    Notes: Abstract The kinetic study of thermal degradation takes into account the validity of the Arrhenius equation. From TG data, the activation energy,E a and pre-exponential factor,A, are evaluated. These results are interpreted by using the ‘kinetic compensation effect’ as basis. A linear correlation between In(A) andE a is obtained in all cases studied. However, in a plot of the logarithm of the rate constant as a function of reciprocal temperature for the same series of reactions, the thermal oxidative degradations of Nylon-6 and PVC display a point of concurrence and one isokinetic temperature, whereas those of HIPS and PC do not. Therefore, in the thermal oxidative degradations of Nylon-6 and PVC a ‘true’ compensation effect occurs, which could be related to the bulk properties of metal oxides, such as different valence states, whereas for other polymers it displays only an ‘apparent’ compensation effect. This means that degradation is largely independent of the bulk properties of oxides, but may be related to the distribution of different kinds of active links in the polymer surface having different activation energies.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetic parameters for the thermal degradation of high impact polystyrene (HIPS) in presence of some metal oxides exhibit reaction rate compensation effect. In thermal degradation of HIPS in presence of transition metal oxides different active centers act simultaneously as reaction sites and macroradicals are formed through random chain scission, disproportion or cyclization. Some oxides retard the polymer degradation through crosslinking and cyclization by the interaction of macroradicals with the double bond in butadiene.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On développe une solution générale à la distribution symétrique de contraintes de flexion à l'extrémité d'une entaille dans une plaque soumise à une déformation de cisaillement, en tenant compte de la théorie de Reissner. La solution est obtenue sous forme de coordonnées polaires à l'extrémité de la fissure et comporte l'ensemble des solutions satisfaisant à toutes les conditions de frontières le long de la fissure. La solution comporte des constantes multiplicatives arbitraires et, dans des problèmes spécifiques, ces constantes peuvent être déterminées à partir des conditions de confinement extérieur à l'aide de techniques numériques bien connues telles que la collocation ou l'intégration successive. Les résultats d'une solution numérique dans le cas d'une plaque carrée comportant une fissure centrale soumise à flexion uniaxiale sont présentés en même temps qu'une discussion critique de la sensibilité de la solution numérique associée au caractère exponentiel des termes de Bessel dans cette solution analytique d'une ordre supérieur.
    Notes: Abstract A general solution is developed for the symmetric bending stress distribution at the tip of a crack in a plate taking shear deformation into account through Reissner's theory. The solution is obtained in terms of polar coordinates at the crack tip and includes the complete class of solutions satisfying all the three boundary conditions along the crack. The solution has arbitrary multiplicative constants and in specific problems, these constants can be determined from conditions on the exterior boundary by well-known numerical techniques such as collocation, successive integration. Results of a numerical solution for a square plate with a central crack subject to uniaxial bending are presented along with a critical discussion of the sensitivity of the numerical solution which is associated with the exponential character of Bessel terms in this higher order analytical solution.

    Notes: Kinetic comparisons have been made between a randomly immobilized and a site-specifically immobilized subtilisin BPN′ on microfiltration membranes of varying hydrophilicities in both aqueous and organic media. Site-directed mutagenesis was employed to introduce a single cysteine into the amino acid sequence of subtilisin at a location away from the active site. Immobilization of this mutant enzyme was then carried out using the single cysteine residue to orient the active site of the enzyme away from the membrane surface. Kinetic comparison of the immobilized mutant enzyme with the randomly immobilized wild-type enzyme in aqueous media showed an activity enhancement on both hydrophilic silica-containing and hydrophobic poly(ether)sulfone membranes. Higher loading efficiencies were observed for the site-directed enzyme on immobilization. Optimal enzyme loading values were calculated for the randomly immobilized enzyme. An enhancement of activity was also observed for the site-directed immobilized systems using nearly anhydrous hexane as the solvent. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: A clearer understanding of the problems associated with reduced integration and optimum integration schemes for the development of Mindlin plate elements is presented. It is shown that an optimal selective integration rule can be found for the 4-node quadrilateral plate bending element which requires 2 × 2 Gaussian integration for bending energy and 1 × 2 and 2 × 1 rules for the shear energy terms from (θx - w,x) and (θy - w,y), respectively. This will give an element of correct rank, without any zero energy mechanisms and without shear locking in the thin plate limit, and better performance in moderately thick situations than the currently available 4-node quadrilaterals using one-point shear integration or modified one-point shear integration due to Hughes et al. The effects of arbitrary orientation of the grid and the non-rectangular form of element are discussed.

    Description: Litter plays a vital role in the nutrient cycling of plantations and agroforests. Silvicultural interventions can alter litter production and decay rates, thereby varying nutrient fluxes. We evaluated the effect of various thinning densities on litter dynamics of 9-year-old Acacia mangium Willd. stands. To quantify litterfall, we placed traps at four random grid points in 24 plots in which none, one-third, one-half, or two-thirds of stems had been removed. In each plot, 48 litterbags were also placed to evaluate litter decay. Annual litterfall ranged from 5.73 (two-thirds thinning) to 11.18 Mg·ha−1 (unthinned) and showed a significant linear relationship to basal area (p 〈 0.0001). Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) concentrations were highest during the wet season, when litterfall production was low, implying an inverse relationship between litterfall quality and quantity. The highest annual N, P, and K additions (82.9, 3.3, and 71.9 kg·ha−1, respectively) occurred in the unthinned stands. High thinning intensities resulted in accelerated decay rates, which we attribute to changes in microenvironment. Soil N concentrations were highest in the one-half thinning treatment, followed by the two-thirds treatment, signifying a trade-off between litterfall production and decay. The highest soil organic C concentrations were in the unthinned stands, reflecting the potential of high stand densities for promoting C sequestration.

    Description: The scaling behavior of hardness with ligament diameter and vacancy defect concentration in nanoporous Au (np-Au) has been investigated using a combination of Vickers Hardness, Scanning electron microscopy, and positron lifetime measurements. It is shown that for np-Au, the hardness scales with the ligament diameter with an exponent of −0.3, that is, at variance with the conventional Hall-Petch exponent of −0.5 for bulk systems, as seen in the controlled experiments on cold worked Au with varying grain size. The hardness of np-Au correlates with the vacancy concentration C V within the ligaments, as estimated from positron lifetime experiments, and scales as C V 1/2 , pointing to the interaction of dislocations with vacancies. The distinctive Hall-Petch exponent of −0.3 seen for np-Au, with ligament diameters in the range of 5–150 nm, is rationalized by invoking the constrained motion of dislocations along the ligaments.
