Description: In recent years, the availability of large annotated corpora, together with a new interest in the empirical foundation and validation of linguistic theory and description, has sparked a surge of novel work using corpus methods to study the grammar of natural languages. This volume presents recent developments and advances, firstly, in corpus-oriented grammar research with a special focus on Germanic, Slavic, and Romance languages and, secondly, in corpus linguistic methodology as well as the application of corpus methods to grammar-related fields. The volume results from the sixth international conference Grammar and Corpora (GaC 2016), which took place at the Institute for the German Language (IDS) in Mannheim, Germany, in November 2016.

Notes: Abstract Syngeneic, semiallogeneic, or allogeneic spleen lymphocytes were transferred intonu/nu BALB/c mice, which were infected with vaccinia virus. Specific Sensitization of transferred thymus-derived cells was determined in vivo by mean survival time and virus titer in the spleen six days after infection, and in vitro by cell-mediated cytolysis of vaccinia virus-infected syngeneic target cells. Virus-specific Sensitization took place only after transfer of syngeneic or semiallogeneic spleen lymphocytes; allogeneic lymphocytes had no influence on mean survival time or virus titer and showed no virus-specific cytolytic activity in vitro. Infection of mice with vaccinia virus-strain WR, Elstree, DIs, or DIs-infected syngeneic fibroblasts resulted in the generation of virus-specific effector cells, while injection of a high amount of inactivated virus particles caused no Sensitization. These results suggest H-2 homology for production of virus-specific effector cells. Propagation of virus is not necessary, since early surface antigens, combined with syngeneic H-2 antigens, suffice for Sensitization of cytolytic T lymphocytes.

Notes: Abstract The Mainz neutrino-mass experiment investigates the endpoint region of the tritium β-decay spectrum with a MAC-E spectrometer to determine the mass of the electron antineutrino. By the recent upgrade, the former problem of dewetting T2 films has been solved, and the signal-to-background ratio was improved by a factor of 10. The latest measurement leads to $$m_\nu ^2 = - 3.7 \pm 5.3(stat.) \pm 2.1(syst.){{eV^2 } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{eV^2 } {c^4 }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {c^4 }}$$ , from which an upper limit of $$m_\nu 〈 2.8{{eV^2 } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{eV^2 } {c^2 }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {c^2 }}(95\% C.L.)$$ is derived. Some indication for the anomaly, reported by the Troitsk group, was found, but its postulated half-year period is contradicted by our data. To push the sensitivity on the neutrino mass below 1 eV/c 2, a new larger MAC-E spectrometer is proposed. Besides its integrating mode, it could run in a new nonintegration operation MAC-E-TOF mode.

Notes: Rare earth fluorides are a class of materials with a high potential for optical applications. Fluoride lattices allow high coordination numbers for the hosted rare earth ions, but the high ionicity of the rare earth to fluorine bond leads to a wide band gap and very low vibrational energies. These two essential factors, in particular, contribute to their practicality for use in optical applications based on vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and near infrared (NIR) excitation. The preparation and optical characteristics of rare earth fluoride nanoparticles and their embedding in polymeric, glassy or porous matrices are very promising for the eventual manufacture of transparent hybrid materials. Recent attempts to control the size of these particles down to the nano-scale and, at the same time, maintaining the performance of their macroscopic counterparts, indicate accessibility of hitherto unrealized optical properties and applications

Notes: We study the thermodynamics and kinetics of folding for a small peptide. Our data rely on Monte Carlo simulations where the interactions among all atoms are taken into account. Monte Carlo kinetics is used to study folding of the peptide at suitable temperatures. The results of these canonical simulations are compared with that of a generalized-ensemble simulation. Our work demonstrates that concepts of folding which were developed in the past for minimalist models hold also for this peptide when simulated with an all-atom force field. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
