Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
1-Azocyclohexane carbonitrile, labelled with carbon-14 in the nitrile groups, has been prepared. The decomposition in benzene at 80°C. has been followed by isotope dilution analysis for unchanged azonitrile; kd is 8.3·10-6 sec-1. Rates of initiation in the polymerization of styrene have been determined from measurements of rates of polymerization and concentrations of labelled end-groups in polymers; the efficiency of initiation is about 88%. Diphenylpicrylhydrazyl does not suppress completely the interaction of pairs of radicals formed by dissociation of the azonitrile. Transfer to this initiator is unimportant in the polymerization of styrene at 80°C. No evidence has been obtained that the decomposition of this azonitrile in benzene leads to a product capable of acting as an initiator of radical polymerization.
