Notes: In the early 1950s, Mary Ellen Rudin wrote her first three papers: Concerning Abstract Spaces (1950), Separation in Non-Separable Spaces (1951), and Concerning a Problem of Souslin's (1952). A Modern interpretation of these articles is given.

Notes: [Auszug] Figure 1 shows that intact sea urchin eggs microinjected with the Ca2+-indicator dye Fura-2 give a large Ca2+ signal on expo-sure to a membrane-permeable form of cGMP (dibutyryl cGMP; 5 mM), after a latency period of -80 s. This Ca2+ signal was blocked by prior microinjection of the egg with ...

Notes: Abstract: The balance laws of mass, momentum and energy are considered for a broad class of one-dimensional nonlinear thermoviscoelastic materials. For the initial-boundary value problem corresponding to pinned endpoints held at constant temperature, we establish existence and uniqueness of temporally global classical solutions for initial data of unrestricted size. Our approach also applies to all boundary conditions involving pinned or stress-free endpoints which are either held at constant temperature or insulated. An additional and novel feature of the theory is that solid-like and gaseous materials are treated in a unified way.

Notes: Abstract Risk is the focal topic in the management of many activities and technologies. For that management to be successful, an explicit and accepted definition of the term “risk” is essential. Creation of that definition is a political act, expressing the definers' values regarding the relative importance of different possible adverse consequences for a particular decision. Those values, and with them the definition of risk, can change with changes in the decisionmaker, the technologies considered, or the decision problem. After a review of the sources of controversy in defining risk, a general framework is developed, showing how these value issues can be systematically addressed. As an example, the approach is applied to characterizing the risks of six competing energy technologies, the relative riskeness of which depends upon the particular definition used.

Notes: Abstract We prove an Ascoli theorem for capacities. This theorem which characterizes relatively compact sets of capacities is widely applicable and many Ascoli theorems for particular classes of capacities can immediately be deduced as corollaries. Indeed it is usually necessary only to demonstrate that these classes are closed and then to simplify the characterization when possible. In particular, we show that the proof of the classical Prohorov theorem can be naturally factored into the shorter proof of the Ascoli theorem for capacities and into the somewhat longer proof that the class of probability measures is closed in the class of capacities. We also deduce new and known Ascoli theorems for sup measures, upper semi-continuous functions, the Vietoris hyperspace topology, and various classes of measures.

Notes: Abstract Two partial ordersP andQ on a setX arecomplementary (written asP⊥Q) if they share no ordered pairs (except for loops) but the transitive closure of the union is all possible ordered pairs. For each positive integern we form a graph Pos n consisting of all nonempty partial orders on {1, …,n} with edges denoting complementation. We investigate here properties of the graphs Pos n . In particular, we show: •The diameter of Pos n is 5 for alln〉2 (and hence Pos n is connected for alln); •With probability 1, the distance between two members of Pos n is 2; •The graphs Pos n are universal (i.e. every graph occurs as an induced subgraph of some Pos n ); •The maximal size α(n) of an independent set of Pos n satisfies the asymptotic formula $$\frac{1}{4} + o(1) \leqslant \frac{{\alpha (n)}}{{p(n)}} \leqslant \frac{1}{2} + o(1),$$ wherep(n) is the order of Pos n . The results shed light on the structure of the complementation relation on all topologies on a fixed finite set.

Notes: Abstract A topology on a set X is self complementary if there is a homeomorphic copy on the same set that is a complement in the lattice of topologies on X. The problem of characterizing finite self complementary topologies leads us to redefine the problem in terms of preorders (i.e. reflexive, transitive relations). A preorder P on a set X is self complementary if there is an isomorphic copy P′ of P on X that is arc disjoint to P (except for loops) and with the property that P∪P′ is strongly connected. We characterize here self complementary finite partial orders and self complementary finite equivalence relations.

Notes: An in vitro construct of human skin (living skin equivalent, LSE) has been engineered using serially passaged human epidermal keratinocytes and human dermal fibroblasts with a matrix of type I collagen. Cells are obtained from neonatal foreskin. LSE is cast, cultured, and shipped in a single culture insert. The size and shape of theinsert determines thesize and shape of the LSE. The dermal matrix consists of dermal fibroblasts within a condensed collagen lattice. The overlying epidermis is developed at the air-liquid interface to generate a protective cornified layer. Serum was not necessaryfor development of the epidermis. LSE for graft (Graftskin) has handling characteristics similar to split-thickness skin allowing it to be meshed, stapled, and sutured. LSE was cryopreserved using 65% glycerol an rapid freezing. Viability and in vivo performance on athymic mice were similar to fresh LSE. Cells derived from human eccrine gland were able to invade and form tubules rudimentary appendages may be possible.
