Conclusions 1. The observed behavior in the acetone-water system throughout the concentration range can be explained from a continuum model without involving microinhomogeneity. The model predicts continuous transition from the structure corresponding to a low acetone content to one for high ones via an optimal concentration, which corresponds to maximal stabilization at 16–20 mole % acetone. 2. Features representing maximal stabilization are: a) turning points on the concentration curves for self-diffusion, viscosity, dielectric relaxation, and nuclear magnetic relaxation; b) peaks in the kinetic-process activation energies in the same concentration range; and c) these peak positions are independent of temperature, which indicates that the stabilization is geometrical. These features occur together, which is a sufficient condition for maximal stabilization in aqueous clathrate-forming nonelectrolyte solutions.
