Summary The thin layer Chromatographic separation of alkaloids on hydrated magnesium oxide impregnated with calcium chloride was tested with respect to their fluorimetric analysis. The adsorbent employed has the special advantage over the adsorbents previously employed in thin layer chromatography of dissolving readily and completely in acids. Accordingly it is. possible to recover the chromatographed alkaloids rapidly and quantitatively without elution. Quinine was quantitatively determined through its fluorescence in sulfuric acid, hydrastine after conversion into hydrastinin, and reserpine after treatment with sodium nitrite orp-toluenesulfonic acid. In all the cases tested the relation between the intensity of fluorescence and concentration remained strictly proportional.
