The electron ionization mass spectra obtained, on two types of GC/MS instrument, of an impurity peak in a sample of fluorotrichloroethene (1) were those of two different compounds, viz., the epoxide of 1 and trichloroacetyl fluoride. Confirmation of the latter structure was provided by evidence from infrared spectroscopy. A study, on both instruments, of the variation of injector, source and interface temperatures has shown that the sample impurity is actually the epoxide which, at sufficiently high interface-region temperatures, can be converted to the acyl fluoride species. Ab initio molecular orbital calculations have confirmed that the acyl fluoride is more stable than the epoxide.
