Notes: The photoionization cross sections for the hydrogen atom were measured in the wavelength range from 700−920 Angstroms. It was found that the experimental results agree with the theoretical predictions.(AIP)

Notes: Abstract A variational method is developed based on the Hartree-Fock approximation, but not restricted to a single Slater determinant trial space. The idea is to find a subspace of collective states which are strongly coupled to the ground state by providing a systematic technique to generate these basis states from a Hartree-Fock-like state. In the resulting basis space a residual diagonalization is easily performed. An application to a solvable model is made, both to justify and to investigate the structure of our approach.

Notes: Abstract We present a model for cold dark matter based upon continuum bound states of thee + e − system. These continuum bound states, referred to as photonium states to distinguish them from the well-known bound states of positronium, are shown to have cross sections and lifetime properties consistent with abundant production in the early universe and survival to the present time. Thus photonium can easily account for more than 90% of the total mass of the universe.

Notes: Abstract Properties of existing and planned cooled beams of intermediate energy ions are shown to be in the physical regime where a liquid or possibly a crystal may be formed. Thus these beams could provide a laboratory system for fundamental tests of many-body theory. An experimental test of the beam structure, involving scattering of laser light, is discussed. The experimental configuration used would provide continuously tunable coherent light over a wide frequency range when crystallization occurs.

Notes: Abstract We present a simplified model for the production of photonium in which an incident positron picks up an off-shell electron. The vertex form factor and coupling constant for one state are fixed by experimental measurements. Predictions for the production of additional states and for two-photon decay experiments are then made assuming the production vertex is the same for all states of photonium.

Notes: Abstract We have searched for cold fusion produced in an electrolytic cell with Pd cathode and Pt anode. The electrolyte was 0.1 molar LiOD in 99.8% D2O. A 2-mm rod of polycrystalline Pd and a 4-mm rod of single crystal Pd were used. No radiation was detected above background by a BF3 neutron and Ge γ-X detector. The D2 loading of the Pd was 0.8 D per Pd atom reaching saturation after 4 hours. We also attempted to duplicate the work of Scaramuzzi and co-workers on the Ti-D2 system. Both powder and pieces of Ti were used. The material was cycled several times between 1100 K and 77 K. No neutron, γ- or x-ray emission above background was observed. The results of a barrier penetration calculation for H-like atoms are presented. The high fusion rates reported for PdD x . are much larger than those expected from theoretical calculations on these systems.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we study the role of zero point energies in light front quantized field theories using a simple scalar field model with quartic coupling. In the equal time formalism, the zero point energies are renormalized by normal ordering with respect to some vacuum state, which is varied to determine the true, interacting vacuum. On the light front, we shall see that this procedure acquires an unexpected subtlety due to the equivalence of the ultraviolet (k +→∞) and infrared (k +→0) limits of the light front momentum. In order for the divergent zero point contributions toP + andP − to cancel, we find that the product of the infrared and ultraviolet cutoffs must be a finite constant whose value is determined by the coupling constants of the theory. As an application, we determine the vacuum structure of the theory in two dimensions as a function of the quartic coupling. Finally, we discuss the implications of our result for the discretized versions of light front quantization.

Notes: Abstract We elucidate a mechanism for the production of photonium, a set of resonances of the e+e− system. Due to their small, possibly vanishing, elastic width, the free space formation of these states is inhibited and external fields may substantially enhance their production. We develop a model for enhanced production based upon a three body mechanism involving a positron and a correlated pair of atomic electrons. Very strong sensitivity to the electron pair correlation is obtained. Decreasing this correlation by a factor of two over a range appropriate to inner shell orbitals of highZ atoms increases the photonium production cross section by eight orders of magnitude. For fixed correlation length, a sharp peak is found in the production cross section as the incoming positron energy is varied through a region near threshold for photonium production via this three body mechanism.

Notes: Abstract We have shown in a previous paper that stable electron-positron resonances (“photonium”) can account for the dark matter in the universe. In this paper we show that photonium in the galaxy will be dissociated by cosmic rays. We predict the intensity of the resulting 511 keV gamma rays as a test of the model. We find that the predictions exceed observations from the galactic center for model where the photonium has a similar distribution to the baryons. The predicted intensity is consistent with observations if the photonium is distributed in a large halo.
