Alicyclic Compounds, III. - New Method of Preparation and Reactions of [4]RadialeneThermal isomerization of 1,8-bis(trimethylsiloxy)-2,6-octadiyne (9d) provides dimethylenecyclobutene 8d, which is transformed into the dichloride 8f by treatment of diol 8b with thionyl chloride. Reduction of 8f with zinc in ethylene glycol dibutyl ether constitutes a new method of preparation for [4]radialene (1b; 77%). The mechanism of the thermal dimerization of 1b to the C16H16-hydrocarbon 14 is discussed. When subjected to gas-phase pyrolysis above 880°C 1b isomerizes mainly to styrene and o-xylene. Cycloaddition reactions with 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-dione and ethyl azodicarboxylate stop at the monoadduct stages 19c and d, respectively. With hydrogene chloride and bromide 1b affords the trihalides 25a and b, respectively, which, on pyrolysis, undergo ring opening to form the conjugated dienes 27a, b and 28a, b. Correspondingly, excess bromine converts 1b into the hexabromide 26, whose thermal ring opening leads to 29.
Notes:
