Description / Table of Contents: Reactions of Dimethylchlorophosphine with Methanol, Methanethiol, and Their Sodium SaltsDimethylchlorophosphine (1) and sodium methoxide or methylthiolate readily react to yield dimethyl(methoxy)phosphine (2a) or dimethyl(methylthio)phosphine (2b). 2a rearranges slowly in a pure state, and fast in the presence of methyl chloride or iodide to give trimethylphosphine oxide (3a). Methyl iodide and 2b afford a very stable phosphonium salt, which only decomposes on melting at 170° to yield trimethylphosphine sulfide (3b). Dimethylphosphine oxide (4a) is formed by hydrolysis of 2a and 2b.1 and methanol first afford dimethyl(methoxy)phosphonium chloride (5a), which decomposes already above -10° to give 4a and methyl chloride. Moreover dimethyl phosphinic acid 6) and its methyl ester (7a), as well as dimethylphosphine (8) and dimethylphosphonium chloride (9) are produced in an irreversible reaction. It seems very likely that 1 and mercaptane first afford a phosphonium salt 5b which corresponds to 5a. But this compound decomposes readily to yield 9 and dimethyl(bismethylthio)phosphonium chloride (10). By the facile cleavage of methyl chloride from 10 at 120° the methyl ester of dimethyldithiophosphinic acid (7b) has been obtained. The new compounds have been characterized by the data of their vaporization, melting points, and spectroscopic properties.
