Description: Broad spectral band data derived from the Nimbus-7 Earth Radiation Budget experiment are analyzed for the top-of-the-atmosphere noon vs. midnight variations in the exitant longwave flux density, spectral variations in the regional albedos, and differences in land and ocean net radiation budgets. The data were studied for a year (June 1979 to May 1980) on a global scale and for five selected study areas. The annual global total, near-UV visible, and near-IR albedo values, obtained were 30.2, 34.6, and 25.9, respectively, with marked differences in behavior between oceanic and continental regions. Over the continents, clouds and snow sharply decreased the near-IR albedo. The over-the-continent noon-emitted flux density averages were 15-25 W/sq m larger than the midnight values, with large regional and seasonal variations. Over the oceans, the average noon and midnight outgoing longwave-flux densities were nearly identical, with regional aqnd seasonal differences of several watts per square meter.

Description: The design variable program of NASA is a systematic approach to evaluate the performance of 12Ah aerospace nickel-cadmium cells of 9 important cell designs. These cells were life cycled in a Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) regime for 3 to 4 years. Representative cells taken from the design variable groups after different cycling periods have been examined. The results show that: (1) positive swelling and carbonate content in the electrolyte increases as a function of the number of cycles, (2) electrolyte distribution follows the order NEG greater than POS greater than SEP, 3) control and no PQ groups outperformed the rest of the groups and (4) the polypropylene group shows very heavy cadmium migration and poor performance.

Description: Sealed Nickel-Cadmium aerospace cells play a very important role in the mission of the satellite. There has been a constant effort to improve the cycle life, energy density, and reliability of these cells by many manufacturers and users. The Design Variable Cell Program is one systematic approach started by NASA in collaboration with General Electric (GE) towards that goal. Nine important designs were selected for evaluation. Fifty-two nickel-cadmium cells each of 12 Ah nominal capacity manufactured by GE were sent to the Navel weapons Support Center for evaluation of different design variables with which these cells were built.

Description: The ERB MATRIX tape is generated by an IBM 3081 computer program and is a 9 track, 1600 BPI tape. The gross format of the tape given on Page 1, shows an initial standard header file followed by data files. The standard header file contains two standard header records. A trailing documentation file (TDF) is the last file on the tape. Pages 9 through 17 describe, in detail, the standard header file and the TDF. The data files contain data for 37 different ERB parameters. Each file has data based on either a daily, 6 day cyclic, or monthly time interval. There are three types of physical records in the data files; namely, the world grid physical record, the documentation mercator/polar map projection physical record, and the monthly calibration physical record. The manner in which the data for the 37 ERB parameters are stored in the physical records comprising the data files, is given in the gross format section.

Description: Problems in the solar data generated by the Nimbus 7 satellite are discussed specifically for scientific users. Major and minor data flaws in the Solar and Earth Flux Data Tape (SEFDT) were identified, defined and categorized. Solar channel assembly misalignment, data gaps, and algorithm errors were among the problems described in detail. Solar flux density data derived from SEFDT are presented in graphical form.

Description: Sealed nickel cadmium cells having large number of cycles on them are discharged using Hg/HgO reference electrode. The negative electrode exhibits the second plateau. A SEM of negative plates of such cells show a number of large crystals of cadmium hydroxide. The large crystals on the negative plates disappear after continuous overcharging in flooded cells.

Description: The Naval Weapons Support Center at Crane, Indiana has conducted a large scale accelerated test of 6.0 Ah Ni-Cd cells. Data from the Crane test have been used to develop an equation for the description of Ni-Cd cell behavior in geosynchronous orbit. This equation relates the anticipated time to failure for a cell in synchronous orbit to temperature and overcharge rate sustained by the cell during the light period. A test design is suggested which uses this equation for setting test parameters for future accelerated testing.
