Notes: Abstract The radioactive element distribution in the Archean granulite facies rocks of Jequié, Brazil, has been determined. The K/Rb ratios show a large spread with majority of the values falling within the normal field (K/Rb〈300). The Th/U ratios fall into two groups, one group with values in the range of 1.7 to 2.6, whereas the other group show Th/U values greater than 7 (7 to 25). These distributions can be explained on the basis of the presence of accessory minerals apatite and zircon. The relatively high concentrations of the radioactive and other elements in Jequié granulites probably represents the relict primary geochemical character, little modified during metamorphism. The radiogenic heat production data for the area are calculated and using the measured regional heat flow value from nearby area an estimate of the relative thickness of the continental lithosphere is made using the model developed by Oxburgh (1981).

Notes: Abstract In the present work, a comparative study is made among nuclear methods for235U/238U ratios determination: activation analysis followed by high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry, delayed neutron counting, passive gamma-ray and alpha spectrometry. Activation analysis followed by high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry yielded a relative standard deviation down to 0.1% and a relative error of about 1% for standards of uranium enriched to 14%. Passive gamma-ray spectrometry using Ge(Li) detectors yielded a relative error down to 0.1% for enriched uranium and values even lower for the standard deviation. Passive gamma-ray spectrometry using Low Energy Photon Detector (LEPD) yielded a precision of 0.2% and a still better accuracy for enriched standards. In the case of alpha spectrometry, a relative error down to 0.5% and a precision of about 1% were obtained, also for enriched uranium standards. Delayed neutron counting allowed a relative standard deviation of about 7% and a relative error of about 2%, for standards of depleted uranium.

Notes: Abstract Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) has been applied to multielemental determinations of Brazilian snake venoms from the species: Bothrops jararacussu, Crotalus durissus terrificus and Bothrops jararaca. Concentrations of Br, Ca, Cl, Cs, K, Mg, Na, Rb, Sb, Se and Zn have been determined in lyophilized venoms by using short and long irradiations in the IEA-RI nuclear reactor under a thermal neutron flux of 1011 to 1013 n0 ·cm−2·s−1. The reference materials NIST bovine Liver 1577 and IUPAC Bowen's Kale were also analyzed simultaneously with the venoms to evaluate the accuracy and the reproducibility of the method. The concentrations of the elements found in snake venoms from different species were compared. The Crotalus durissus terrificus venoms presented high concentration of Se but low concentrations of Zn when these results are compared with those obtained from genera Bothrops venoms.

Notes: Abstract Kinetic decay of paramagnetic species formed in the radiolysis of tetracycline hydrochloride in powder form, at 77 K, shows that most of the H· is not able to migrate. Geminate recombination between H· and its partner is the main reaction: H·+TC· → TCH, although a few H· succeed in diffusing slowly. But when H· acquires enough kinetic energy to migrate, it reacts preferentially with species different from its partner. The e− is not observed by ESR, at 77 K, although tetracycline hydrochloride is a chemical trap for e− in methanol, benzyl alcohol and alkaline aqueous solutions. In the radiolysis of tetracycline hydrochloride in powder form, the dimethylammonium group blocks H· abstraction reaction at 77 K.

Notes: Abstract The concentrations of Na, Cl, Mn, Br, Fe, Zn, Rb, Sb, Sc, Cr, Al and Mg were determined in some types of bread and in some brands of milk powder consumed in the city of São Paulo (SP—Brasil), by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Radiochemical separations were carried out by means of retention of24Na on hydrated antimony pentoxide (HAP) from a 8N HCl solution, after digestion of the organic matter. It was possible in this way to determine the radioisotopes64Cu,69mZn and140La in the effluent solution. The detection limits of the trace elements analyzed in bread and milk powder samples were determined using the Currie and Girardi criterions.

Notes: Abstract The present paper describes radiochemical separation procedures developed for the determination of the elements As, Cr, Hg, Sb and Se in biological reference materials. The methods chosen utilize ion exchange, retention on inorganic exchangers and solvent extraction techniques for the isolation of the elements of interest. These procedures are more rapid than previously used methods, such as distillation and precipitation. As to the sample dissolution, the following procedures were tested using radioactive tracers and reference materials: treatment of the materials in teflon bombs with a mixture of HNO3+H2SO4 or HNO3 only in a normal oven, and with HNO3 in a microwave oven using specially designed digestion bombs.

Notes: Abstract Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was applied to determine the elements Br, Ca, Cl, Cu, Fe, I, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Rb, S, V, Zn in five varieties of Brazilian corn, resulting from the studies carried out in order to increase their protein contents. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by means of reference material analysis. In general, the precision of the method was lower than 15%, except for Cu, I and S. Sensitivity and detection limit were also determined. Besides, tryptophan contents were determined. It was observed that the tryptophan content in improved corn samples was twice as large as in the normal samples. However, the same ratio was not observed in the inorganic element contents.

Notes: Abstract Instrumental neutron activation analysis was applied to the determination of the elements Br, Ca, Cl, Cs, Fe, K, La, Mg, Mn, Na, Rb and Zn in medicinal extracts obtained fromCentella asiatica, Citrus aurantium L., Achyrolcline satureoides DC, Casearia sylvestris, Solano lycocarpum, Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Solidago microglossa andStryphnondedron barbatiman plants. The elements Hg and Se were determined using radiochemical separation by means of retention of Se in HMD inorganic exchanger and solvent extraction of Hg by bismuth diethyldithiocarbamate solution. Precision and accuracy of the results were evaluated by analyzing biological reference materials. The therapeutic action of some elements found in plant extracts analyzed is briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes an evaluation of activation analysis by delayed neutron counting to determine uranium and thorium simultaneously in geological materials and to measure235U/238U isotopic ratios. A procedure to isolate the thorium before the irradiation was studied and adapted for use when the interference of uranium makes the nondestructive thorium analysis impossible.235U/238U ratios were determined in standards with235U abundances from about 0.5 to 93%, in milligram size samples. Discussion on precision, accuracy and total error of the method is presented.

Notes: Abstract Instrumental neutron activation analysis has been applied to analyze epiphytic specimens of the lichenCanoparmelia texana. Samples collected from the barks of the trees were previously cleaned, lyophilized and ground to be irradiated under a thermal neutron flux in the IEA-R1 nuclear reactor. Elements Al, As, Br, Ca, Cd, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Fe, Hf, K, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, Lu, Mg, Mn, Na, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Th, Ti, U, V and Zn were determined quantitatively by using short and long irradiations. Comparisons were made between the results for washed and unwashed samples as well as those collected in two different years, from individual palm trees and also from different sites of São Paulo State. The precision and the accuracy of the method were evaluated by analyzing NIST 1572a Citrus Leaves, IAEA 336 Lichen and USGS W-1 Rock reference materials.
