation procedure that defines a patched multiple-block grid system suitable for fighter-type aircraft geometries with fuselage and engine inlet, canard or horizontal tail, cranked delta wing and vertical fin has been developed. The grid generation is based on transfinite interpolation and requires little computational power. A finite-volume Euler solver using explicit Runge-Kutta time-stepping has been adapted to this grid system and implemented on the VPS-32 vector processor with a high degree of vectorization. Grids are presented for an experimental aircraft with fuselage, canard, 70-20-cranked wing, and vertical fin. Computed inviscid compressible flow solutions are presented for Mach 2 at 3.79, 7 and 10 deg angles of attack. Conmparisons of the 3.79 deg computed solutions are made with available full-potential flow and Euler flow solutions on the same configuration but with another grid system. The occurrence of an unsteady solution in the 10 deg angle of attack case is discussed.

    Description: Te RESFAC2 version of the Thermal Response Factor Program (RESFAC) is the result of numerous modifications and additions to the original RESFAC. These modifications and additions have significantly reduced the program's computational time requirement. As a result of this work, the program is more efficient and its code is both readable and understandable. This report describes what a thermal response factor is; analyzes the original matrix algebra calculations and root finding techniques; presents a new root finding technique and streamlined matrix algebra; supplies ten validation cases and their results.
