    Description: Biomolecular self-assembly provides a green, facile, and highly effective method to synthesize various functional nanomaterials that have exhibited considerable potential in the fields of nanotechnology, materials science, biomedicine, tissue engineering, food science, energy storage, and environmental science. In this collection of articles, we presented recent advance in the synthesis, characterization, and applications of self-assembled bio-nanomaterials. In a comprehensive review article, the controlled self-assembly of biomolecules including DNA, protein, peptide, enzymes, virus, and biopolymers via internal interactions and external simulations is introduced and discussed in detail. In other research articles, the self-assembly of DNA, protein, peptide, bio-drugs, liquid crystal polycarbonates, and diblock copolymers to various biomimetic/bioinspired nanomaterials and their potential applications in nanopatterning, sensors/biosensors, drug delivery, anti-parasite, and water purification are demonstrated.

    Notes: The dependence of the transformation rate on the multiaxial stress state corresponding todifferent loading paths is investigated. On the basis of the single shear, uniaxial tension, plane strainand equibiaxial stretching tests, the influence of stress state on stability of retained austenite isanalyzed and an equation of transformation kinetics is developed. In sheet metal forming, the materialundergoes complicated deformation, the prediction of the volume fraction of retained austeniteduring forming process is essential to estimate the contribution of the TRIP effect to improvingformability. To this aim, the volume fraction of retained austenite in the part’s different regions hasbeen calculated using finite element method. The calculated results were compared with theexperimental data measured in deep drawing experiments

    Notes: Moraxella catarrhalis outer membrane proteins, CD and ubiquitous surface protein A (UspA), were used as carriers for M. catarrhalis detoxified lipooligosaccharide (dLOS)-based conjugates. Our study was designed to investigate the feasibility of CD and UspA as protein carriers for dLOS-based conjugates and their possible synergic effects on protection from both anti-LOS and anti-CD or anti-UspA antibody responses. Female Balb/c mice were immunized subcutaneously three times with dLOS–CD or dLOS–UspA conjugate in Ribi adjuvant. Antisera elicited by the conjugates showed high titers of specific anti-LOS antibodies with complement-dependent bactericidal activity towards M. catarrhalis strain 25238. In a mouse aerosol challenge model, mice immunized with both conjugates showed a significant enhancement of the clearance of strain 25238 from lungs as compared with the control mice. Although both conjugates elicited reduced (relative to unconjugated CD or UspA) but significant levels of anti-CD or UspA antibodies, they did not show synergetic effects with anti-LOS antibodies on the bactericidal activity or the pulmonary bacterial clearance. Nevertheless, CD and UspA are safe and effective new carriers for dLOS-based or other potential carbohydrate-based conjugate vaccines to help thymus-independent carbohydrate antigens for production of anti-carbohydrate antibodies against target pathogens.

    Notes: In order to improve the surface properties of the machine parts, the NiAl cladding Cr3C2powder were flame and plasma sprayed. The morphology, microstructure, composition and wearproperties of the coatings were examined. The results show that due to the exothermal reaction of theNi and Al elements, the bonding strength of the coatings are improved, and the main compositions ofthe coatings are Ni3Al inter-metallic compound and Cr3C2. The flame sprayed and plasma sprayedcoatings show almost the same micro-hardness and friction coefficient. But the microstructure of theplasma sprayed coating is more compact than that of the frame sprayed one and the wear resistance ofthe flame and sprayed coatings is 30% and 120% higher than that of the 1045 steel, respectively. Themain wear mechanisms of the coatings are plastic deformation and spallation, and the high bondingstrength and the uniformly distributed Cr3C2 particles play important anti-wear roles

    Notes: Abstract Select strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) were evaluated in greenhouse experiments with cucumber for induction of resistance against cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber) feeding and the beetle-transmitted cucurbit wilt disease. When beetles were given a choice between PGPR-treated and nontreated cucumber, their feeding on stems and cotyledons and the severity of wilt symptoms were significantly lower on PGPR-treated plants. HPLC analysis demonstrated that cotyledons from PGPR-treated plants contained significantly lower concentrations of the cucumber beetle feeding stimulant cucurbitacin than nontreated plants. These results suggest that a mechanism for PGPR-induced resistance against cucumber beetle feeding may involve a change in the metabolic pathway for cucurbitacin synthesis.

    Notes: Abstract During studies on internal plant colonization by rhizosphere bacteria and endophytic bacteria over several years, we frequently observed lack of growth of rifampicin-resistant mutants (rif+) on tryptic soy agar amended with rifampicin (RTSA). Following seed treatment of cucumber with 6 species of rif+ rhizosphere bacteria in one experiment, all strains were recoverable on RTSA when external root colonization was monitored. Following trituration of surface-disinfested roots, only one strain grew directly on RTSA; however colonies isolated on tryptic soy agar (TSA) grew within 18 h after transfer to RTSA. We term this temporary loss of the antibiotic-resistant phenotype ‘antibiotic masking’. Antibiotic masking was also observed with isolation of 7 rif+ endophytic bacterial strains from inside stems of cotton and with isolation of mutants of bacterial endophytes resistant to polymyxin B sulfate from cotton plants. Rifampicin-masking was not accounted for in vitro by inhibitory compounds from cotton plant extracts, by bacterial growth on low nutrient agar, or by competition with other bacteria. Collectively, these results suggest that expression of antibiotic-resistance may be altered in planta, although causes for this antibiotic-masking remain to be elucidated, methods for quantifying internal plant colonization by rif+ bacteria should account for this possibility. ei]Section editor: R O D Dixon
