Description: Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 recovered a number of large solid gas hydrate from Sites 994, 996, and 997 on the Blake Ridge. Sites 994 and 997 samples, either nodular or thick massive pieces, were subjected to laboratory analysis and measurements to determine the structure, molecular and isotopic composition, thermal conductivity, and equilibrium dissociation conditions. X-ray computed tomography (CT) imagery, X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Raman spectroscopy have revealed that the gas hydrates recovered from the Blake Ridge are nearly 100% methane gas hydrate of Structure I, cubic with a lattice constant of a = 11.95 ± 0.05 angström, and a molar ratio of water to gas (hydration number) of 6.2. The d18O of water is 2.67 per mil to 3.51 per mil SMOW, which is 3.5-4.0 heavier than the ambient interstitial waters. The d13C and dD of methane are -66 per mil to -70 per mil and -201 per mil to -206 per mil, respectively, suggesting that the methane was generated through bacterial CO2 reduction. Thermal conductivity values of the Blake Ridge hydrates range from 0.3 to 0.5 W/(m K). Equilibrium dissociation experiments indicate that the three-phase equilibrium for the specimen is 3.27 MPa at 274.7 K. This is almost identical to that of synthetic pure methane hydrate in freshwater.

Notes: This paper proposes a facilities management strategy for the dissemination of information technology at the kominkan (community center), the main public facility for community adult education in Japan. This study was undertaken in August 2000 with the initial distribution of questionnaires. Of the 513 facilities that participated in this study, viable returned responses stood at 298, representing a rate of 58 per cent. According to findings in our study, the three main room-types in the kominkan in which satellite communication hardware and personal computers were installed are: the audio-visual learning room, the recreation room, and the cultural activity room. In order to effectively disseminate information technology at the kominkan, the research team proposes a management strategy based on three criteria. These concern the concepts of "openness", "operation and management", and "equipment and furniture."

Notes: Abstract  Amelogenins are the most abundant constituent in the enamel matrix of developing teeth. Recent investigations of rodent incisors and molar tooth germs revealed that amelogenins are expressed not only in secretory ameloblasts but also in maturation ameloblasts, although in relatively low levels. In this study, we investigated expression of amelogenin in the maturation stage of porcine tooth germs by in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry. Amelogenin mRNA was intensely expressed in ameloblasts from the differentiation to the transition stages, but was not detected in maturation stage ameloblasts. C-terminal specific anti-amelogenin antiserum, which only reacts with nascent amelogenin molecules, stained ameloblasts from the differentiation to the transition stages. This antiserum also stained the surface layer of immature enamel at the same stages. At the maturation stage, no immunoreactivity was found within the ameloblasts or the immature enamel. These results indicate that, in porcine tooth germs, maturation ameloblasts do not express amelogenins, suggesting that newly secreted enamel matrix proteins from the maturation ameloblast are not essential to enamel maturation occurring at the maturation stage.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of a monolayer growth is studied using the two-dimensional lattice gas model by means of the path-probability method (PPM) for nonequilibrium phenomena. Kinetic equations for the combined processes of relaxation (adsorption and desorption) and diffusion are derived analytically and solved for the first time in the square approximation of the PPM. Comparison of the square approximation with the point and pair approximations along with Monte Carlo simulation shows the effect of using a larger basic cluster than in the previous studies. When the square approximation is used, the growth rate results are much improved in both cases with and without diffusion and agree well with the Monte Carlo simulations results, except for very small values of the driving forceL=δμ/k b T whereδμ is the chemical potential difference between the vapor and the solid phase. In the range where the agreement is good, there exists a region where the growth rateR is proportional to exp(−c/L with a constantc. This is the feature which is characteristic of two-dimensional nucleation-limited growth.

Notes: Abstract The microscopic master equation of a system is derived within the framework of the path probability method (PPM). Then, by extending Morita's method in equilibrium statistical mechanics, the path probability function constructed microscopically can be systematically decomposed to result in the conventional path probability function of cluster approximation when correlations larger than the chosen basic cluster are neglected. In order to critically compare the master equation method with the PPM, the triangle approximation is treated by both methods for crystal growth models. It is found that the PPM gives physically satisfactory kinetic equations, while the master equation (supplemented with a cluster probability in the superposition approximation) does not. The triangle PPM calculation considerably improves the result of the pair approximation for crystal growth velocity in the solid-on-solid model, and compares well with Monte Carlo results.

Notes: Summary Cell types containing S-100b protein-like immunoreactivity in the islets of Langerhans of the guinea pig were studied by light- and electron-microscopic immunocytochemistry using antisera to S-100b protein, insulin, glicentin, somatostatin, and pancreatic polypeptide. Two types of S-100b-immunoreactive cells were identified. The first type was stellate and characterized by thin cytoplasmic processes sheathing endocrine-type cells, especially pancreatic A-cells. It was located predominantly in the neuro-insular complex and in large islets, both of which were located near the main pancreatic duct. Intense immunoreactivity was found in the cytoplasmic matrix as well as in the nucleoplasm. Nerve fibers or endings were occasionally ensheathed by its cytoplasmic processes. The second type, whose immunoreactivity was rather weak and varied from one cell to another, was oval to polygonal in shape and located randomly throughout the islets. It was an endocrine cell-type and its immunoreactivity was located in the secretory granule. With the use of immunostained consecutive sections for demonstrating pancreatic endocrine cell-types, it was found that a portion of the pancreatic B-cell population expressed S-100b-like immunoreactivity.

Notes: A miniaturized electrochemical flow cell was fabricated on a silicon substrate using micromachining techniques, including photolithography, vacuum deposition, anisotropic etching, and fusion bonding. The flow cell consisted of a glass plate with gold elearodes, a silicon chip with a V-shaped groove, and immobilized glucose oxidase. Hydrogen peroxide and glucose were measured by direct-batch injection and by using the device in flow-injection analysis (FIA) system.
