Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The phenomenon of “Stockwerk“-tectonics characterizes Eastern Crete. Autochthonous bedded limestone (“Plattenkalk”) is overlain by the allochthonous units of the “Phyllitic-Series”, the Tripolitza- und Pindos-Series. The “Phyllitic-Series” were recognized as a mélange. The mélange is due to gravity-sliding tectonics under an overburden pressure. Geological evolution and geophysical data across the section Santorin-Crete were interpreted. Instead of a mobile crust hypothesis of moving plates with subduction zones a fixed crust hypothesis of vertical uplift and corresponding subsidence is suggested. The nappe transport by forces of gravity is a secondary effect.

Notes: Abstract The geological setting, petrography and bulk mineral chemistry of a monzodiorite and a presumably consanguineous megaporphyry with large (up to 25 cm) labradorite megacrysts, both intruding the upper Proterozoic Saramuj Conglomerate in south-west Jordan (south eastern shore of the Dead Sea), were examined. The crystallization temperatures of the monzodiorite and the megaporphyry as determined from pyroxene thermometry and supported by contact metamorphic mineralogy are about 700 and 900°C, respectively. The intrusion depth of the monzodiorite is about 3–4 km. The monzodiorite was emplaced in the Saramuj Conglomerate at about 595 + 2 Ma ago according to Rb/Sr and U/Pb age determinations. The stratigraphic positions of the monzodiorite, megaporphyry and their host rock (the Saramuj Conglomerate) were compared with time-equivalent lithologies in the Arabian-Nubian Shield.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract In the realm of the Southern Aegean Arc four allochthonous units are piled up above the autochthonous “Cherty Limestone” (Permian-Oligocene). The allochthonous units are derived from different Mesozoic to Paleogene facies zones which originally were arranged in concentric belts in the Central Aegean Sea. The nappe pile consists — from bottom to top — of neritic carbonates, pelagic carbonates and a volcano-sedimentary complex along the entire arc. These competent units are separated by incompetent members of mainly flyschoid sediments, acting as lubricants. The intercalated sediments were deformed to mélanges due to tectonic transport. Facies analysis, stratigraphy and the style of deformation lead to a correlation of type sections of the southern Aegean nappe pile and its relation to the southwestern part of Turkey. The nappe transport is caused by diapiric uplift and lateral shifting of a thermal dome. A radial gravity transport occurred on its inclined boundary plane.
