    Description: Some (not all) of the oceanographic literature slightly miscalculates the vertical velocity (w) and diffusive salt flux induced by evaporation (E) and precipitation (P) at the sea surface. Short, simple, physical derivations are presented to show that, for a sea surface h = h(x, y, t) varying in space and time, 1) w = VH · h + ∂h/∂t + ρF(E − P)/ρ, where VH is the horizontal component of the aggregate parcel velocity, and ρF and ρ are the densities of freshwater and surface seawater, respectively; and 2) the vertical diffusive salt flux at the sea surface (whether molecular or turbulent) is −ρFS(E − P), where S is the surface salinity.

    Description: The First Law of Thermodynamics is developed from fundamentals for open, non-equilibrium systems of seawater in motion, exchanging salt and freshwater internally and with their surroundings, and varying continuously in temperature, pressure, and salinity. The aim is clarity and consistency of concepts - and precision in the accompanying vocabulary. Particular attention is given to the way in which salinity variation plays out in the logical structures. The arbitrary constants in the thermodynamic potentials and the various First Law equations are highlighted, in order to remove them, and to recover the physically meaningful content. When this is done, it is seen that salinity variations have little consequence in application of the First Law to the ocean, apart from affecting values of coefficients.

    Description: Nansen-bottle stations were occupied by ships and personnel of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution from 1931 to about 1981. Most of these data are in archives, but using them intelligently to depict the state of the ocean and to assess time changes in it requires knowing how the observations were made, what accuracies can be assigned to them, and generally how to approach them. This report describes the evolving methods on Woods Hole stations for measuring temperature, depth of observation, salinity, and dissolved-oxygen concentration, and for determining station position. Accuracies generally improved over time, although estimates from the early years are sparse, and even later there is indefiniteness. Analytical error is to be distinguished from sloppy sample collection and blunders. The routine for carrying out Nansen-bottle stations, from the 1950s through the 1970s, is reviewed.

    Description: Deep density-depth curves often show faint curvature reversals, stability maxima, etc. Relationships between these features and the field of motion are explored here, in reference to the South Paclfic, for interior regions and western boundary currents. For the former, an assumed balalnce between vertical advection and vertical diffusion of density implies downward movement where there is positive curvature in the density-depth curve, in association with equatorward flow of the bottom water; it is argued that such flow is a likely feature of the interaction between a stratified deep western boundary current and a stratified interior. Illustrative (though somewhat unrealistic) analytical examples are given. In the western boundary region it is the difference between local and interior densities which seems to be related to details of the velocity distribution, but only in special (and unlikely) circumstances is there a correspondence across the boundary region between the shape of the perturbation. density-depth curve and the motion field. Some comments are made concerning the implications for the interpretation of hydrographic data.

    Description: A model for the structure of deep western boundary currents, based on linear momentum equations and lateral mixing of density, is applied to data from a recent section across the Ninetyeast Ridge current in the eastern basin of the Indian Ocean. It accounts moderately well for the breadth of the current, as inferred from the density distribution, and for the form of its velocity profile, as inferred (roughly) from the silica distribution.
