Notes: Abstract Ultrastructural modifications of the cell wall coat of Candida albicans during adherence to host cells were investigated using various cytochemical techniques. Attachment of the fungus to buccal epithelial cells appeared to involve spatial rearrangement of their cell wall surface. In particular adhering yeast developed a fibrogranular surface layer visualized by the periodic acid — thiocarbohydrazide silver proteinate technique (a polysaccharide detectron technique); Concanavalin A binding sites detected on their cell wall coat were highly increased. Attachment of yeasts to epithelial cells appeared mediated by fibrillar structures or polysaccharidic granules distributed on the cell wall coat. But free extra-cell wall material containing mannoproteins released from the yeast surface suggested additional mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract: Results of high-energy magnetic X-ray diffraction on pure antiferromagnetic chromium are presented. The temperature dependence of the propagation vector of the spin-density wave (SDW) and the strain-wave (SW) could be reproduced. The temperature dependence of the magnetic integrated intensity could be measured in the transversally as well as in the longitudinally polarised SDW phase. The magnetic form-factor has been determined in the transversally polarised SDW phase with five magnetic satellites. For the first time a spin-orbit separation has been performed by comparing X-ray to neutron data. The small orbital contribution to the magnetisation density turns out to be negligible, in agreement to our relativistic band-structure calculations. In addition, measurements of strain-wave reflections have been undertaken, and the results complement previous studies.

Notes: Abstract A chemical method for lipid extraction has been applied to Candida albicans blastospores previously to their examination by transmission electron microscopy. The results led to the concept of a superficial location of lipids bounded to the peptidopolysaccharidic matrix of the cell wall. This lipid extraction also allowed us to describe cell wall microfibrillar structures. Two types of microfibrills have been particularly identified: (1) microfibrils of approximately 50 Å in diameter, involved in a network of the cell wall intermediate layers and supposed to correspond to ß 1–3 glucans; (2) fibrillar structures of 120 Å in diameter, similar to chitin microfibrils, observed in the bud scar septum.

Notes: Abstract Mice were inoculated with different quantities of blastospores ofCandida albicans by subcutaneous or intravenous ways. Delayed hypersensitivity was then studied during the course of infection by means of the inhibition of macrophage spreading test. In the same time retrocultures were done from kidney material, target organs in the experimental candidiasis. The results obtained in this way enabled the authors to think that cellular immunity plays a role in this experimental model as described by Mackaness.

Notes: Abstract The ultrastructural study of spermatogenesis inT. spiralis demonstrated the main characteristics of the male germ cells in the class Nematoda, i.e. lack of flagella, lack of reconstitution of the nuclear envelope after the meiotic divisions, and atypical structure of the centriole. The spermatozoon ofT. spiralis was compared with previous classifications of the Nematoda spermatozoa.

Notes: Abstract Freshly drawn AA and CC red cells were more suitable for in vitro development of Plasmodium falciparum than red blood cells (RBC) stored for 13 days before use. Growth rate inhibition in CC red cell cultures reached 31% in freshly drawn red cells and 57% in aged red cells of the same donor. Ultrastructural studies of CC cells revealed very important irregular cavities sometimes occupied by a granular content. Parasites in CC cells were generally normal but occasionally showed signs of functional impairment. P. falciparum growing in CC red cells was less sensitive in vitro to chloroquine than in AA red cells. This phenomenon may be explained either by the type of the hemoglobin of the host cell or to abnormal haematological parameters of the HbC homozygote donor, particularly the high proportion of neocytes. As metabolism of reduced glutathione is higher in young RBC and as chloroquine lyses parasitized RBC by reducing the regeneration capacities of this compound, the increased rate of young RBC in the CC red cell population was probably related to the decreased chloroquine sensitivity of P. falciparum growing in these cells.
