Notes: We have studied the magnetic behavior of amorphous Y-3d based systems, using resistivity and Hall effect measurements. YxNi1−x metallic glasses show a very different magnetic behavior from Fe glasses, with a cross over (x=0.22) from weak itinerant ferromagnetism to paramagnetism. Two more magnetic metallic glasses have been studied, a typical ferromagnetic system Fe-Si-Y (with Fe content only 52%) and a noncollinear ferrimagnetic (sperimagnetic) system (Fe-Si-Tb). In spite of their very different magnetic mechanisms the resistivities all show low temperature minima with logarithmic dependence below the minima temperatures. This behavior is not magnetic field dependent, with applied fields up to 70 kOe. We show Hall effect measurements that easily distinguish the different intrinsic mechanisms.

Notes: Resistance measurements have been done in amorphous Nd12Fe80B8 sputtered films and in amorphous sputtered Nd26Fe68B6/Fe92B8 multilayers between 6 and 150 K with applied magnetic field parallel (LMR) and perpendicular (TMR) up to 7 T. The samples were grown by dc triode sputtering, with nominal unequal (2:1) layer thicknesses. The layered character of the samples have been tested by x-ray diffraction. Longitudinal magnetoresistance (LMR) is positive and transverse magnetoresistance (TMR) is negative. The magnetoresistance values are higher than in amorphous ferromagnets, and multilayering of these alloys produces much larger magnetoresistance values than either alloy alone and there is a strong dependence on the multilayer wavelength. The MR shows a weak temperature dependence in the temperature interval that was investigated.

Notes: Multilayers of Nb/Ni and Ni/Si have been fabricated by dc triode sputtering. Standard x-ray diffraction in the reflection geometry shows good layering for both systems with several orders in small-angle scans which correspond to the modulation of the films. High-angle scans show that Nb/Ni films growth with (111) texture for Ni layers and (110) for Nb layers. Ni/Si multilayers do not show any texture. Transverse magnetoresistance (TMR), longitudinal magnetoresistance (LMR), and the spontaneous anisotropy of the resistivity (SAR) have been measured with an applied field up to 70 kOe and between 10 and 110 K and bilayer thicknesses between 60 and 200 A(ring). Both systems show LMR and TMR to be very small in comparison with pure Ni films. The SAR effect is temperature independent and increases with bilayer thickness. Also, it is higher for Nb/Ni than Ni/Si multilayers with ρ(parallel) 〉ρ⊥ for Ni/Si but ρ(parallel) 〈ρ⊥ for Nb/Ni samples.

Notes: Magnetic measurements of hysteresis loops and transverse susceptibilities have been done on as-cast iron based amorphous alloys on the surface and in the bulk of the ribbons. Bitter technique has been used to obtain the domain patterns. a-Fe78B13Si9 shows an anisotropy perpendicular to the ribbon plane with maze domain "island'' structures. The surface measurements do not detect any difference in behavior compared to the observed bulk properties. a-Fe81.5B14.5Si4 shows different behavior in the surface and in the bulk of the ribbon with a perminvar-type hysteresis loop from the surface and magnetization perpendicular to the ribbon plane with well-aligned closure domains. The analysis of the different magnetic experimental data and selective changes in the internal stresses produced by different treatments support a model of the layered character of the anisotropies in this sample with tensile stresses and in-plane anisotropy in the surface and compressive stresses and anisotropy perpendicular to the ribbon's surface in the bulk. Finally, a rough calculation shows that the thickness of the surface in-plane anisotropy region is of the order of the surface roughness.

Notes: Submicrometric magnetic structures have been fabricated by electron-beam lithography on Si substrates. High-quality patterns have been obtained with typical length scale of the structures in the range of 100 nm. The designed geometrical configurations are suitable for investigation of their physical properties by transport measurements in a controlled way. In particular, long chains of connected magnetic dots are useful to analyze magnetization reversal processes, whereas ordered arrays of isolated dots can be used to study pinning effects in superconducting films. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Pure a-axis and c-axis oriented EuBa2Cu3O7 films have been grown by a dc sputtering technique. The a-axis films show critical current values typically one order of magnitude lower than c-axis films. The Jc(T) behavior could be governed, in a-axis films, by the microstructure of these films with small domains and 90° boundaries, but Jc(B) does not seem to be limited by weak links. The magnetic-field dependence of Jc shows a similar behavior in a-axis and c-axis films with a leading role of pinning in controlling the critical current in the high-field range. Jc(B) is limited by flux creep with a similar distribution of pinning energies in both types of films, in spite of the very different microstructure. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Changes in the visible and infrared cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra of YBa2Cu3O7−x are detected during irradiation in the scanning electron microscope. Results indicate the influence of oxygen content on the appearance of a CL band at 450–600 nm. In irradiated samples an infrared band at 1600–1700 nm has been observed.

Notes: a-axis oriented EuBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7 (EBCO/PBCO) superlattices have been grown by dc sputtering. The critical current (JC) behavior is modified by the pinning force arising from the insulating PrBa2Cu3O7 layers, which in a-axis oriented superlattices are perpendicular to the Cu–O planes. Depending on the EBCO and PBCO layer thicknesses the pinning forces deviate from the usual scaling laws as a function of temperature observed in single films. When B is perpendicular to the sample, an exponential dependence of JC(B) appears as the PBCO thickness is increased (coupling is reduced), and also as the thickness of the EBCO layer is reduced. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) depth profiles were carried out on c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7−x films grown in situ onto SrTiO3 (100) and polycrystalline yttria-stabilized zirconia substrates. These films were grown by on-axis single-target dc planar magnetron sputtering, and they show zero resistance as high as 90.2 K and critical currents above 105 A/cm2 (77 K). The AES depth profiles reveal a clear oxygen loss at the interface. This oxygen deficiency corresponds to an atomic decrease from 7 to 6.6–6.3 per unit cell, in good agreement with the tetragonal structure oxygen composition. This confirms the oxygen-deficient first stages of YBa2Cu3O7−x film growth on some usual cubic substrates, and that those first layers do not become fully oxidized after the oxygen intake on the cooling in O2 atmosphere.
