Notes: Summary 1. The karyotype of T. zhukovskyi, a hexaploid wheat recently recorded from Western Georgia of the U.S.S.R., revealed that it has 3 pairs of satellited chromosomes. Two of these resemble closely the two pairs present in T. timopheevi. The other pair is similar in arm ratio to the pair found in T. monococcum var. hornemanni. Micro-satellites usually found in varieties of T. monococcum did not occur in T. zhukovskyi. 2. A maximum of 4 quadrivalents per cell was found at meiosis in T. zhukovskyi, the average being 1.35 per cell. Pollen and seed fertility were normal. 3. In crosses between T. zhukovskyi and T. spelta, T. macha and T. vavilovi, only the F1 plants of the cross with spelta survived. There was an average frequency of 15.1 univalents per cell in the zhukovskyispelta hybrid. Thus, the partial failure of chromosome pairing in this hybrid is similar to that usually found in hybrids between T. timopheevi and other tetraploid species. 4. From a discussion of the data, it is suggested that T. zhukovskyi might have arisen through chromosome doubling in the hybrid T. timopheevi × T. monococcum var. hornemanni. If this conclusion is supported by future experiments, T. zhukovskyi will be the first hexaploid wheat to have a genomic constitution other than ABD.

Notes: Summary 1. Secondary root meristems of Vicia faba were treated with (a) 0.2% aqueous solution of ethyl-methane-sulfonate, for two hours, (b) aqueous solution of hydroxylamine (1 mg/ml) for 2 hours and (c) a mixture of these two agents in the proportion of 1∶1, for 1 hour; and allowed to revive. Root tips were fixed at various revival periods, from 12 hrs. to 84 hrs. These two agents are known to attack guanine and cytosine of the DNA molecule respectively. 2. Metaphase and anaphase breaks were screened and the breakage points were determined for the genome of Vicia faba. These breakage points were found to be localized and these regions were found to coincide with some of the known heterochromatic regions, of M and Sb chromosomes. Both the agents induced breaks in chromosomes exclusively on these points. 3. Centromeric regions were found to be affected by treatment with EMS as well as HA, as revealed by centric breaks as well as inactivation of centromeric activity. 4. The mechanism of action of these agents and the possible reasons for these localized effects are discussed. 5. From the data presented as well as those available in the literature on localized chromosome breaks with chemical mutagens, the possibility of mapping regions of chromosomes rich in guanine-cytosine pairs of bases and regions rich in adenine-thymine pairs of bases, is pointed out.

Notes: [Auszug] Reciprocal crosses were attempted using C. annuum and C. pendulum as parents. The cross involving C. pendulum as female parent was successful and produced F! seeds. But the reciprocal cross involving C. annuum as female parent was not successful. When, however, C.annuum was used as female parent in ...

Notes: Summary 1. The length of the chromosome complements of T. monococcum, Ae. speltoides var. ligustica and Ae. squarrosa, the donors of the A, B and D genomes respectively of T. aestivum, varied in the ratio 1.0 ∶ 1.24 ∶ 0.76. The proportion of the total lengths of the chromosomes belonging to the A, B and D genomes in the bread wheat variety Chinese Spring, as calculated from the data of Sears (1954), also falls into a similar ratio (1.0 ∶ 1.28 ∶ 0.84). 2. T. monococcum, T. dicoccum and T. aestivum differed in the proportion 1.0 ∶ 1.5 ∶ 2.0 as regards chromosome length and not as 1.0 ∶ 2.24 ∶ 3. 0 as would be expected from the additive value of the total chromosome length of the concerned genome donors. 3. The DNA content of individual nuclei in the species studied varied in proportion to chromosome length, thus indicating that the DNA content per unit length of chromosome is constant in the material studied. 4. The type of karyotype asymmetry in the different Triticum and Aegilops species was classified according to the scheme of Stebbins (1958). The diploid species had the most symmetrical and the hexaploids, the most asymmetrical karyotype. No prominent heterochromatic segment could be detected in any of the species. 5. The data indicate that a considerable degree of elimination of chromosomal material has taken place in tetraploid and hexaploid wheats subsequent to their origin. It is suggested that this might have been an important factor in the conversion of tetraploid and hexaploid wheats into functional diploids. A combination of the multivalent gene suppressor system and chromosome elimination appears to have led to a synthesis of the advantageous features of auto- and allo-polyploidy in tetraploid and hexaploid wheats.

Notes: Summary Quantitative and qualitative differences were observed in the pigments of light-grown and dark-grown sprouts of the potato. Genetic implications of the qualitative differences are discussed and a set of genes governing the presence of leuco-anthocyanidin and its conversion to anthocyanidin are postulated.

Notes: Summary Simple phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlation coefficients were calculated from one year's data for nine characters in F1 seedlings of 72 crosses and 18 parents of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). Crosses were made in a line x tester model having 12 female lines and six male testers. The experiment was designed as a randomized block replicated three times at Kufri, Simla (India) during the 1979–80 crop season. Positive phenotypic and genotypic correlations of 1000-TPS weight were found with total tuber yield, number of leaves on the main shoot, number of shoots per plant and harvest index. The results suggest that 1000-TPS weight could be used when attempting to select for yield and other characters in F1 seedlings.
