Description / Table of Contents: Reductive Removal of Phenolic Hydroxy Groups, 2. Hydrogenolytic Cleavage of O-Aryl-N,N-dialkylisoureasPhenols are converted into aromatic hydrocarbons under mild conditions and in good yields by catalytic hydrogenation of their corresponding O-aryl-N,N-diethylisoureas. Benzene and anilin are formed from p-chlorophenol and p-nitrophenol respectively. The reductive cleavage is sensitive to sterical factors.

Description / Table of Contents: A Simple Method for the Reduction of Alcohols to HydrocarbonsAlcohols are converted to hydrocarbons in good yields by catalytic hydrogenation of the corresponding O-alkylisoureas. In the case of O-isobornylisourea the reductive cleavage is accompanied by rearrangement of the carbon skeleton to give endo-isocamphane.

Description / Table of Contents: Reactions of Thiophenols with dicyclohexylcarbodiimideThiophenols (2) react with dicyclohexylcarbodiimide to give S-aryl-N,N′-dcyclohexyliso-thioureas (3). In the case of less acidic thiophenols, at elevated temperatures, this reaction is followed by the formation of diaryldisulfides (6) and N,N′-dicyclohexylformamidine (7). In addition small amounts of tris- and bis(arylthio) methane are formed. p-Nitrothiophenol in a subsequent reaction yields bis (p-nitrophenyl)sulfide (11) and N,N′-dicyclohexylthiourea (12). In addition small quantities of N,N′-dicyclohexyl-N-(p-nitrophenyl)thiourea (13) are obtained, wich are formed by S → N-rearrangement of the nitrophenyl group.

Description / Table of Contents: Conversion of Aldehydes into Nitriles without Isolation of IntermediatesAldehydes are converted into nitriles without isolation of the intermediates by treating their oximes with carbodiimides in the presence of copper(II)ions and triethylamine. The entire process requires 3 hours at room temperature; it is unsuccessful if the oxime does not form or is consumed by competition reactions.

Description / Table of Contents: Cell Wall Pigments of Peat Mosses, 2. The Structure of SphagnorubinThe structure of the red cell wall pigment sphagnorubin has been elucidated. It is the anhydro-base of an anthocyanidin with a 2-phenylphenanthro[2,1-b]pyran skeleton which is hitherto unknown for flavonoids.

Description / Table of Contents: A New Method for the Reductive Removal of Phenolic Hydroxy GroupsPhenols can be dehydroxylated in a two-step process via their isourea derivatives. In the first step the phenols add to carbodiimides to give the O-arylisoureas. Subsequent hydrogenation at room temperature yields the aromatic hydrocarbons and disubstituted ureas. Steric effects are of influence in the reductive cleavage. The entire process can also be accomplished without isolation of the intermediate isoureas.
