Notes: Summary We have described the observation that Streptomyces griseus colonies grow group-wise on agar media containing streptomycin. We have found that this phenomenon is due to a substance (s) produced by germinating Str. griseus spores in media containing streptomycin, and this substance made the neighbouring spores more tolerant to increasing streptomycin concentrations. The substance is produced specifically by Str. griseus strains. The substance has probably a great molecular size, is thermolabile, not a nucleic acid and the applied enzymes did not inactivate it. Some investigated enzyme-poisons did not influence either its production or its effect on Str. griseus spores. We succeeded in carrying over the substance into liquid phase and separate it from the producing culture and this enables us to furterh purification and investigation of the substance.

Notes: Summary Sreptomyces griseus strains which produce streptomycin and which do not were compared by their cultural-physiological behaviour, their capacity of utilizing citrate, micromorphology and phage sensitivity. No correlation is found between any of the examined characteristics and capacity to produce streptomycin. There is one common characteristic among all three strains which do not produce streptomycin i. e., they have a short life cycle in submerged culture.

Notes: Summary E. coli 15 T - cells were cultured in the presence of cysteine, then removed and subjected to X-ray irradiation in cysteine-free buffer. The radiation-sensitivity was then found to decrease in inverse ratio to the concentration of cysteine used. This phenomenon occurred only with log-phase cells, while the radiosensitivity of stat-phase bacteria remained unchanged. The biochemical background of this phenomenon was also studied by means of 35S-Cysteine. The extent and distribution of cysteine incorporation into the fractions of log-phase cells were found to differ from those occurring in the fractions of statphase cells. The biochemical radioprotective effect of cysteine described above suggests two different explanations: a) the radioresistance induced by cysteine presupposes an active metabolic state of the cells, which may correlate with the induction of the repair systems; b) the cysteine incorporated by the cells provides a radio-protective effect; hence only the radiosensitivity of log-phase cells decreases, while that of the stationary phase cells remains unchanged owing to their inability to incorporate cysteine in an amount rendering them effective radioprotectors.

Notes: Summary 1. The radioprotective activity of several hundreds of fermentation liquids have been examined by methods described in our previous reports. 2. Out of the tested fermentation liquids, good protective ability was rendered—mainly after acid hydrolysis—by the fermentation liquid of Penicillium notatum strain which is applied also in industry. 3. The agent, when it was produced, proved to be d-Penicillamine. 4. The radioprotective activity of d-Penicillamine as well as its ability to reduce the toxicity of nitrogen mustard have been compared with the effect of other wellknown radioprotectors, on an equimolar basis. 5. It was found that its protective ability for E. coli B against both X-ray and nitrogen mustard is about the same degree as that of cysteine. 6. From the results, theoretical and practical conclusions have been drawn.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1. 5. Unter 40 unbekannten Streptomyces-Fermentsäften fanden wir zwei wirksame.

Notes: [Auszug] Recently, on examining the infra-red and ultraviolet spectra of primycin3, an antituberculotic antibiotic of Sakaguchi-positive nature, the presence of the azomethine group was shown by the ultra-violet maxima at 205-210 mμ, of the basic chromogenes. We pointed out also the effect of the applied ...

Notes: [Auszug] The growth of Staph. aureus D. in a medium containing 5 ml. casein hydrolysate is inhibited by 0-01-0-03 ml. of the samples taken from surface cultures six to eight days old, diluted 1 to 10. Submerged cultures give an average yield somewhat below this level. On acidifying the filtrate of ...

Notes: [Auszug] RECENTLY, we reported1 on primycin (C19H37O7N)w, an antibiotic of strong anti-tuberculotic effect (0-02 pigm./ml.) which has been determined, similarly to other guanidine antibiotics, with JV-bromosuccinimide, by the modified Sakaguchi colour reaction. Although in the field of nitrogen-bearing ...

Notes: [Auszug] Although it is possible to classify antibiotics orientally into groups with the aid of paper chromatography3,4, the characterization of differences due to their finer chemical structure is, in the case of guanidino antibiotics, a more difficult task. The investigations made by us were : (1) punched ...

Notes: [Auszug] After cultivation in media proposed by Waksman4 they behaved as different species. Comparing our strains on various sources of carbon, they proved to have different characteristics. They all grew on 1 per cent maltose, dextrose, pectin, amylum soluble, glycogen, d-ribose, xylose, d-fructose, ...
