Notes: . The microsporidium, Enterocytozoon bieneusi, causes a severe, debilitating, chronic diarrhea in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Specific diagnosis of intestinal microsporidiosis, especially due to Enterocytozoon, is difficult and there is no known therapy that can completely eradicate this parasite. Preliminary studies indicate that a short term (about 6 months) in vitro culture of this parasite yielding low numbers of spores, may be established by inoculating human lung fibroblasts and/or monkey kidney cell cultures with duodenal aspirates and or biopsy from infected patients. The cultures may subsequently be used for the isolation and molecular analysis of parasite DNA.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an assumption/commitment specification technique and a refinement calculus for networks of agents communicating asynchronously via unbounded FIFO channels in the tradition of Kahn. We define two types of assumption/commitment specifications, namely simple and general specifications. It is shown that semantically, any deterministic agent can be uniquely characterized by a simple specification, and any nondeterministic agent can be uniquely characterized by a general specification. We define two sets of refinement rules, one for simple specifications and one for general specifications. The rules are Hoare-logic inspired. In particular the feedback rules employ invariants in the style of a traditional while-rule. Both sets of rules have been proved to be sound and also (semantic) relative complete. Conversion rules allow the two logics to be combined. This means that general specifications and the rules for general specifications have to be introduced only at the point in a system development where they are really needed.

Description / Table of Contents: Thionitrosyl Complexes of Osmium. Crystal Structure of AsPh4[OsCl4(NS)2Cl]The reaction of osmium pentachloride with trithiazyl chloride (NSCl)3 yields the thiazylchloride complex [OsCl4(NSCl)2], from which the thionitrosyl complex AsPh4[OsCl4(NS)2Cl] is obtained by reaction with AsPh4Cl in CH2Cl2. From this, the neutral thionitrosyl complex [OsCl4(NS)2] forms by chloride abstraction with gallium trichloride. The crystal structure of AsPh4[OsCl4(NS)2Cl] was determined and refined with the aid of X-ray diffraction data (R = 0.033, 2161 reflexions). It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with four formula units per unit cell. The lattice constants are a = 1735, b = 1058, c = 1578 pm and β 95.64°.In the [OsCl4(NS)2Cl]- ion the osmium is octahedrally coordinated by four Cl atoms and two NS groups in a cis arrangement. The NS groups are essentially linear with the bond lengths Os=N 184 pm and N=S 146 pm. Loosely attached to one of the S atoms there is a Cl atom (S—Cl distance 228 pm); in the crystal it statistically belongs to both S atoms with an occupation probability of one half, and it cannot be decided whether there is a dynamical fluctuation between the S atoms or a static positional disorder. However, according to the i.r. spectrum the dynamical model seems more probable.

Description / Table of Contents: Reaction of Osmium Pentachloride with Trichloro Acetonitrile. Crystal Structure of PPh4[Cl5Os(NC(CCl3)NCCl(CCl3))] · CH2Cl2.Osmium pentachloride reacts with excess trichloro acetonitrile in the presence of chlorine, forming Cl4OsVI(NC(CCl3)NCCl(CCl3))2 (= Cl4OsL2), an orange-red powder. According to the i.r. spectrum, the ligands L are coordinated to the osmium in trans-position. In the reaction with PPh4Cl, one of the ligands L is exchanged against chloride; the free ligand dissociates into two moles trichloro acetonitrile and half a mole chlorine. Excess boron tribromide turns Cl4OsL2 into Br4Os(NC(CCl3)NCBr(CCl3))2, which has a violet colour.A crystal structure determination of PPh4[Cl5OsV(NC(CCl3)NCCl(CCl3))] · CH2Cl2, which crystallizes triclinic in the space group P1 with two formula units per unit cell, was carried out with the aid of X-ray diffraction data (R = 0.091; 4 285 independent reflexions). The structure consists of tetraphenylphosphonium cations and anions [OsCl5L]⊖, in which the osmium atom is coordinated in a distorted octahedron by five CI ligands and one N atom of the ligand L. The Os—N bond length (197 pm) is slightly shorter than the expectation value of a 0s-N single bond; however there is a significant difference between the Os—CI bond lengths of the trans-positioned C1 atom (2.28 pm) and the equatorial C1 atoms (233 pm). The ligand Le is a product of dimerisation of two molecules of trichloro acetonitrile and the addition of one chloride ion. The frame atoms NCNCC form two planes almost perpendicular to each other, so that there is no overall resonance.

Description / Table of Contents: Five-coordinated Complexes of Osmium (VIII) and Rhenium (VII). Crystal Structure of PPh4[OsO4Cl] · CH2Cl2The five-coordinated anionic complexes [OsO4Cl]⊖, [OsO4N3]⊖, and [ReO3Cl2]⊖ were isolated as tetraphenylphosphonium salts from reactions of OsO4 and ReO3Cl with PPh4Cl and PPh4N3, respectively, in dichloromethane solution. The compounds which are characterized by their i.r. spectra, are thermally sensitive and form crystalline powders with colours ranging from orange to violet. The crystal structure of PPh4[OsO4Cl] · CH2Cl2 was determined and refined with X-ray diffraction data. (4212 independent, observed reflexions, R = 0.032). It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2/b with four formula units per unit cell. The cell dimensions are at -110°C a = 1754, b = 2184 pm, c = 692 and γ = 106.7°. The structure consists of tetraphenylphosphonium cations and anions [OsO4Cl]⊖ with five-coordinated Os atoms in a trigonal bipyramidal geometry with the chlorine ligand in an axial position. The anion can also be regarded as a OsO4 tetrahedron, monocapped by a chloride ion. Each chloride ion is linked with two CH2Cl2 molecules via hydrogen bridges, forming chains in the direction c. The Os—Cl bond length (276 pm) is very long; the average OsO distance (172 pm) corresponds to that in the OsO4 molecule (170 pm).

Description: There is a strong need for simple and fast methods for wound infection determination. Myeloperoxidase, an immune system-derived enzyme was found to be a suitable biomarker for wound infection. Hence, alkoxysilane-derivatized Fast Blue RR was immobilized via simple hydrolytic polymerization. The resulting enzyme-responsive siloxane layers were incubated with myeloperoxidase, wound fluid or hemoglobin. The reaction was monitored via HPLC measurements and the color development quantified spectrophotometrically. Myeloperoxidase was indeed able to oxidize immobilized Fast Blue RR leading to a blue colored product. No conversion was detected in non-infected wound fluids. The visible color changes of these novel materials towards blue enable an easy distinction between infected and non-infected wound fluids.
